The 80s were the best of times for metal so it only makes sense to introduce people to those 80s bands.

I guess I'm not much of a legit NWOBHM fan just yet. Going by this list, I know Angel Witch, Demon, Diamond Head, Girlschool (just barely, though), Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Satan (just barely) and Saxon.

Hey, guys, I'm back. Sorry I haven't been here in a while. Been busy with life.

At 4/23/10 11:22 PM, Dalnaki wrote: Any NWOBHM fans here with a legit interest in the genre, instead of just the usual "Oh yeah, Iron Maiden and Angel Witch are cool."? NWOBHM isn't my strong point, but I know enough to get by. Anyway, here's a band for you guys. Swedish, too. I know that piqued your interest.

Here are some more basic NWOBHM bands you should check out:
Raven
Pagan Altar
Tank
Demon
Witchfynde
Blitzkrieg
Bitches Sin
Fist
Grim Reaper

Just check these guys out. They're pretty good.

Yeah, Raven was awesome for their first three albums. After that, they kinda went downhill. If you want Raven at their best, listen to Rock Until You Drop, Wiped Out, and All For One.

A lot of great bands came out of the 90's and the 2000 years... It would be kind of silly to leave these bands out of the list.

Haha, neither am I. What I picked up was mostly stuff from NWOBHM comps and my friends.
My NWOBHM folder is rather lacking, and only has about 20 bands in it.

I know all these bands except for Demon. I'll check them out later, thanks brah.

To everyone else: Yes, RAVEN is the best. Probably my favorite NWOBHM band, Grim Reaper being a close second. Also, you guys who like thrashy NWOBHM might like Avenger (UK). Avenger also has a flashy vocalist in the vein of Bruce Dickinson, if you guys are into that. Personally, I prefer him over Dickinson but that's just me.

A great starting metal band is The Lord Weird Slough Feg. I got a couple of people to start listening to them. Also, when you try to get people into death metal, try some more melodeath stuff, like In Flames, Children of Bodom, and Kataklysm.

Talking about Death Metal. I know they are not straight down Death Metal, but Blotted Science does include a lot of Death Metal elements and they could be one of the bands you would like to use to introduce people to Death Metal. Still, I'm saying this cause that's what I did with my ex-girlfriend and another girl I've met. But these two girls are intelligent... which is not the case of all people who listen to Slipknot and Korn... and who keep going around saying they are soooo much into metal music.

Problem with melodeath is that a lot of people get stuck at that level...
I have friends like this. I introduced them to metal with my favorite melodeath and gotheburg bands like Scar Symmetry, Nightrage, Wintersun, Kalmah, CoB, Arch Enemy and the such...
and then some core like All That Remains... but they just like... got stuck...
I've tried getting them interrested in some Folk like Ulver... Equilibrium... Some Death... with Blood Red Throne, Benighted, Decapitated, Origin... but it really just never worked... they got stuck on Melodeath and now they won't try anything else...

I don't know about the melodeath stuff, because it would probably give them the wrong impression. I'd say stuff like Leaukemia, Creepmime, AoM-era Morbid Angel, and other death metal bands with vocals that aren't deep unholy guttural blasphemies. Since most of the time it's the vocals that stop people from liking DM. Giving them extreme power metal bands like CoB and In Flames won't change that.

Talking about that...

I still don't get why... a lot of new bands go for the most unoriginal and stereotypical band names...
I mean, you want to make a black metal band... I really suggest that you do not name your band "Dark Forest". It's obvious that there is already one band (or a fucking thousand bands) named that way...

In fact, if you are going to name your metal band... Dark "something", you better fucking double check if there is not already a band named that way...

A few examples taken from Metal Archives...

Dark Age (6 bands)
Dark Ages (8 bands)
Dark Angel (2)
Dark Autumn (3)
Dark Dream (2)
Dark Earth (3)
Dark Eden (5)
Dark Embrace (5)
Dark Forest (5)
Dark Horizon (3)

This one as nothing to do with the list but... Dark White...
Non-sense is always epic :)

Anything with the word dark of darkness is already probably taken, so how can 5 guys, sitting around a table trying to find a name for their band could end up thinking that they would be the most original and awesome band if they would call themselves Eternal Darkness (8 bands)?

I mean, how could you guys? Please...

Anyway.. other shits like
Lightning
Moonlight...
and other fucking obvious shits...

Most important is that the image you will give to people is that you cannot even find an original name to your band. I know we should not judge artists so quick, but first thing I think when I see such a stereotypical name for a band... is that if they couldn't even find enough creativity to find an original name, how could they write original music? I always expect generic black metal music when someone tells me to listen to a band named Eternal Darkness of Dark Forest. I really think that picking a name like this is not the best way to make a good impression on listeners...

I don't listen to deathcore, I HAVE listened to deathcore. And the musicianship in a lot of bands (Such as All Shall Perish) is great, but the music itself doesn't connect with me. I usually love guitar and drum wankery.

I'm only defending myself because you didn't understand. I'm perfectly comfortable with my metalality. I don't swing that way :)

Because Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are lame copies of these awesome bands that we all like.

Thinking of band names isn't easy. My stoner metal band is currently called 'Troll'. It just kind of stuck. We could think of things way more original than that, but what's the point, it's fine how it is.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there was an old black metal band called that, when I searched it on the metal archives. But we like our name.

I always thought that when a band's name was already taken you could still make an album with that name. If Troll is really a name you guys like, then it could be the name of one of your tracks, demo or even a full lenght album title if you guys ever make it this far.

Or you could add another word that would match with the word Troll and stick it somewhere in your band's name :P

Or... yeah, you could leave it that way. I mean... there is only one Megadeth, there is only one Black Sabbath, there is only one Iron Maiden. I bet you would like your band to be the only band named that way...

Still... if you like it that way, than that's just fine with me. Especially if you guys don't plan on making a living out of this band.

The majority enjoy those bands and that's where metal was making huge developments in the genre. It makes perfect sense to put Megadeth and Maiden in the beginners metal list. Throwing them Agalloch or any lesser known metal bands isn't the way to go IMO.
