if you really wanna outsmart them then say that they are using the fallacy 'argumentum ad populum'. jsut because a lot of people think they are doesnt make it true. especially when a band has loads of media hype and relies on so-called shock factor (ZOMG SCARY MASKS!) their reputation is usually far bigger than their actual talent.

I totally recommend Sadness Shall Prevail to any Avant-Garde fans. Its a fucked up album. Its actually kind of scaring me. The sounds are so weird, nice pianos with loads of noise and evil screams over the top.

But its great :).

recently completed Negura Bunget discography. happy day!

Sleep
Ufomammut
Wormphlegm

I like all of these bands. Your guitarist likes a lot of good doom and sludge. Maybe I'll look at the stuff on the list I haven't heard.

Yeah, I know.
There are Metal influences in there, but not enough apparently. A bit stupid really. There's definite Doom influence and its very Experimental.
Apparently they were up and were taken down. And Wiki has them down as 'Noisegrind'.

Check this album out though, you should like it seeing how you live your experimental stuff.

Anyway Soilwork, Darkane, Warbringer and Swallow The Sun are playing here on Feb. 12th.

I'm already seeing Warbringer with Kreator, exodus, etc. on April 10th and again on September 30th with Obituary, Goatwhore, Krisiun and The Berzerker.

But do you guys think I should go to see those other three bands?

Agalloch's The Misshapen Steed comes to mind almost immediately. That and basically every song on The White in particular, but like it's been said majority of their music fits the description perfectly. Gone by M83 is pretty haunting, Land of the Dead by Summoning is amazing, Mourners and Fortgang by Empyrium come to mind, Souvenirs by Alcest, Autumn by Yearning, Dismantling Devotion by Daylight Dies is one of if not my favorite instrumental of all time, Another Day by Dream Theater, Last Statement by Insomnium, I could probably make a nice long list if I felt like it.

So today i got into an argument with a dude. He liked We The Kings and I laughed when he said it, and when I said I listen to metal he said that metal is "the gayest genre ever, you can't even understand it."

To be fair to his side, Rob Halford. But seriously? We the Kings?

I'm pretty sure if you say to a mainstream indie/rock whatever listener that he should listen to metal, they pretty much assume you're talking about deathcore. And that sucks. Kids don't know what thrash metal or trve death metal is. Yeah. Deathcore sucks.

Worse. Shitty pop punk. Normally I'd link you to give you an idea of their sound, but you need to do it on your own time. I don't want to taint our hell with their music, it's bad enough i've mentioned their name.

People usually aren't even talking about deathcore. Bands that stereotypical people with no taste think are metal:

Slipknot
Disturbed
Korn
In This moment
As I lay dying
Rise against
Bullet for my valentine
Atreyu
Avenged Sevenfold
Unearth
Etc.

I honestly like some deathcore, although it isn't metal some of it can be decent. The only real problem is metalcore and NU metal.

Kids don't know what thrash metal

I can understand to an extent why some people wouldn't like thrash metal.

or trve death metal is.

Most people that know what "true" metal is but don't like it usually is because of death metal actually.

The screaming turns a lot of people off.

Why wouldn't people like it? It's the easiest type of metal to like.

Yeah, people don't understand that. I blame music stores personally, for selling crappy nu metal and metalcore CD's in a little section called the "Metal Section". Fucking tossers.

Some of the most famous and well known metal bands are thrash metal.

Why wouldn't people like it? It's the easiest type of metal to like.

I think some of the "Cleaner" stuff like progressive and power metal are easier to like.

Although it completely depends on the individual.

Newbury comics in October is the exception.

Seriously, during metal month they sell metalcore and Nu Metal and all but they also sell albums by every slightly big real metal band you could think of.

In fact half of my CDs I got from Newbury comics in October '07 and '08.

Real metal doesn't have screaming. >:(

What's your definition of real metal?

You mentioned death metal.

I call it cookie monster vocals or harsh vocals, while other people would consider it screaming.

What the fuck kind of metal do you listen to?

I meant, fucking indie/pop listening teenagers that I go to school with don't know about thrash metal.

Prog songs are too long and complicated/cheesey for them. And power metal is too cheesey.

In this country I go to a shop called JB HiFi. They sell real metal.

Real metal doesn't have screaming. >:(
What's your definition of real metal?

Real metal has absolutely no core or nu influence. Most real metal was made in the 80's/90's, nowadays it hardly exists because of the popularity of simple catchy easy listening music and just plain musical ignorance of modern society. No one appreciates music as an art form anymore. >:(

You mentioned death metal.

I call it cookie monster vocals or harsh vocals, while other people would consider it screaming.

Fucksticks would consider it screaming. Screaming = screamo/emocore. Not metal.

What the fuck kind of metal do you listen to?

Good death metal (Atheist, Death, Suffocation), good black metal (Burzum's last two black metal albums, Drudkh, Taake, Ulver) stoner/doom/sludge (Black Sabbath, Boris, Bongzilla, Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Kyuss, Melvins, Orange Goblin, Sleep, Weedeater). Death and black metal is flooded with horrible bands. I just listen to the good ones. I actually need recs on death and black bands.

But yeah. Sludge is my shit.

Why is it everytime someone tells a story of an argument with a non-Metalhead there is always some reference (by the original poster or someone else) to physical violence? No wonder Metalheads have a bad name if all you can think of is primitive aggression over open-mindedness and acceptance of other people opinions.
