Led Zepplin isn't metal, its more rock, but they had an influence in my opinion, on heavy metal back in the day.

Hello guys,

short summary of what's going on here:

Quit my job here due to the company dwindling into bankruptcy and I'll hopefully start with the new one before July.

I've also taken a deep look into guitar anatomy the last few months and me and a friend have already built a few guitars from scratch and we've also started selling them - and people seem to like what they get. So if this runs smoothly, I might as well start a small business here as it's not only so much fun to build this stuff, it also seems to sell rather well.

So, as you can see, lots of things going on here right now. I'll leave you with a picture of our first sold guitar here, it's called the"Warbird" and has a Heavy Strat design:

Facts:

Basswood body with a flamed maple top - see-thru finish
Maple neck
Floyd-Rose-licensed tremolo with a vintage tremolo arm (not on the picture)
Dual humbuckers, handwound-alnico (not done by us though - too noobish :P)
Gotoh machineheads chrome
Zakk Wylde Boomers 011 - 062 (i think)

and the thing sounds pretty sweet.

Sweet, so you know what im going through now. Well i have a question or 3 for you, one, the headstock and the nuts and whatnot for the strings, did you line them up with some scale or some crap or did you just grab another neck and put it down and drill the holes.

Second question, that is a fucking sweet finish, is that the natural wood grain or is that a plastic mould over the wood. If it isn't what did you use for the finish and how did you get that crazy glass/gloss finish on it.

Third question, how are you?

We just took another neck and drew a mold with the exact dimensions. We used a fat paddle neck (like the ones they sell on Warmoth/Rockinger but without the drillings) and a pre-finished saddle.

Natural wood grain. To be honest, I was too scared of fucking up the arched top, so we let it get made - so the finish wasn't done by us, but I was fucking amazed by the look of it.

We also made a typical strat with a nice matt white finish and a flying V with a black binding and the same white finish, but as these were our first, the finish wasn't quite perfect - that's why I didn't want to fuck up the finish on the Warbird.

Third question, how are you?

Doing great, thanks. I'm still so glad that I moved. I love this place. How are you?

Sweet, so i did that bit right on my one.

Natural wood grain.

HOT. That is a nice slab of wood you picked up there.

The strat sounds sexy, and so does the flying V. I wouldn't mind seeing them.

Sounds good man, glad to hear you're happy and all.

How are you?

Me, im not to bad, can't complain. And now another question related to them guitars you're making, do you guys have templates or are you just doing it all free-hand?

Yeah, that's also the most expensive part of the whole thing :P

I have only mobile phone pictures right now (and I completely ripped the V apart again) but I'm building a website now and when it's done, I'll give you the link. It's going to have pictures of all models we made so far.

Good.

It depends on the shape. For example, I suck at drawing :P My friend doesn't, so he does the LP shape free-hand, but all others need templates.

Sweet, that should look pretty awesome.

I suck at drawing as well, so i made a template for mine that i basically took straight from a rip off strat, but gave it features of a Strat and features of a Tele, and whatnot, just to cover myself for the whole copyright ordeal, you wont pick out anything exactly the same if you were to compare mine to a real Strat.

Also another question. The frets, professionally cut or done on the cheap (but properly) by yourself?

I hope so. I'm working on a little myspace site and another friend of mine will do the real thing later.

Yeah, that's a good thing. Fender seem to be pretty picky about copies. So do Gibson.

Another thing I didn't quite have the guts to do. It's professionally cut, by a German craftsman.

I should have gotten mine professionally cut as well, instead i found the exact scale for 25.5" necks and cut them myself (mitre saw if your interested in doing it yourself), except i may have screwed up 1 or 2 of em. Good thing this guitars only going up on the wall for show, my next one is gonna be my own design.

Also, metal.

Happy 18th to me!

I can now enjoy the wondrous spoils of buying Alcohol and many other previously forlorn commodities.

Australia FTW

To bad it's still the 13th and not the 14th in NG time.

Iron Maiden soft? Haha, i don't know what you've been listening to my friend. Despite being in the metal game for twenty something years, they still are pretty heavy. You obviously can't compare them to Nile or Belphegor, but still.

Yeah I meant in the broad scheme of things (comparing to everything, I mean). Don't get me wrong I love Maiden. I was just using it as a comparison as one of the softer bands in Metal.

There are probably softer bands that are still classified as metal. I just don't know of them to use :P

I just got Opeth's latest album Watershed, and I must say, I'm impressed. There's a lot of guitar heavy parts, and the solos are pretty awesome. There's also some random stuff (a chick singing on the first track Coil) and some electronic sounding parts on Hessian Peel but it's overall great. Anyone else pick it up?

I admit I forgot that little tidbit. Either way, I've never heard Bleach, is it worth buying?

well it depends, there is still a massive hardcore influence (the good stuff like black flag) and post-punk/noise rock like big black or scratch acid. theres also the begginings of the poppier nevermind style with a couple of songs like 'about a girl'. if you already like nirvana/grunge plus any of that then go for it.

plus theres the fact that the mainstream music media are generally ignorant bastards when it comes to rock and metal history- elvis came and invented it, then jimi became the greatest guitarist to ever live ever, then after the terrible prog era rock music was saved by the sex pistols. the end.
Is that your opinion or the media's?

haha sorry i was being totally tongue in cheek. yeah, thats the 'traditional' media interpritation. big respect to terrorizer magazine & similar that give a more researched balanced view. they had a great prog special a while back that went into the more heavy & obscure stuff and how it all relates to metal.

Listening to Unexpect: '_wE, Invaders'.
I like it. First I've listened of Unexpect besides the first song on In a Flesh Aquarium which I accidentally played thinking it was _wE, Invaders.

It's very good :). Interesting, well produced, good musically, good leads and nice a quirky :).
