I've got the new Nile. It's classic Nile, but on speed, and with a really good production value.

If you don't have it, you should shoot yourself in the foot, because you're missing out on some top notch brutallity.

Response to Metal Hell 2005-07-23 07:28:50

The new Nile is alright, like all other Nile releases, but I don't quite get the hype sorrounding them.....

and you are discussing Disturbed? IMO they are horrible.

Response to Metal Hell 2005-07-23 08:08:20

You don't get the hype??

They have to be one of the top death metal bands in the world at the moment. And as far as I know, the only death metal band with all their music based around egyptian scales, and the lyrics based on egyptian mythology. Not only that, but they're brutal as hell, the guitarists are lightning fast and amazing, and the drummer totally pwns.

Not to mention the guitarist is practically an old geezer, at the ripe old age of 47. I guess that's not entirely relevant though.

I dunno...maybe Nile is just an accquired taste :).

Actually it isnt hard rock... its more of a 50/50 between Rap and Metal.
So, along with all the Alt. Metal bands, they technically fall under the metal genre... underneat teh so-called "Nu-Metal" Genre.

I used to like them... they were like a stepping stone into pure metal for me...
And the song Psycho... did you dl that? because they actual name of taht song... on the album anyway... is titled The Meaning Of Life. Its the last song on The Sickness album.

And that would be my favorite song by them...

Finally completed my Blind Guardian discography. Yeah, they're the best power metal band on the planet. Nightmare In Middle-Earth continues to amaze me and it was the first ever metal CD that I bought.
They shit all over Disturbed, that's for sure.

Once upon a time the term "power metal" was interchangeable with plain old heavy metal, with perhaps an emphasis on heavier riffing. In recent times, though, the term is most often used to describe the decidedly European style of metal, a style dominated by double-bass drumming, anthemic choruses, and speedy riffing. One originator of this style would have to be Helloween, whose early works such as Walls Of Jericho and Keeper Of The Seven Keys proved to be blueprints for the style. Another band worth mentioning is Hammerfall, as they are often regarded as the band most responsible for the revival of the genre in 1997 when they debuted with Glory To The Brave.

Listen to Evergrey, Edguy, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Dream Evil, Manowar, Iced Earth, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody and Metal Church for starters. That should give you a good idea of the styles of power metal.

Well, In Flames is definately not Speed Metal, but the other two have that style in their music.
Judas Priest is an example of "original" speed metal.

I heard the new 8 foot sativa a few days ago...I wouldn't call it death metal. It's probably the heaviest thing to come out of new zealand though. At least they're trying :).

As for Kalmah, Inflames and CoB being speed metal...yeah, they wouldn't be speed metal. They have certain speed metal elements, but essentially speed metal is just wanky thrash. Check out Cacophony.
