Not really...I believe that Slipknot is metal and to think otherwise is just amusing because slipknot has a yell/growl type of singer, double bass pedal beats, low tuned down guitars, is fast paced. How is that not metal? Most metal bands have the exact same characteristics, but I guess since they are famous and succeeded as a band they must be hated!
I don't care about fame. I like cannibal corspe, and while they aren't on par with Slipknots level of fame and success, i don't care.
Now, on to raping your argument:
Yelling/growling doens't make it metal. SWANS' Michael Gira, especially in the early years, had a vocal style that was primarily shouting, commanding, yelling, with a gutteral growl or two. SWANS are certainly not metal.
Double bass pedal is not a miracle musical component that makes anything metal. There are metal bands with no or little double bass, and bands that have double bass that are not metal. If i went up to Ringo Starr, commandeered his drumset and started playing double bass, the beatles would not be metal.
Downtuned guitars is also not a recipe for metal. Plenty of metal bands down downtune their guitars and basses significantly, and many not at all. Furthermore, do you know what genre heavily downtuned guitars is a standard of? Guess what! It's nu-metal, and amazingly enough that is exactly what Slipknot are.
And this is my personal favourite facet of your shit argument:
Speed. Speed does not equal metal. Ever. Is Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" metal because it's tempo is blazingly fast? No. Is ska metal because it's tempos are fast and upbeat? No. Is hardcore metal because it's fast and loud? No.
Furthermore, Doomsword is not fast. Neither is Yearning, Mael Mordha, Candlemass, Electric Wizard, or any other doom metal band you can think of. And sure enough: they're metal.
Now, on to why Slipknot are not metal, but nu-metal.
They have a turntablist. I have never seen a self-respecting metal band with a turntablist. Feel free to correct me, without using nu-metal examples that is.
They rap. Definitely not a trait of metal.
The bass is heavily prominent, and the guitars are low and hella distorted, with an emphasis on groove. Metal has a focus on technical proficiency, but nu-metal takes it the other way and just tries to make grooving riffs. Less focus on melody, more on movability.
I don't consider "nu metal" a genre...I'm not even sure what the hell it is supposed to be..Famous bands probably..but whatever..
Nu metal = Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Disturbed, and Machine Head.
Main characteristics:
rapping, turntables, downtuned guitars (like, really downtuned), prominent bass guitar, emphasis on groove and rhythm, angsty lyrics, and are more accessible to the general populace than metal.
All in all I consider slipknot metal, and I asked how they weren't metal, and I don't believe that has ever been addressed to me, except that they are "nu metal and we don't consider that metaL"...
See above. Ask and you shall receive.
