*sigh*
'Tis a sad day when I am listening to Metalcore out of choice rather than having it forced upon me by some shitty music channel.
'Tis an even sadder day when I actually like it.
I have been somewhat partial to Metalcore in the past, admitting to liking Trivium's earlier efforts and some In Flames and not finding Parkway Drive totally and utterly repulsive if only for their eccessive use of blastbeats and having been enduring indie shit all day when I first listened to them.
So, yeah, As I Lay Dying.
I first saw them in an ad for Rockworld TV. They had the telltale signs of Metalcore; stop-start, chugga chugga riffs and a long haired vocalist utilising pseudo Death Growls as his primary singing style.
My curiosity was peaked, though, as they seemed Metal enough from that 15 second long clip or so.
Listening to the title track from their latest album, An Ocean Between Us, I was pleasantly surprised. It was as Metal as Metalcore got, while still being blatantly Metalcore. The song structure was complex (enough), the vocals were good (enough), and the musicianship as a whole was not that bad.
Although, I had one concern. The "Out of place, overly melodic chorus" as I like to call it. Breaking the flow of the otherwise aggressive song and reducing it to a pile of shit.
My fears were confirmed about 2 and a half minutes in.
However, I had realised something startling at this moment.
I did not care.
Save for that atrocious chorus, the song was not all that bad.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I may have found some Metalcore that actually appeals to me.
Should I seek professional help?
