I suppose in a way its just like Classical music, I don't really enjoy listening to it on my PC but I can totally see myself being completely engrossed if I ever saw a performance live.
Are you familiar with Glenn Branca? He was really into the guitar orchestra thing, composing for ensembles of 100 electric guitars. He also did a lot of prepared guitar/tabletop guitar stuff and he was a huge influence on Sonic Youth.
