Got a jam tomorrow with a potential Doom/Sludge bandmate :).
And the guitarist from Esoteric goes to my uni and is a friend of a friend. I believe Sensey mentioned them a recently.

My account is 5 years old today.

I should probably buy a Rotting Christ ticket for their January 8th show, the first of their 3 NY dates on their upcoming tour. My biggest complaint about is that's it's on a Thursday this time.

"MEGADETH is in the early stages of the songwriting process for the band's new album, which is tentatively expected sometime next year via Roadrunner Records. The CD is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie" Sneap, who produced MEGADETH's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner Records).

MEGADETH's forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who replaced Glen Drover at the end of last year.

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has issued a lengthy update via the "Forums" section of the band's official web site. An excerpt from his message follows below.

"Yesterday was the first official jam that Shawn [Drover, drums] and James [Lomenzo, bass] and I had, and I had a blast! Of course, it is still hard to play guitar and run back and forth from the jam room to the drum room where we all are set up to play with Shawn 'The Fastest Guitarist In The World' Drover. [See what I have to put up with?]

"We are working on the four songs that I mentioned and had to come up with a really strong chorus riff yesterday, which I believe I did by moving the bass line under what I was doing. We are still moving some of the sections around and determining if there is a call for another part or 'connector,' as I like to think of it.

"There is also a song that I have been trying to record for several records called 'Hornet Fuck', appropriately titled after a premature-ejaculating bandmate that we used to make fun of when he would take a 'girl,' by most outward appearances, into his bunk, and no sooner were the curtains drawn, then they were opened back up again. He would come back to where we were, and his 'hostage' would usually walk out embarrassed, but every once in a while they would both sit down, hot, steamy, covered in baby glue, and sweat, and act as if nothing happened. [Well, for one of 'em, I guess] He resented my nickname for him of 'Minuteman,' so I wrote this. Maybe in his (or hers/its) honor, I will dig up the lyrics and call it 'Minuteman' again. I surely am not going to call a song 'Hornet Fuck'."

I hope they have a tour this summer or something.

Listening to Mystic Prophecy of the Demon Knight all the way through for the first time, I have a few things to say.

First of all:
Best (Post-Kiske Helloween) Power Metal song ever.

Secondly:
What kind of 16 minute long song doesn't have a solo?

Wrong. I think you'll find it's And Then There Was Silence.

Evidently that one.

The song is stupid. That monologue by Lee is the worst piece of fantasy writing in history. 'The necronom alphabet, corresponding to the letters of his name.'
Saying that, it is good.

I haven't listened to Blind Guardian in ages, but I shall now.

Also, Keeper of the Seven Keys dwarfs them both. But Kiske-era Helloween isn't allowed to be compared with any other music because it is mainly comprised of the best sounds to ever be emitted by, or indirectly caused by a human being.

Secondly:
What kind of 16 minute long song doesn't have a solo?
Evidently that one.

It's weird, because every riff is good, which isn't something that can be said for most Power Metal, but the solo section is nothing more than some violins.

The song is stupid. That monologue by Lee is the worst piece of fantasy writing in history. 'The necronom alphabet, corresponding to the letters of his name.'

I'd like an opportunity to ask Lucca what 'Black Geometry' is and how it's different from regular Geometry.

I'd also like to know why regular Geometry doesn't enable me to walk across chasms.

Saying that, it is good.

That fast middle section with the harsh(ish) vocals is one of the most impressive I've ever heard.

A. Halloween is better.

Bullshit.

B. And Then There Was Silence is even better.

It's a good song, but it's a little bit schizophrenic.

"Look mommy! I'm Speed Metal! Now I'm Power Metal! Now I'm Classical!

From the A Night at the Opera Wiki article:
The track 'And then there was silence' is considered to be the best Power Metal song ever by most human beings on planet Earth.

Hm.

I do have one gripe with Keeper of the Seven Keys.

I can barely hear the guitars.

You have to accept the fact, that Kiske will forever be a Legend in the Power Metal scene.
It's pretty sad that he isn't with Helloween anymore. Andi Deris can still sing pretty well though. And the newest album of Helloween, Gambling With The Devil, still sounds pretty good.

Other than this, is work on Avantasia's newest album is pretty interresting, especially on the song Shelter From The Rain, on the album The Scarecrow. If you are a big Power Metal fan, you will also like to know that Kai Hansen and Khan from Kamelot have participated to this record. There is also a song featuring Alice Cooper... but I do not give a fuck...

It does, since you described it as "schizophrenic". I wouldn't call speed/power with classical influences schizophrenic. I'd call it.......uh....normal, common, usual, something along those lines.

I think that speed metal in itself doesn't really exist as a genre of metal...
You can have speed power metal, or maybe speed melodic death or stuff like that.
But just speed metal? what's that? cause I really do not know.

Speed Metal was just a term used to talk about Heavy Metal bands with faster tempo, that would later be called Thrash Metal.
But sometimes people use it to refer to power metal...
I find it kind of strange, really.

2. Drone isn't music.
3. (a) X band sucks, Y are much better.
(b) Shut the fuck up, Y are the epitome of ABC, wheras X display a certain D about them.
4. Who invented X genre?
5. Who perfected X genre?
6. VIKINGS. BLAH BLAH BLAH.
7. CELTS. BLAH BLAH BLAH.
8. *personal insult*
9. *personal rebuttal*
10. *arguments is forcibly ended.

We haven't done the last 4 in a while.

Mental Patient vocals you say? Who the fuck dropped you on the head and told you that was a good idea?

It's so Goddamn annoying.

Take Evile for example. They're one of the most generic Thrash bands ever, and yet they get by. They don't sound like shit either.

Innovation doesn't automatically make you good. This is a lesson that many Black and Drone bands need to learn.

Anyways, I wouldn't consider it music. It's interesting at the very least, but it's more like audio texture and noise than actual music; there's no structure, no dynamics, no melody. Rhythm can be heard occasionally, and that's a pretty broad definition of rhythm.

Response to Metal Hell 2008-11-21 20:15:41

At 11/21/08 06:29 PM, Centurion-Ryan wrote: You cut off your hand to get a perfect scream, big woop. Now you're a shit musician AND a deformed asshole.

It's a very good point. If I cut off my hand I don't think I'd scream that much as I know I'd be cutting my hand off for the purposes of screaming, which is just as fake. I'd probably pull a face and say "Aaah" at a not so loud volume whilst crying.

It'd be more effective to put a spider next to me when I'm sleeping and listen to the scream when I wake up.

Innovation doesn't automatically make you good. This is a lesson that many Black and Drone bands need to learn.

The whole point of innovation is to try something new, if it doesn't work it doesn't work. If it does however you've been innovative.
Considering how you just mentioned Evile as being generic its bizarre that you frown on innovation so much, seeing as thats ensuring something won't be generic.
