As for the whole "is or are" debate. I asked a friend of mine who is has an English Major from Berkley University. If you are referring to a group it is not plural. If you were referring to multiple groups it would be plural.
So for example:
"Gorgoroth is a good band"
"Gorgoroth and Mayhem are good bands"

On the subject of "is/are" (sam is right), when you talk about Burzum, do you say "him" or "they" or what. Because Burzum isn't his stage name, it's the name of the band. And his stage name is Count Grishnakh
example:
