I'm sorry guys, you may have to throw me out of Metal Hell. I'm listening to Someday Came Suddenly by Attack Attack!
And I'm enjoying it.

Attack Attack is an empty shell... I doubt you will even remember this band in a month... They plain suck and you will probably realise that soon enough, or turn into a mindless core fan.

Also in DVD news, the big 4 show is going to DVD.
Now all I want is a bootleg of any of the recent Slayer shows where they played Reign In Blood in its entirerty and a bootleg of the Master Of Puppets anniversary shows...I think Metallica played it in full for a few of them :/
Duuuude, I saw Rust In Peace live and I have got to say there is not substitute, it was amazing!
But, I want to get this dvd because it is historic

They are a bit shit but I keep listening to Stick Stickly and The People's Elbow, strangley I find them listenable.
still a true metal fan though, honestly >_<
Just picked up Dethklok's Dethalbum II, haha. Shit's fucking sick!

Last.fm is a horrible resource for genre labels for artists as anyone can tag any artists as ANYTHING! Wikipedia is more reliable than Last.fm for genres. Personally, I don't think Mastodon have any -core influences in their music. Well, I'm not sure about Remission as I've yet to hear it but the rest is either very little to none.
I'd say Mastodon has much more prog influence than -core. And besides, what other band has an even remotely similar sound to them?
Besides maybe Tool a little.
What's the general consensus on Beneath the Massacre?

BTM really sucks indeed. I saw them live on July 8, 2007 and was bored to tears. At least a few people screamed "You suck!" after their set ended.

Converge sound like Remission era Mastodon.
Why haven't I heard of any black metal bands from Iceland? Im sure Kidd would know of some if he would post here more often. :/
Also if you could spend a whole year with your favorite band who would it be? Id have to say ether Immortal Or Amon Amarth. im undecided between the two.

Pssh. Besides the fact that most of their songs sound the same, I like them. They have some really sick licks. Particularly the opening to "Society's Disposable Son" and "Condemned."
I can imagine how their show would suck though, they master the shit out of their albums.

That's a silly yet awesome looking band. I agree with you, they (whatever their name was) should have released an album. Oh well, at least a few bands have sung about Star Wars.
We shall now name them Star Wars Metal :)
That's not any worse than any of these stupid shit genres like Viking Metal...
I hate it when they make silly genre names. Viking Metal is almost always a combination of Folk Metal and Melodic Death Metal (or just Melodic Metal).

They're not really genre names. They describe the lyrical themes of the band, which i find suitable if the band mainly focuses on one subject. Then the people who are interested in that subject can more conveniently find bands who write lyrics about that subject, since there exists a label for such bands.

Let's not start doing this with everything.... Porngrind is already a freakin pain in the ass... Let's not become trend whores two...
When a lyrical theme is so abusively used that it has his own genre name... it just prooves that it's a stupid trend.

If a band uses primarily one lyrical subject, i don't see the problem with referring to that in the genre name. Its not necessarily abusive use. Abusive use would be writing a song about the day John F Kennedy got murdered, over and over again. With Vikings, there are a lot of different things you can write about.
These labels aren't all that serious, anyway. Nile call themselves "Ithyphallic metal".
And porngrind is just a fucking joke.

That's not what I meant. The problem isn't that Vikings and stuff related to this are what makes up most of the lyrical themes of the band. The problem is that so many bands are doing so that it actually became a fucking sub-genre !!! I mean... next we will have Hell Metal, Magical Metal, Cowboy Metal, Sex Metal, Video Game Metal...

Right... and it's not even funny...

Not all -core is bad. It's easy to rock out hard to BTM, regardless of their talent...
Speaking of core and genre names, The Dillinger Escape Plan calls themselves Mathcore.
And what are the characteristics of Vegan Grindcore?

You know what, from this day on, I'll call viking metal [genre X] with viking themes. So Ensiferum would be folk metal with viking themes. It's as simple as that. Shame WIkipedia has to cite viking metal as a real metal subgenre.

At 6/27/10 09:04 AM, Bahamut wrote: So Ensiferum would be folk metal with viking themes
Ensiferum are NOT folk metal.

Then what are they? This is pretty damn folky, especially the guitar melodies in the beginning and the guitar solo. Also, the rhythms in the verses sound a ton like sped-up folk music. Like many folk metal bands, Ensiferum play in compound meters (mostly 12/8).
Ensiferum are not Folk Metal... They sound like all the other Melodic Death/Power Metal bands out there. Like... Norther, Children Of Bodom, Wintersun...
These bands are not folk only because they use a few folk melodies and talk about vikings. It's like saying Amon Amarth are folk... while they really are just a Melodeath band with vikings and mythology as their main lyrical themes.
Folk Metal to me is Ulver (Bergtatt), Primordial, Mägo de Oz, Kramola, Agalloch...
Bands that really use a lot of folk music structures in their music and really mix the folk instruments with the metal instruments to really blend the sounds together.
I think bands like Ensiferum do have a few folk elements in their music, while they still remain mainly Melodic Death/Power Metal sounding.
Everything about Amon Amarth is viking. The way they look, how their music sounds, the lyrics. They are completely viking. I think that viking metal should apply to Amon Amarth and only Amon Amarth.

They are Melodic Death Metal. End.
