Anyway, I have been listening to Trans Siberian Express and listened to all of Ulver's early work. It's not half as good as their stuff now, but still not bad. Mediocre really.

I must disagree for their first two full lengths. Ulver did a lot for the Black metal genre and they are far from mediocre. I just am not one of those "Grr Ulver needs MOAR BLACK METUHLS!" guys - I like the new stuff as well. I just don't think at any point has Ulver been mediocre.

basically, yeah. i'd say experimental melodeath/black. not too bad, but i'm trying to find out if they would be worth listening to (i've heard their first two albums are really good and their latter two aren't so great). So far i've mostly found stuff from their new album, and i wanna hear some more recent stuff.
