Getiin' in on dis.

First band that got me into Metal Was Metallica namely the song Enter Sandman. At 14 that is.
After that I got really into Death/Metalcore and the likes of As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Lamb of God, August Burns Red and Heaven Shall Burn. (Don't judge me! :P)

At 15 I discovered Melodic Death Metal, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Arch Enemy and the likes.

This went 'til I was about 16, then I got into the 'trver' stuff like Belphegor, God Dethroned, Rotting Christ and Hypocrisy. That's the way it's been up to now.

Actually, scratch that and replace it with Lost Horizon - Highlander (The One). I like Angra but they aren't my favorite and they have better songs than that one.

It was Fear Factory, Iron Maiden and Metallica. But for more info on my metal history, I got into those bands in late 2005 and then started exploring more metal bands (mostly power) in 2006 and my taste has been pretty much the same since, except I'm getting into more and more prog/classic rock music.

Though they aren't metal, System of a Down got me into heavy music in general.

Fair enough, but for me, System of a Down just lead a way for me to get into metal music.

Hey guys I need your help.
I'd like to create a list of the "Top 100 Heavy Metal Songs" and then broadcast them in a row on my DJ Show on Stickam. But the thing is I can't think of 100 Heavy Metal songs by myself and which ones are the best from each band.

Ah, sounds great. I won't mention any songs right now, but I can always talk to you about it on MSN/AIM/Stickam later.

Response to Metal Hell 2008-11-14 09:29:09

Hmmm. Let's try and make this a little easier on me and the voting.

Instead of choosing certain songs. Choose the best Bands and I'll play their best songs on the Top 100 Countdown when it happens.

It'll be easier to do a Band Countdown then a Song Countdown.

Does anyone know of any good Black Metal bands? So far I have Rotting Christ, Shores of Sheol, Burzum, Mayhem, old Dimmu Borgir, Sarcofago, Borknagar and Immortal.

Also, I found a Metal band that sings about Dwarves.

Response to Metal Hell 2008-11-14 11:45:00

Out of boredom I made this list.

Top 10 Metal Intros (with notes on why they're great).

10. Battery - Metallica
Had to include a Metallica song on the list somewhere and this one just stood out to me the most. The first notes you hear when you play Master of Puppets (the album) it sets the mood for what's to come.

9. Black Metal - Venom
The sounds of scratching signal the intro to Venom's second album and the birth of the genre that brought us Bathory, Dimmu Borgir, and Celtic Frost.

8. Into the Coven - Mercyful Fate
A folkish tune? Oh could this possibly be a song of whimsy? NO! This only brings about the Hell of Mercyful Fate and their rise to power! Oh and it got some attention from Tipper Gore THAT'S HOW AWESOME IT IS!

7. Overkill - Motorhead
The fast drumming and quick bassline bring about the ultimate Metal Party Song. Though a short intro it's fast it's loud and it's fun. Just like last early 80s metal was.

6. Phantom of the Opera - Iron Maiden
Riffs on top of Riffs on top of Riffs. This early piece from Di'anno Maiden is what Iron Maiden is all about and is instantly recognized not just by Iron Maiden fans but by Metal fans.

5. Fast as a Shark - Accept
Now here's a fun one. The song starts out with a record of an old Folk German Song, a few seconds in the record scratches and BOOM UDO IS SCREAMING and everything is going off at once. It's just amazing.

4. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
As much as I hate this song, the intro pretty much got me into the band and everyone else into Heavy Metal (it was one of the first songs). So it's a pretty memorable song. The sounds of a mechanical "Iron Man" announcing himself to the world, that's pretty cool.

3. The Moor - Opeth
This intro is something you don't expect, a long peaceful acoustic tune. But once it's over it kicks into an amazing Opeth song that just blows your mind and expectations.

2. Painkiller - Judas Priest
NUT PUNCH! Holy hell what an intro. This beginning is nuts with drums all over the place and once the Guitar Riff kicks in... hold on to your balls again because they're going to get fucked.

1. Am I Evil? - Diamond Head
I want to kiss the man who thought of this intro riff. It's just... beautiful. The best Metal Intro of all time and most people think Metallica made the song. What a world we live in. Either way this intro oozes amazing. So go listen now (it's also a good song).

Progressive:

Brutal Death:

Brutal Tech Death:

I suppose I'll jump in on the latest bandwagon.
I was raised on 80's Metal, You know hair bands, Rock N' Roll ect. So I liked AC/DC, Kiss, Judas Preist and stuff since I was young.
Then I suppose at about 12/13 I really got into Thrash Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera ect. I also loved Rob Zombie.
About that same time I ran across Cannibal Corpse and came to like it.
Around 14 or so I got into the Cores and Slipknot. (I know I'm ashamed) Progressively got got into heavier stuff every so months, I got into Job For A Cowboy, and also some real metal.
When I was like 15 I joined this club and my Metalness grew quickly, lots of good recamendations so I grew quickly.
And now I think I am vastly supeior in the ways of metal, however I would like more Black Metal...

When I die. It will be in a blaze of glory.

I have another question for you guys:
Does anyone know of any good Black Metal bands with good recording?

Cause I just listenned to Behemoth older stuff and Moontower... and I was kind of wondering why you would record with terrible quality, on purpose...

The goal of Black Metal is to make things sound hollow. It creates a type of atmosphere. Black Metal is relies on atmosphere.

What genre would you classify In Flame's as since 2005 or before? I heard they WERE Melodic Death Metal back in the 90's but are now just Alternative Metal/Rock. And what would you classify their song, Take This Life, as?

Metalcore, With just a splash of melody, It's really boring music now, but meh.

Also, how does it feel to have reached the peak of heaviness/hardness as far as music goes?

It's Sort of Depressing really.
It's just that, Like, The music I listen to everyday has the most complex, the fastest, The most brutal, the most progressive and avant-garde styles that you can find, I can never get more Extreme, And that pisses me off.

Finally, how would you guys feel if one day I decided to make up a survey for all you Death Heads out there? Just a few questions for my own interest?

I love surveys.
If everyone else refuses, you can just PM it to me ;*

Also Guys, Finally got myself a Girl, We've only known each other for 4 days and she wants a Relationship, HUGE sparks.

She Isn't very metal, She likes stuff like Muse and AX7, but She liked some Gojira I showed her, and said Blotted Science was "Weird, in a very funny and Cool way"

more later :D

Thing about heaviness is over time it sounds less heavy as you get used to it.
So you'll always be finding something more heavy, then you'll get used to it and realise the band you original listened to was heavier... and then you'll get used to it.
I used to think SOAD was the most brutal thing imaginable.

There is still a way to sound hollow without sounding crappy.

And there is still a couple of nice Black Metal bands who knows how to creat that type of atmosphere with good quality.
