They are Melodic Death Metal. End.

Official page of the Viking metal band. Includes a biography, news, show dates and photos. I don't care if they are melodeath, They don't sound like most other melodeath bands out there. They will forever be viking as all hell.

Manowar - that is all.

Better even than Blackwater Park?

I'm sheltered I guess, I haven't actually listened to any Bathory since like... 10th grade.

And in response to hating on BTM, I'm a drummer, so I pay more attention to the drum licks than guitar mostly.

But I thought chugging was essential for extreme metal?

1.) That album has holocaust on it, it's amazing by default.
2.) Blackwater park is opeth's weakest album by far
3.) The only opeth that could, AT ALL, be considered black metal is MAYBE Orchid,

BULLSHIT! Ensiferum are one of the key folk metal bands and while there are strong melodeath elements, they still have strong folk metal elements for them to be called folk metal. I've noticed a lot of folk metal bands having other metal elements in their music such as Equilibrium with black metal elements and Týr with prog metal elements.

I'll be needing to pick up more Bathory albums due to the upcoming Heidenfest show and their Bathory tribute supergroup. It seems Twilight of the Gods and Blood Fire Death are highly recommended. Any others?

I've always seen Opeth as a Progressive Metal band with a few elements from other metal genres. But these few influences are not big enough to actually make them a specific genre. I heard people calling them death metal, others calling them black metal, while Bathory are black metal in the most obvious way.

Chugging is for core shit

Response to Metal Hell 2010-06-28 14:38:24

I like it when chugging is used moderately(eg. Killswitch Engage), but bands that do mostly chugging are boring.

Then call me an impurist, but I like chugging. For my tastes, BTM mixes enough melodic riffs in to keep me interested. Then again, I like deathcore, so whatev.

I have one album by Beneath The Massacre. It's decent. But there is way too much technical riffs and very little interresting riffs. Technicality if it's not bringing anything to the music is kind of useless.

Progressive death metal.

I suppose Orchid and parts of Morning Rise could be considered black metal, but besides that they're not black metal at all.

I have to disagree and say Progressive Extreme Metal, but I would say Opeth is a genre of music itself.

They are melodeath and viking metal has never been a genre. Neither are pirate metal or pagan metal.

I've heard this term extreme metal a lot before, especially for bands that are very heavy and have aggressive vocals but are not quite clearly death or black or whatever, and I gotta say, there's no way it's a legitimate genre. It's another false term like "dark metal" and such.

I slightly disagree. While I agree Blackwater Park isn't as good as most of their stuff, but I just find My Arms, Your Hearse to be their weakest. Still Life is easily their best album. And I would put Ghost Reveries a little higher on the list.

I've heard "extreme metal" used as a blanket term for any genre of metal that isn't heavy/power/prog/etc. You know, black, death, thrash, doom, and so on; the more "extreme" genres of metal. When it's referring to a specific genre, that's dumb.

My metal knowledge can tell you that extreme metal is Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal and I'm not sure if there are more subgenres classified as extreme metal, maybe gothic... so, when a band play extreme metal that means that they don't play exacly one of those extreme heavy metal subgenres beside the fact that you can find them in the band anyway but not really just one of the subgenres in extreme metal, and opeth is clearly a Progressive Metal band, but they also have Death Metal in their music, but also Black Metal and maybe Gothic too, that's why I call them Progressive Extreme Metal. But well this is my opinion.

You don't need to call Opeth Death/Black/Gothic/blarblar though because if you're a Prog band then all that stuff just goes with the Progressive bit.
It's why I get so annoyed with people who claim any band is "beyond classification" or "a genre of their own". They're probably just Progressive or Avant-Garde or whatever.

Personally I have Opeth down as Prog Death, because thats so obviously what they are. They're a Death Metal band with tediously long bits and acoustic sections.

Why are we arguing over a supposed term callled viking metal?

So talking about metal I suppose I'll tell you a little story my dad told me about where we work at. Now he's been in this factory called Federal Mogel for 20 years they make car pistons. I just started last week, he told me a story about a really bad accident that happened two years ago back in the foundry. Well it all started there was a guy who drove a forklife around with his head phones in head banging like the dummy he was (useing dangerious machinary while listening to music.)

Well anyways he was driving around the foundry being the usual ass of himself when he didn't notice he had hit a hanging bucket container of molten aluminum. The massive bucket poured all over his back and head the old man I work with seen it and said you could see his bones he was burnt so bad. They didn't think he was gonna live but somehow the guy lived and now he's fucked up for life. An interesting fact I learned about molten metals ls that aluminum can stick to your skin unlike iron or steel. So they had to peel it off his skin like a bannana while it was still hot.

And thats your story from Smeagol today.
