Not really. But usually when someone posts a few bands and that he doesn't qualify, you can always tell what kind of metal he could be interrested by...

Like this guy who asked if he could join recently...
We could suggest him some Megadeth, Kreator and some more Thrash and Heavy Metal since the guy mentionned that he liked Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Judas Priest (I'm talking about MaraquanWocky.

And for Zakkles... I really dunno what to say...

I guess your idea could work...
if we don't have any kind of idea what to suggest based on the guy's tastes...

Then we could suggest a few bands of many different genres...

Megadeth
Black Sabbath
Death
Agalloch
Blood Red Throne
Blotted Science
Motorhead
Symphony X
Sonata Arctica
Dream Theater

These bands are a few of my favorite bands and most easiest metal bands to get into (except for... Blood Red Throne... but I guess we could still suggest a few of the bands who play heavier stuff.

What do oyu guys think about that list?
Nev, any adds?

There's nothing elitist about having an ear for quality, and disregarding shitty bands/genres.
Disregarding genres is pretty much what being elitist is.

Maybe... but then again... I think there is art with deeper meaning, more work, more originality, unique stuff with diversified influences and good progression in the music. And there is Green Day :)

There is. Stay around long enough, and you'll discover them. This is one of those bands.

You're not elitist for not liking deathcore, it just means you have an ear for quality. Though the technical stuff I don't know what to say. Brings to mind bands like Necrophagist and Obscura that are technical for the sake of being technical. And shitty guitar tones. Yeah, fucking worst guitar tone I've ever heard.
Seriously, why would you play death metal with a clean tone? Fucking moron.

True, but you have to admit some of their songs and guitar leads with piano are epic.

Ever listen to Necrophagist? Their tone isn't the kind you'd expect in death metal. It's irritating, and doesn't use much distortion. It's clean, too. Now, I haven't listened to much Necrophagist nor do I want to.
But from what I heard, clean.

They're too progressive for you, they sing from the heart of prog, and the long songs are due to their complex radio rock and rhythmic chugging in multiple time signatures. It just sounds like normal chugging to us mere mortals, but I can assure you, it is something much more. Plus, who doesn't love it when they bust into a need, and pointless guitar solo, simply for the sake of having one? That's right, everyone.

I've had a few thoughts on this and I like it. However, I feel there's two lists to give out: One to show the most notable and best metal artists to get into for those who are very new to metal while the other is more specific on the subgenres of metal for those who are looking further into metal. If it were up to me what people should find out to start off with, these are what I'd recommend:

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Megadeth
Metallica
Motörhead

That covers the first list. As for the second one, this can be tricky considering I'm not experienced with every metal subgenre out there but I'll list what I feel would be good to show to newer listeners:

Anthrax
Blind Guardian
Candlemass
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Dream Theater
Ensiferum
In Flames
Helloween
Opeth
Slayer
Stratovarius

Now some bands there may not be liked by others (hell, I may not like Cannibal Corpse that much but it definitely tells newcomers what to expect from death metal) but this is to give new listeners a good idea on which subgenres of metal they'll enjoy. This list just needs avant-garde, black and industrial metal and it should be all good for a beginner's list. Well, the more subgenre specific one anyway.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-04-23 14:24:13

Both look good to me. I'd perhaps put Helloween on the first list though.

I started listening to Metallica with the album St. Anger, so shame on me. Also I remember listening to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne, and headbang a lot to it, and now it doens't give me any emotion... I remember listening to a cover's band that only played Heavy Metal and Power Metal and I was always headbanging to it, some months ago, I was going to see them again and I found it boring, I was almost going to scream, "play Dimmu Borgir, I want extreme shit!". I don't know if you guys also hate Dimmu Borgir as some people I found that hate them, and I didn't really understood why... I love their music. I don't understand why all the hate on Cradle of Filth too...

I think the second list is more appropriate for them. Helloween are far from being as popular as Megadeth or Judas Priest. Therefore, they're better in the second list. Come to think about it, I think Slayer would be alright on the first list.

I have one of Dimmu Borgir's albums and I don't find them to be as bad as some metalheads make it out to be. I don't really get the hate myself but I can understand Cradle of Filth's hatred based on Dani Filth's vocals and how he is as a person overall.

Yeah, for a long time I had a very bad impression about Metallica, I didn't like it at all... but then I listened to real Metallica, and I found them as my favourite band, anyway my favourite band now is Machine Head, I want to see these guys live...

I found Dani Filth's vocals interesting, because it's unique, there's no vocalist in any band singing like him. About how he is as a person I don't know, but I don't think I would really give a shit about it, if he continues making music that I appreciate... I really like listening to Cradle of Filth.

Why do people turn to the corporate puppets making a mockery of metal while simultaneously cashing in on it and capitalizing on it for music?

Deathcore doesn't do it for most metalheads because they lack creativity and uniqueness (if that's even a word). I like some deathcore bands, but most of the time, these bands are un-original bands with angry teenagers as vocalists...

They have good technique, but what is good technique when you compose only boring chugging riffs and write about punching people in the face and destroying things...

I think the ones who listened are more appropriate for Bahamut's list for people looking for further Metal bands. Bahamut's n00b list kept it nice and simple. I think Agalloch and stuff are more aquired tastes. Metallica, Maiden, etc are far more accessible.

Dude...

that was my list...

Megadeth
Black Sabbath
Death
Agalloch
Blood Red Throne
Blotted Science
Motorhead
Symphony X
Sonata Arctica
Dream Theater

I think we should still put some fucking awesome metal bands on the list. Still Agalloch and Blotted Science do not require soooo much knowledge in metal to appreciate.

Whenever I want to introduce someone to metal, I always use these two and never... have I failed getting someone interrested into metal by making em listen to Agalloch.

I think that introducing people only to the few 80's bands... is not that much of a good solution...

Stil... I know there is a lot of teenage noobs who are interrested in metal... and people I got interrested into Metal are not dumb teenage kids... so yeah :P

Any NWOBHM fans here with a legit interest in the genre, instead of just the usual "Oh yeah, Iron Maiden and Angel Witch are cool."? NWOBHM isn't my strong point, but I know enough to get by. Anyway, here's a band for you guys. Swedish, too. I know that piqued your interest.
