I had just heard of a band called Autopsy and I have to say Feeding the Abscess is a sick album, they need to make a new album..

I've heard "extreme metal" used as a blanket term for any genre of metal that isn't heavy/power/prog/etc. You know, black, death, thrash, doom, and so on; the more "extreme" genres of metal. When it's referring to a specific genre, that's dumb.

The term "extreme metal" was originally coined by Dethklok, I believe, and for me encompasses really heavy, super technical stuff along the lines of The Faceless, BTM, Obscura, even a song or two by All Shall Perish.

Granted, it is another obnoxious sub-genre to add to the list of sub-genres that plague proud metalheads, but there is a lot of music that is most easily and accurately classified as "extreme metal."

Even iTunes uses the term. xD

Psycroptic post-Chalk is fucking dope. With Chalk, however, they're kinda meh. I like how un-mastered they sound, especially on (Ob)Servant.

What's the public opinion on All Shall Perish? I can't decide for myself, even after finding that I can't stop listening to "Wage Slaves" and "There is no Business to be Done on a Dead Planet."

That doesn't make the slightest sense. Not only are you comparing Ensiferum to Alestorm on the level of folk metal but "folkie but not folk metal at all"? You know, I just realised that not once have you made sense around here. It doesn't help when you start saying Opeth's first two albums have black metal elements in them.

Ensiferum = melodic death metal but with folk bits.
Alestorm = power metal but with folk bits. (And a pirate theme lol)

I wasn't comparing them music wise, just comparing that saying either one of them is folk metal is misinformed.

It doesn't help when you start saying Opeth's first two albums have black metal elements in them.

1.) Black metal elements, not black metal.

hypersomniax, who died and made you a metal expert? Alice in Chains pre-metal? When they were formed in the late 80s? The fuck kind of drugs are you? Also, extreme metal wasn't coined by dethklok, but rather by metalheads in order to refer to the "extreme genres" like death, black, doom, thrash (certain kinds anyway), and not just general deathcore.

They're heavy metal mixed with grunge, actually. And what do you mean "pre-metal?" Metal had existed for quite a while by the time they formed.

I meant pre-metal more along the lines of they themselves weren't exactly metal. Grunge definitely, but they lack some of the defining qualities that in my opinion make a metal band: double bass (or a lot of focus on bass), screaming (or other overdone vocals), and ridiculous progressions.
At no point did I say they were bad. I grew up on Alice in Chains. They were really the first "metal" band that I listened to (since Slipknot doesn't count). Just in my opinion, they as a band are ALMOST metal. Grungy hard rock at it's best.

Nobody had to die for me to have some knowledge about my preferred music style. Additionally, I never claimed to be an "expert." I was just putting up my opinions, take em or in your case, break em.

And by "no comment" under Queensryche, I meant it literally. I had nothing to say, because I have no opinion about them, having only heard a couple of their songs.

Hey look, you missed the part where I said "in my opinion." Cool word, opinion. Has a lot to do with this other cool thing called personal preference.
In other words, for ME to consider something metal (not you or Senseoffender or any of the other distinguished metalheads here), these are a few things I look for.

you missed the part where genres, while having a decent amount of wiggle room, are to an extent objective and not entirely based on personal preference. do you not consider early judas priest metal because they don't use screams, double bass (or an emphasis on the bass, whatever the fuck you meant by that), or "ridiculous" progressions?

Response to Metal Hell 2010-06-29 15:58:57

Guys, uh, let's just refer to Wikipedia, shall we?
"Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes."
So uh, whoever started it was wrong.
In Wikipedia's opinion. >;)

I absolutely consider ALL Judas Priest NWOBHM, and they do meet a condition that I said: overdone vocals. Not bad my any means, but different from anything at the time.
Not to mention that when JP started, IF it even existed, double-bass was a fairly recent thing. And they did emphasize on the bass, by using it a lot more than previous bands did.

And there's a pretty fuzzy line these days between Hard Rock and Metal.

Fair enough, though I don't think Halford's vocals were very over-the-top.

Not to mention that when JP started, IF it even existed, double-bass was a fairly recent thing. And they did emphasize on the bass, by using it a lot more than previous bands did.

Double bass drums have been used by jazz drummers since the 1940s and 1950s, and they were used extensively by rock and metal drummers in the 1960s and 1970s, so no, double bass wasn't a recent thing by the time Judas rolled around. Judas didn't emphasize bass anymore than other bands did. In fact, many bands turned up the bass far more extensively.

And there's a pretty fuzzy line these days between Hard Rock and Metal.

That's just false.

Why do I have the feeling that you are not getting it...
Even though you are listing metal bands, you always tend towards the core-ish bands. The Faceless, BTM... these two bands, while they have enough metal elements, are still core. And lets just not mention All Shall Perish... these guys are definitely deathcore...

You should really get more into actual death metal, black metal and thrash metal before you start talking about "extreme metal".
