No... cause first of... Extreme doesn't exist as any kind of genre or classification. I can't see how art can be extreme. Art is always about creating something new and pushing the limits even further. So no, not extreme. They may have power metal influences, but they still are Melodic Death Metal.

The only thing death about their music is the Vocals. And even those sometimes can be more clean than not. They are Power in my opinion, but a very different kind of it. I think Extreme Power is a good classification that they are one genre but also very different from the norm.

Chuck Schuldiner. He had the old school death metal vocals going on with his first albums but evolved into this crazy high pitched and sinister death growl in the last few albums.

Mike Smith.
He's hilarious, and he can kick anyone's ass.
Sorry for the double post, I meant Frank Mullen, not Mike Smith.
I always get those fucking names mixed up.

Nah! They have a lot of Melodic Death Metal stuff, mostly in the drums and guitar riffs. And take the keyboards, have you ever heard that kind of keys in power metal? I don't think so :P
But these kind of keys can be found in Melodeath. I don't know. It's really just not their vocals that makes them melodeath...
I mean... if you would ask me...
Which of these bands does CoB ressembles the most...
Nightrage and Wintersun
or
Stratovarius and Altaria
I'd go with Nightrage and Wintersun...
and they are both melodic death metal.

Mr. Hustler (Blood Red Throne)
Mikael Ã…kerfeldt (Bloodbath/Opeth)
Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy/Bloodbath)
Adam "Nergal" Darski (Behemoth)
This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.
Children of Bodom dont sound like Wintersun at all, really. Haha. Their keys are very heavily Power influenced, every piece sounds like some fantasy night scene. And the guitars are way too cheesy and gimmicky to be Death most of the time. If I were to say if they lean more one way, Definetly power. But Alexi's vocals are very not Power, so I guess that user's post was right. He's a death vocalist in a power band.
Also, Wintersun is Extreme Power as well.

Really? Wow, I never liked power metal, but I love Wintersun. I always thought they were melodic death metal, they barely sound close to power. But extreme power...?
Am I missing something...?
They are Neo-Classical Metal and Melodic Death Metal. Just please... listen to Hatebreeder and tell me they are power metal. Their lead guitars are very symphonic, yet not power at all. Their leads are neo-classical metal riffs. And if you follow the riffs, especially on HateCrew Deathroll and Hatebreeder, there really isn't that much power metal influences. Even though there are power metal influences, I cannot classify them as Power metal. I'm not the only one saying so. Metal Archives classify them as Melodic Death Metal/ Power Metal. I know they have power metal elements in their music. But they really do not fit only in that genre.

Oh fuck yes, Chuck ftw.
Deaths cover of Painkiller is rather epic
I decided to write a review for Helloween's Unarmed which is also available approved on Metal-Archives (thanks to them for not being nitpicky and rejecting it for the smallest reasons).

I guess there's some power elements in Wintersun but they don't sound alike to Stratovarius and such. I find them to be more melodeath than power but Wintersun has been known to be a band that's not easy to classify in a single genre. Maybe we'll get a better idea whenever the fuck Time comes out.

I'm assuming that's going to be the upcoming Wintersun album. I'll definitely look forward to that, I need to hear some more of Wintersun than I already do, just because they're that awesome.

Yeah. Hatebreeder is my favorite album from them. But I'll agree to this. I guess I just want to make it known they have power influence. Same with Wintersun. :P
Also, Bahamut, that sounds terrible. The album cover looks so pretty. What a waste :x

Of course Time is the upcoming Wintersun album. It's an album that's taking so long to come out that it's become the next Duke Nukem Forever (I refuse to mention that god awful album by a certain hard rock band). The sad thing is the last major information we heard was the unfinished album cover leaking roughly a year ago.
I agree with Duff about Bodom. Neo-Classical Metal is spot on. They're more similar to Yngwie's sort of music (that kind of Neo-Classical/Power Metal) than they are to your Helloweens and whatnot.
Also, Wintersun are shitty.
Like the shittiest thing in music. Bland as hell. I don't understand why the entire Metal world seems to have a huge hard on for them. Can people not see how awful they are?

I thought Chinese Democracy was a great album. People need to get over the fact that it's not a Guns N' Roses album and thats its an Axl Rose album. And anyone who has listened to 'My World' from Use Your Illusion II should know that Axl's vision was far different to your standard Hard Rock.
Plus, it has Buckethead and Ron Thal on it. And thats as close to a perfect guitar duo as you can get.

I agree to a degree. The only reason I like them is for the BEGINNING of Starchild and Beyond the Dark Sun. The rest of the album is shitty. I really like the vocalist too.

The chorus from "Left Behind" and "Duality" are the same thing with different lyrics. Seriously. Major loss of respect.
If you view life as a mission for truth and purity in vision, you can become as the anointed and fade away from the disjointed.

Humm first, I think that the ambience created by the band is to dark to be power metal.
the vocals and thelyrical themesused for their songs put that band in the death metal classification...My point :/
-Power metal is highly focused on the vocalist, with "clean" vocals
-Power metal's lyrical themes typically focus on fantasy and mythology

for the most part, except some Power Metal bands, for example, 3 Inches of Blood (both heavy and black influences too) have harsh screaming in it too.

again, for the most part, but some bands have political themes, or other "realistic" things. Not that lyrical themes mean anything to me. If the song is good, I like it.

I wouldn't really say they have black influences. They just use screams. But that's just me nitpicking, it doesn't really matter :P
