Just really fast power chords in trimphant rhythms.

Indeed. Power chords held for 2-4 bars for the chorus. Verses will be 8 or 16th notes changing every bar, maybe with a slight groove.

Lead parts are often slow and melodic, giving the whole epic feel. Solos can be shreddy but none more so than any other genre (except Doom).

this leads me to a question i've been wondering for a while; are solos in metal improvised like they are in every other genre, or do some bands write out their solos beforehand?

You say every other genre but solos in Rock aren't improvised and Pop and stuff.
Really, Jazz and Blues is where improv is pretty much guaranteed.

And I'd say its a mixture, sometimes it'll be improv. Mostly it'll be a series of improvs that are worked at and fine tuned. And stuff like Spastic Ink, Necrophagist, Behold... the Arctopus I'd say they were pretty well thought out.

The latter apparently write music above their level and then spend months learning to play it.

I'd say improv happens, but is rarely kept in its original improvised state.

There is a solo on A Change of Seasons that Petrucci improvised and wanted to change (of seasons) but they were like 'Nah its fine'.

i know, they're both built upon improv and all.

Hey, Piromano, I don't mean to bother you, but have you joined? If not, could you list 10 bands?

At 2/21/09 01:32 PM, Nev wrote: Gonin-Ish

So you finally gave them a good listen? I love the instrumental work in that band.

I haven't listened to much groove, but I've gotten a pretty bad impression of it thanks to Machine Head and post-Cowboys Pantera....especially Machine Head.

This is true. Everybody knows this is true.

The big problem with black metal is that they always search for the worst sound quality possible.
You really do not have to get the greatest recording quality to make a good album, but it would be a good start to make all the instruments audible (if thats the good word).

Yeah... I know, realised it after posting...

sorry, I was really talking about those who really try to get a bad recording.

I know :)

But bands like Xasthur would just be better if the recording quality was a little better. It's already a fucking great band, but they could equalize drums and stuff like that.

Sorry for generalisation. I really didn't meant to say this.

But maybe you could make me a list of those "very complexe" black metal bands you were talking about :)

Ulver's Black Metal Trilogie comes to mind, though Nattens Madrigal's recording quality isn't so great.

I don't know if anyone has had this problem, but I can't focus on anything because I keep hearing high-pitched screams in my head that won't stop, even when I bash my head over and over again.

Not the first time I've been through this, either.

I don't typically put much thought into band logos, but these ones immediately spring to my mind:

Rotting Christ
Sigfader
Blut aus Nord
Belphegor
Asmodeus
Absu
Darkthrone
Anaal Nathrakh
