But their riffs are heavy and they hit hard. If you don't like the word agressive, let's say "heavy". Good?
Eh, not really. I mean, they're metal so yeah they're heavy at least. I just don't think their stuff hits as hard as you say. Both Pale Folklore and Ashes sound quite rockish to me, and especially Pale Folklore with the weakness of the mix. I know for a fact that the mixing on the album was a stylistic approach but it still weakens it a bit, not in quality just in punch. They're often considered a gateway black metal band for a very clear reason. And I don't consider that a bad thing at all like it seems you might think, I still like the band and look forward to any future albums.
It does hit hard. Then again, not Death Metal hard...
Pale Folklore's mix is perfect. And I'm not saying it's heavy and hard, cause we we're talking about Ashes Against The Grain. Pale Folklore sound more like Black/Folk Metal to me and it really shouldn't be heavier. The mix is just perfect.
They play atmospheric metal. And while the same riff can be played over and over, it helps building up the atmosphere. There's not a single note on Ashes Against The Grain that is placed randomly.
And I love a lot of their atmosphere. The Misshapen Steed, This White Mountain, fuck the entire White ep is brilliant. I just don't like Our Fortress is Burning and Fire Above, Ice Below as much as the other tracks. They're not bad by any stretch, just not as good as the rest of the stuff on the album.
Which part of Our Fortress Is Burning? I'd like to tell you that the three parts are awesome, but anyway... We are not here to try to come to an agreement :P
Agalloch is my favorite band. And I never get tired of their music. Everything by them, especially on Pale Folklore and Ashes Against The Grain is at the perfect place, at the perfect time.
I thought this too at one point which is why I brought all of this up. It's clear we disagree but I'm not exactly trying to come to an agreement on anything. I'm just trying to provide a different perspective on Agalloch as a band because they're what's being talked about right now.
Good :)

Let's ditch all the petty bickering over who knows what, and let's instead change the subject to the fact that MIKE FUCKING PORTNOY JUST LEFT DREAM THEATER
My bro told me about that. I can't believe it. I don't think they can get a drummer to match his mastery of the kit. I wonder what's in the store for them in the near future. Speaking of Dream Theater, I've listened to Train of Thought and I like it. My bro recommended it to me because he said it's one of their more guitar heavy albums. John Petrucci is shredding it up as usual.
Come on guys !!! There is other good drummers in the world. He was not, still isn't, and won't ever be the "best drummer ever". While his drumming is unique, I still think they could find a good drummer to replace him. And let's talk about song-writting. I don't think Mike Portnoy was any good at it anymore. Just... listen up dude... he thinks playing with Avenged Sevenfold is cool !...

How about Danny Carey or Bobby Jarzombek or Charlie Zeleny? I think Charlie has played for Jordan's solo project before, too.
Bobby :)
