Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to seeing what riffs they've blatantly stolen this time around.

Probably a bit more Metallica, and a couple of black metal riffs, seeing as they're sound is on par with 'Gorgoroth' etc and whatever else was said in that post before.

I'd be pretty amused if they stole a page from Emperor's book and added a shitload of synth.

I'd say they'll go to more of an underground band to get kiddy kvlt points and try to keep too many people from noticing and beating the shit out of whats his name. Matt. I wish some of my friends and I could go to one of their concerts just to throw bottles at them until we got kicked out.

ARGH I just ran out of CD-Rs.

I'm in the process of burning all my Agalloch, Burzum, Drudkh, Opeth, Otyg, Taake, Ulver, Vintersorg and Windir to disc and listening to them on my CD player instead of playing my music on the computer. It's much more enjoyable. And I don't have to use Last.fm anymore, that was driving me nuts.

Haha, Opeth is so the odd one out in that list. I guess Agalloch kind of is too, that fucking weird band. You know that's all i'm gunna be able to listen to if I go through with this.... I should check out some new bands. It's just METAL metal; power, prog, thrash, death, is just boring the shit out of me. Black is starting to piss me off too. Burzum are still great, but Gorgoroth and Mayhem i'm sick of. They all just got shit after their first album or so.

Bands can be so inconsistant, I mean, i'm not burning Burzum's ambient stuff, not burning Otyg's last album because it was shit, i'm not burning anything after Ulver's first three albums, and i'm not burning Vintersorg's two weird prog albums either, only their first three and then the recent one.

I'm not sure i'll even burn Opeth's Damnation and Deliverance, they were that crap. I don't even understand why Opeth made those two albums so shit, after such a good run of great albums. There's a few different Opeths once you get into them; the technical twin-guitar metal Opeth, which was their first two albums, then the OPETH opeth era, from MAYH to Blackwater Park, the shitness of Damnation and Deliverance, and the proggy Ghost Reveries and Watershed, although Watershed wasn't that proggy, Ghost Reveries was just overly so.

I'm sort of starting to dislike my own tastes in music, I mean they're so restricting. I just can't seem to enjoy what I want to enjoy, i'd love to just like power and prog, but they bore me. Sometimes i'm not so sure though, I give Mercyful Fate's Mellisa a spin and get really into it, then just change my mind and decide to stick with my other bands. But why am I doing this? What the fuck is wrong with me that I have to delete my Dream Theater from my library when I once swore them as my favourite band? Why can't I listen to death metal without yawning? ARGHHHHHHHH FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKk

Damnation is probably in my top 3 Opeth albums, it's pretty great IMO.

Maybe you have to listen to more non-metal. I like to listen to alternative, 90's, ska, blues, etc.

Why does Last.fm drive you nuts?
It requires no effort whatsoever. All it does is log what you listen to, its not like you need to regulate anything.

the shitness of Damnation

Damnation owns.

I'm sort of starting to dislike my own tastes in music, I mean they're so restricting. I just can't seem to enjoy what I want to enjoy.

The point is not to enjoy what you want to enjoy. But to enjoy what you enjoy. Forcing yourself to to listen to something or not to listen to something for any reason is pathetic.
The only reason I can think you're doing this is for some kind of social reputation... and thats sad.

It's obviously wrong to say its their best album as it defeats the point of Opeth being a Metal band.
But of all their albums, Damnation is the one I enjoy listening to the most.

Maybe you have to listen to more non-metal. I like to listen to alternative, 90's, ska, blues, etc.

I recommend Imogen Heap and Battles :).

Agreed to the Fullest possible extent of agreement.
I used to listen only to Tr00 metal and tr00 metal only, And I was so fucking bored.
Then I realized, a few months ago, Why the fuck was I doing that?
I'll listen to whatever the fuck I want, why should I follow anyone else and be unhappy because It's not what I want?

I don't like Cheesy power metal, I don't like any Punk, or anything about it, I don't like "RnB", or any Pop that was a hot chick singing, I don't like metalcore, I think it tries too hard, and that It all sounds the same.

I do however, like a majority of Rap, Techno, SOME hip hop, all metal besides what I already said and some of the blander stuff, I love classical, but not the linear type, and lots more but too lazy to list, just like blues and stuff, and rock.

I don't care what you think, Who are you to say that your taste is "better" than mine?

Do it.
It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO liberating.

Thanks. I love noise. Yeah, I've been meaning to start listening to the Boredoms. And Japanoise in general. The lead singer from Boredoms has a shitload of side projects, but the only one I can think of right now is The Gerogerigegege.

And I guess this discussion of a completely irrelevant genre comes at a good time, because it seems we're all now talking about what else we like besides metal. Here goes:

I like indie, ska, noise rock, folk, folk-punk, experimental anything, industrial, jazz and hip hop. Yes, I like hip hop. PS: hip hop and rap are the same thing.

But I don't like (or just don't bother listening to): Metalcore, nu metal, bubblegum pop (aguilera, britney, paris, etc.), punk (there are execptions), generic electronic music (i like how it sounds but i don't want to buy an album that sounds like seven hundred other ones so i don't bother buying albums), shitty "alternative" rock, shitty rap, reggae (it sounds the same), country (but bluegrass is okay) and there's some other stuff too.

good to see somebody realize that.
I like my metal, but mostly doom, depressive black and power. but furtermore I enjoy postrock, drum&bass, kleinkunst (dunno what's the correct english term, let's keep it at singer-songwriter stuff.), some jazz, punk and hardcore, regular rock and some classical (there is to much to fit under that umbrella to like it all).

In essence, music usually needs to be able to awaken emotions, the exact ways in which it does so is less important.

At 7/31/08 04:04 PM, mavica wrote: also, penisclown's post made me ask this question: do you guys (and gals) still buy cd's, or other music media?

I buy CDs when i can, but I don't have the proper funds to buy everything I want. So i get friends to burn me stuff, and as a last resort, I'll rapdishare or megaupload. Also iTunes, when I have a gift card or something. Since my money is scarce, I usually try to buy CDs of bands I already like, and buy albums that I know are good so that A) I feel good about supporting the artist, B) I don't waste my money on something that's shit and C) if a fan of the band looks at my CD collection, they'll see good albums there. Hah.

also there are some bands that I just can't download albums of, such as animal collective or streetlight manifesto. it's weird. i just feel bad about it because i've bought all the other stuff, so i have to rely on friends burning or me buying.

I know what you mean. I have to buy Dream Theater and Mars Volta's stuff (I got Bedlam in Goliath day it was out and haven't listened to it yet), and I'd say Opeth too but I kinda fell off the wagon there :(.
And I'll definately be buying all Imogen Heap's albums when I can.
