I really like metal but I have been listenning to this style of music for just about a year and I dont know lots of things, and something Id like to know more about is type of metal, like, what makes Black Metal to be Black Metal, why do we call power metal that way?

Yeah same here like i been listenin to metal for about a year or two and i can sumtimes classify death and black metal, and other genres, but sometimes, like for the haunted and in flames, i dont know what they would be.

Wikipedia would be a good place to look if you want to know more about heavy metal and its subgenres, like black and death metal.

In Flames, along with Soilwork, Arch Enemy, and Dark Tranquility all fall under the subgenre known as Gothenburg Metal, named after the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, which was where creators of the style, In Flames and Dark Tranquility first got started. The subgenre is more commonly titled Melodic Death Metal.
As for the Haunted... I still hve to hear more by them, so I have no fucking clue.

Response to Metal Hell 2005-08-17 10:33:36

Well, "The Haunted" are also Melodic Death Metal, with some thrashy elements and some hardcore. Some people call them 100% thrash, but that's just wrong. Don't really like them, Darkane is the epitome of modern thrash metal to me.

I just got to know the genres so well by listening to a shitload of metal. Read the FAQ or Guildelines on the Metal-Archives, that should help you a bit. And also, as Sir -Tharikifa- said, check out Wikipedia.

By the way, Ghoul, I've written on a song for a week now and it's really getting interesting IMO. It has some kind of Immortal feeling to it(Damned in Black, especially) and some nice double acoustic guitars.

I've started recording some new material, and it's a lot darker than In The Winter Lies The Warmth, while still retaining the ambience. I've only got an intro done and I'm working on the second song, but it's coming along well.

Yeah, melodic death metal is a better word... Dissection are from Gothenburg, but they are one of the blackest death metal bands if they are death metal. Storm of the Light's Bane is one of the most black and evil and great black metal CD's I've ever heard.

However, Melodic Death metal isn't a great categorization either, because they lack the death grunt. Melodic Death metal is more like God Dethroned and Dawn of Dreams and Throes of Dawn. I guess In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, and At The Gates are more just melodic metal.

Wow... it must have been months and months since I've not been in here.

Howz everyone?

I know must of you guys exclude Nu Metal to "real" metal... I was in this categories not a long time ago... but a friend of mine who's a Nu Metal addict made me realize that some times... there's some good stuff those guys comes out with.

I'm thinking about Unearth, Atreyu, Bleeding Trough... anyhow... I just felt saying hi.

I wish a great Metal concert to all of ya! Children of Bodom coming next month... it's gonna be a BLAST!

Most of them are Metalcore I think, not quite Nu Metal. Dont like metalcore either.

Newest cds I've bought:
Bloodaxe - Bloodthrone
Moontower - Black Metal Terror

Yeah... and it is occasionally labled Scandinavian Death Metal.
But after listening to hours and hours of In Flames... their sound, from Lunar Strain to Clayman anyway, seems to be a unique mix between Heavy Metal, Death Metal, and Melodic Metal. Add Nu-Metal to that mix and you get In Flames' newer sound.
In Flames was the very first Metal band I really got into... excluding Nu-Metal.
Arch Enemy, up untill a few months ago, I labled them Death Metal/Thrash Metal. But after looking Deeper... they seem to be exactly what they are labled... Melodic Death Metal... maybe with a tiny bit of Thrash in there, but Melodic Death nonetheless. And last but not least for my list... Dark Tranquillity... to tell you the truth, I have only heard ONE song by them, it was a music video... I am truly a fan of Nuclear Blast's Monsters Of Metal Compliation DVDS... although I dont have 3 and I have heard kof teh Monsters Of Death metal, or it si called somthing like that.

In Flames aren't speed metal...

You into Classic Metal/Speed Metal? Grave Digger is a very good one...
Primal Fear, Mystic Prophecy are both very good Speed Metal/Power Metal bands...

Wow, you should get into Dark Tranquillity more!! Unlike In Flames, who started off strong (i love lunar strain and the jester race) and have become quite weak these days, dark tranquillity just keep getting stronger. Have a listen to the album Damage Done and tell me that that album doesnt make you poop yourself with delight!

In flames fans might wanna try looking into Gardenian too. Complete In Flames rip offs.
