Why can't a band fit into more than one category? I didn't know there were strict guidelines to follow for black metal.

I consider Demon of the fall to be a Death/Black/Prog Metal mix. That and Blackwater Park.

It does get so so, but I havn't even listened to Agalloch for about 6 months. And honestly.......... Beethoven > Agalloch.

Why do you compare classical music to metal?
And I wouldn't say so anyway. Agalloch are like the musical gods of this era :)

Definitely, Agalloch aren't doom.

Yes they are

Btw, Ashes Against The Grain... The Mantle... both Doom Metal albums. No matter what you say :)
Blah they are not.

You fucking serious? You can listen to Limbs and Falling Snow and still be able to ignore the heavyness, the slowness and the melancholy in the doomish guitar riffs?
They may not be your typical doom metal band. But seriously, they are Doom Metal for sure.

Digable Planets make some kind of Jazz Hop stuff. But you gottat love the Brooklyn attitude y'all! Cause these n*ggers can get annoying. Still the music is kind of good.

Get some Funki Porcini otherwise. I really like what this guy is doing :)

Incredible is such a strong word to name a band like Amon Amarth.
Good? Yes. Outstanding? No.

But since they are Tolkien influenced... I couldn't imagine hating them.
No wait, wait... I listenned to that shit band named Ephel Duath. I was so dissapointed of seing a band use the name of the darkest fucking mountains of Mordor to name their band and play such an horrible pile of unrelated in anyway to Tolkien's universe crap.

Agreed. Black =/= Death. They have almost (or absolutely) no black metal influence.

Progressive black metal is sort of a paradox. Black metal generally frowns upon virtuosity and all that, favoring simple riffs repeated over and over. It's hard to get an atmosphere going with WHEEDLEY WHEEDLEY WHEEDLEY everywhere. Black metal strays to the avant-garde far more than the progressive, just like death metal usually leans towards technical and prog rather than avant-garde. I'm not ruling out the possibility of progressive black, but I feel like it would sound really fucking weird. Feel free to correct me if there's a prog black band out there, though.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-01-29 08:55:28

I think you can be Progressive in Black Metal if you're not a church burning, racist.

The comma misplacement makes it seem like you mean that black metal musicians are church burnings, and that you're calling me a racist.

I would of said Deathspell Omega but its only really coming from the Opeth school of Prog where all you need is an acoustic section. And to me that kind of ties in with the whole atmospherical thing Black Metal has going on.

And for some reason I'm starting to dislike Opeth. It's probably just spite because everyone likes them and at the moment I'm really not seeing anything good about them. I've been to too many of their live shows and had too many boring evenings because of the shitty sets they play.

My friend got me to listen to Neurosis' "A sun that never sets"
And I had mixed feelings towards it at first, then it grew on me.
Anyone here like Neurosis? Can you recommend me some songs/albums?

I think the closest thing to Progressive Black Metal that doesnt stray too far from being "tr00" would be Atmospheric Black Metal.

This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.

Well melodic death metal with lyrics revolving around Norse mythology :p

but yea I just call them viking metal, it's a wee bit easier to say :)

I must say that I'm positively surprised about the amount of useful discussion in here. Compared to what I read before I left in summer, this is pure bliss.

Nice job with keeping the thread clean, guys!

Also, have a look at my "custom" E-drumset; for all the drummers, these are my specs:

Steel rack
Alesis CP HiHat with stand
Two Traps single-zone cymbals
Roland CY-8 dual-zone ride w/ choke
Mesh-Head toms and snare
Yamaha DTXpress IV module
DW 7000 double-bass drum pedal

I love the shit out of it and I'm learning fast. Love the look of it, too ^^

That is beautiful! I'm fucking jealous, mine looks like crap (which I got fairly recently too... like 6 months ago recently). Mine is just an Alesis DM5 Pro. When I'm in the money I'll start beefing it up more, but for now I'm stuck with his ugly bugger :P:

Yes, they are really good. The only problem is that i find them depressing sometimes because of the unhappy memories associated with their music.
I even like their newer work as much as their old stuff.

I like them, because they're melodic and heavy, which is my favourite combination, and I don't know any band, that sound similar to them, even if that band is a Melodeath band, well, there are some Soilwork musics I can find a bit similar but I don't really like them.

I consider Buckethead to be simple Avant-Garde, as opposed to AV Metal. There's Metal stuff in his catalogue. It's debatable.
And iwrestledabearonce couldn't be any more Metalcore/Deathcore/Hardcore if they tried. Not Metal.

In Flames? They're actually a good band. One of their songs, "Take This Life", appears as a bonus track in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Some other bands I like are All That Remains, Magane (pronounced "mah-gah-neh", sort of Japanese Cradle of Filth-like), Deathgaze, Girugamesh, Byzantine, Tool, and especially Dethklok. Also, you should check out Nylithia, especially if you like Super Mario Bros. Just a fair warning, the music video contains some flashes which may cause epilectic seizures.

I love All That Remains too (Even if this bad isn't metal....Core Music). For me In flames was a good band (old CD) but now their music and new style doesn't attract me.
