Slipknot followed next and then Metallica which I thought was pretty awesome, I Killed The Prom Queen has also had some huge influence on me.
Now, I'm slowly getting deeper with Gojira offering some decent music to me.

The only metal bands I see there are Metallica and Gojira.

The Antithesis of Light is a good album, but its not very depressing :(. Nice and atmospherical though. Just not that miserable.

Though they aren't metal, System of a Down got me into heavy music in general. I was already predisposed to metal though, having listened to nothing but Led Zeppelin the summer between the seventh and eighth grades. After that, Nightwish. I was horribly close to becoming a Dragonforce fan, but thank Odin I couldn't find any of their CDs. I also listened to a lot of Primus, and that was pretty influential.

But if you want the truth of it, I only really really became interested in metal after watching Metalocalypse. Sad, but true.

After this, I didn't go through the traditional "gateway" bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, or Black Sabbath. As far as I can remember, I went straight to obscure (for a non-metalhead, at least) bands; Tyr, Wintersun and Ensiferum.

I heard Blackened by Metallica and then started listening to the big four of thrash. Then when I came here I typed all the bands that you guys talked about into Limewire. So I had heaps of thrash and power/prog stuff, and then I typed Mayhem in and I remember being so freaked out by Funeral Fog that I deleted it. Then I started exploring death/black stuff. Found out black metal kicked arse. Bought Ulver's first album, loved it, brought me up on folk influenced black metal, which turned me onto stuff like Vintersorg, Borknagar, Otyg, Storm, Woods of Ypres, Drudkh, Enslaved, Windir.

I still fucking hate folk metal like Fintroll, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum and stuff. I hate it. Grrr. Overproduced metalcore with violins is all it is. Otyg is how you play folk metal. Storm is great too. I wish there were more bands like them.

Yeah I said some shit about Vintersorg's music being weak and not heavy enough. Well, it's true, Vintersorg's stuff isn't really heavy enough, to slow with too many power metal influences, but I admit It's still a great listen.

Bought Cathedral's The Carnival Bizzare for 3 bucks in a second hand shop. Got me into doom.

And that's my life story bitches.

AHAHAHAHA, Man I am so ashamed of this.

11-12: Cradle of Filth, for a long time, then I got into Dimmu borgir, but still liked CoF.

13: then went on to Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, and In Flames which my friends listened to but ISTILL liked CoF, and Dimmu.

13-14: And one day my friend said "I know another black metal band, MUCH heavier, They're called Dark Funeral!" (I know that CoF isn't BM)

So I decided to check this band out, Shit got real, and I found more and more black metal, Burzum, Emperor, Mayhem, and Limbonic art.

I liked how shocked people were about all the "Evil Satany stuff" So I heard about Deicide, And I started to blast that shit in school constantly.

then I got into Slayer, and had a VERY long phase.

15: Slayer phase still at large, I listened to it all the time, and Came here to find more metal, you guys recommended Amon amarth, Wintersun and Ensiferum and such...

So I started to get VERY into Melodeath, Especially Amon Amarth which was my favourite band for a long time, you guys got me into the viking phase by Giving me more Viking metal, which was REAL viking metal, Folk and shit.

I was on Metalmusicforever (R.I.P) and I ran into Anaal Nathrakh, It was so evil, so brutal, I Could never go back, I browsed a gajillion bands there in the brutal section, and got a SHITLOAD into Death metal, brutal Death metal, and someone showed me Necrophagist, And I got a shitload into Technical stuff.

16: I got last.fm, My search for Technical music brought me Gorguts and !T.O.O.H!, I got into Avant-Garde.

Now I'm mostly into Death metal, Technical, Brutal, but basically into anything.
When I found Avant-Garde, My mind opened up, and I basically love all metal, 'Cept Power metal, It's just too poppy and Happy, And to me it all sounds the same, Like Disney songs, I don't like pop in general, but I'm getting into punk (Only the real punk, and underground stuff from Iceland) I used to hate punk SO much.

I basically love most music now.
Also, LOL@ Me not having of your stupid "starter bands", and yeah, I also dislike most "classic rock" Fuck you rolling stones.

Also LOL@ me writing my entire musical history.

I agree (cept the Metalcore bit), its too happy and 'lol party music'.
Music shouldn't be happy.

Listening to In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend. Its good. I really don't think I'm going to top WfaD in terms of enjoyment though :(. Thats a shame, but I'm currently loving Doom.

Bandwagons are fun.

At the tender age of 13 I was introduced to Metallica and Pantera (like most). At fourteen my tastes developed (though not necessarily metal) and I began to like bands like Tool, Primus, Rush, and Dream Theater. By 15, I liked more Slayer and Megadeth (whom I still adore).

At 17, my tastes developed into more melodic death metal like At the Gates and Children of Bodom and sadly, Killswitch Engage. At 18, I completely dissociated myself from metalcore and I got into more true death metal and thrash. A while later I got into doom which it and its various subgenres make up most of my favorite bands/genres.

Around the same time I got into Ministry and Godflesh. When I turned 19, I got into my indie phase when I liked Isis, Pelican, Old Man's Gloom, Jesu, etc, along with traditional doom and stoner. And now, I finally got into black metal, specifically the Greek black metal scene with Rotting Christ, recently, and it will only evolve from here on out.

Here I am, bored with everything.

Full Metal History (why not?)

Got into Metal as a result of learning guitar and reading about all these good guitarists, so I liked stuff like Metallica, Pantera, and Metalcore bands as a result of liking the guitarists. Got into stuff like Slayer and Megadeth and Thrashy/Groove bands like that.
Started listening to Prog stuff like The Mars Volta and that stemmed to Prog Metal like Dream Theater and Power Metal as its all very lovely and clean. I probably joined around this era. That meant opening my tastes to stuff like Necrophagist, Opeth and checking out all the popular Black/Death bands. Never really cared for either much though.

Overtime I just broadened all the stuff I liked anyway, so just listening to new Power, Prog, Death and whatnot. And Folky stuff too I suppose, but I'm not overly fond of it.

Then recently I've got back into Metal thanks to Avant-Garde stuff. That took my attention for a good few months. I've started to appreciate Black a lot more in the last month too.

And at the moment I'm totally jizzing over Doom. I'm really like Reverend Bizarre :).

I think Metallica are the only acceptable band on there. And they're not that credible.

We're all currently being very nostalgic. Look at the bands we're mentioning and give them a listen. If you like, come back. Otherwise you're not welcome :).

Folk metal should have folk melodies played with folk instruments, but with heavy guitars. That type of folk metal is happy tame heavy metal power chords with traditional instruments just mixed in. Grrrr.

Folk/black metal is way better anywho.

i got into metal from a weird direction, and pretty late on too not till i was about 16. first i got into heavier bands linked to prog & classic rock like black sabbath and king crimson. then because of the major black sabbath obsession i stumbled on doom metal. oh and i found out about the melvins through listening to grunge. then i joined here and discovered all the rest...

Revolver has a good article about the oral history of Florda death metal! Chris Barnes was in the interveiw along with Benton and a shit load of people. Barnes mentioned at a show in 91 where he almost got killed for his lyrics he writes. Like three east L.A gang members came on his bus somehow and confronted him (one just got out of a state pen) and he had a gun in his belt. They said if you keep writeing shit like this we gonna kill you now.

He said calmly listen guys I respect your opinoin (whatever the fuck that means) Then the manager somehow got them off the bus. CRAZY!!

if by hardcore metal, you mean the genre metalcore, then yes, this is not the place for that.

if you mean hardcore as in heavy, the metal we listen to is heavier than you could possibly imagine, judging from your tastes.

Hey guys I need your help.
I'd like to create a list of the "Top 100 Heavy Metal Songs" and then broadcast them in a row on my DJ Show on Stickam. But the thing is I can't think of 100 Heavy Metal songs by myself and which ones are the best from each band.

So I'm coming to you guys for help.
What do you say?
