At 35 years old, I highly doubt that Tiki is going to get any offers to play RB, at least with a championship contender, although it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up with the Patriots, if only to get to that ring and nothing else.

Junior Seau tried that and we all know what it got him. Few years later it's clear that he never gotten over it and tried to do what he did.

I liked Tiki when he played for the Giants and despite what he said about his former teammates after his retirement (which resulted in him eating some crud a year later), I was one of those who wished that he stay for at least another year so he can get the ring (though not many people saw that one coming, not even Strahan since he was kinda close to retiring as well). But in the end, what a joke.

The NFLPA decertified earlier today so now it's in the hands of lawyers and the courts now. It wasn't too unexpected, but I kind of wished they would have reached a deal instead of having something doled out by a judge.

Guess it doesn't matter much to me; college football will kickoff the same since the NCAA has an abundant cheap human labor with little to no rights.

UFL! UFL! UFL!

Somewhere in Sacramento, Daunte Culpepper is smiling.

The fairly large number of NFL washouts (Tatum Bell, Matt Gutierrez, Michael Clayton, Maurice Clarett, DeDe Dorsey, Jeff Garcia, Ahman Green, Cato June, Marcus McCauley, Josh McCown, Michael Pittman, Stuart Schweigert, Stephen Hauschka, Marcel Shipp, DJ Shockley, Odell Thurman, LaBrandon Toefield) are probably pretty happy too.

Where do we go now? Chris Johnson said he'd consider a track career...

Hopefully, the lawyers and the courts don't get stuck in the mud and drag this any longer than it has to, we all know how messy it can be when the courts and lawyers get involved with a sports league, {i.e the MLB steroid scandal.} Let's hope Congress doesn't ask for an investigative meeting between the players and the owners, because then the shit will hit the fan on both sides.

Guess it doesn't matter much to me; college football will kickoff the same since the NCAA has an abundant cheap human labor with little to no rights.

Makes me wonder why Congress doesn't investigate the NCAA and the BCS for running a racketeering ring we call College Football. Seriously, the schools need to pay the players, so that way, they would be less tempted to take "illegal" benefits from boosters and outsiders, {which frankly, I don't know how that can be illegal in the first place.} I mean, if teams like Ohio State and Oregon are flushed with cash, it only makes sense to give the players a little bit of that money for playing college football.

Looks like this thread is in a lockout.

Anyway I have a question, why is it that there are some people still whining about Plunkett not in the HOF?

I mean are they kidding me?

Also on a unrelated note, in one of the youtube videos, a sore loser Pats fan claimed that the Super Bowl XLII was fixed and that Strahan used steroids.

I wonder if it's Seau behind the youtube account?

Well the article's right in a way, it does affect my view of Tom Brady. If he can help succeed ending the bs lockout, I'll like him better than I usually do.

I wonder if it's written by Dick Young

Certainly can't be any more damaging than him busing a move in Rio for Carnival with some sort of a ponytail thing. :P

Even as a Raiders fan, I'm inclined to agree with you. For the majority of his career, he was a huge letdown considering he was a number 1 overall pick. Even the good years with the Raiders didn't produce that amazing of stats for him, and not that great of teams. Super Bowl Champs, yes, but not by dominating every team week in and week out. Just showing up in the big games. 15 year career with very few positive parts. Now Tim Brown on the other hand deserves it ASAP.

Because people think that he won a lot with the Raiders {including 2 Super Bowls}, which means it would be enough justification for him to get in the HOF. The reality was that he was a decent QB, but he spent his first 5 years in total mediocrity with the Patriots in the early 70's, and even when he got to the Raiders, he was still an average QB in terms of production. More or less, he was the Phil Simms and Ben Roethlisberger of the 70's.

Also on a unrelated note, in one of the youtube videos, a sore loser Pats fan claimed that the Super Bowl XLII was fixed and that Strahan used steroids.

I detect a hint of jealousy on the part of the Pats fan. I suppose it also has to do with the fact that the Patriots are 0-2 in playoff games since SB XLII.

I wonder if it's Seau behind the youtube account?

I would imagine, considering that was his best {and probably his only shot}, at winning a SB ring.

To be honest I though he was referring to LaDainian Tomlinson since he wears that visor and is number 21. I didn't realize it was anime as well.

Come to think of it, the creator {Riichiro Inagaki} of Eyeshield 21 must've been a huge football fan, and particularly a fan of LaDainian Tomlinson, because he and Sena are pretty similar in a lot of ways, {number of his jersey, wearing a visor, how he runs the ball at the time.} but I think it sounds too coincendental.

See, it is totally relevant.
And you told me to talk about it in the anime club, how about no, most people into anime don't like football.

The reason I brought it up (besides the definite Tomlinson reference) is that I've been reading the manga and I'm seeing several possible flaws in sportsmanship and such. I believe I've seen several techniques in the series that use illegal maneuvers, like 'holding', to hinder or carry out a play, without being penalized. What the fuck is up with that? I've never seen an NFL player grab a guy's shirt to take him out without being penalized, so wtf?

Well, a lot of anime fans who don't like football actually did enjoy the series, if only because of the novelty aspects, {and vice versa.} Of course, being a football fan, I would natrually be intrigued by a Japanese take on American football, and if I do remember correctly, it's has a cult like following there among fans. {Both the anime/manga and the sport itself.} And if the NFL lockout spills over into the fall, then we probably need to find another source for our football fix, even if it comes from the other side of the Pacific.

I noticed that as well, but being an anime/manga series, it's going to omit some of the rules, if it means keeping the story going, because if was entirely realistic, then it would take forever and a half to finish one game in the manga/anime. It's similar to movies like "The Longest Yard", and "Any Given Sunday", where some of the rules aren't going to be applied 100% of the time, if because it's to keep the story from slowing down.

Still though, Shin's "Spear Tackle" obviously is an illegal move. I think they could still follow the rules and get in some cool shit since most of the time it follows the rules and when it breaks the rules it's usually something that someone who doesn't know football wouldn't really see as playing dirty (maybe). To me, it just sort of feels like the writer is insulting my knowledge of the game.

I haven't seen all of The Longest Yard, is that the one with Morgan Freeman in it?

Response to American Football Discussion 2011-04-11 17:19:36

Also in the series Eyeshield 21 a game ends in a draw without OT and a defensive lineman is allowed to literally break players.

They bend a lot of rules because there's little point in getting too technical for a Japanese audience and they want to make it more entertaining.

Everyone knew about him, it's like asking us if we know Aikman is a morbidly overrated QB in the 1990s.

To think the Colts had to decide between him and Peyton Manning.

I'm sure that San Diego wanted to have that pick back in '98. In retrospect, the Colts shouldn't even have debated on whether to take Manning or Leif, much like the Portland Trailblazers passed up Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant. That's generally how the draft works, when you get a pick right, you're an all-time genius, if you get it wrong, you set your franchise back 5 years or so, and I should know, being a Bengals fan and all. Akili Smith, Dan Wilkerson, David Pollack, {due to injury.} etc.

The NFL schudule released last night, which is really moot on their part if they can't get this lockout finished before the season starts. Although the most interesting matchup, {to me at least}, is going to be the Bears vs. Broncos in Denver, and you better believe that Bronco fans are rip Cutler about sitting in the NFC championship game.

Jets: Hey Giants, sure you won the Super Bowl against the team with a perfect record but we made the AFC championship games twice, can you beat that?

Honestly if that's the best Jets can do, I don't know what to say. Frankly they're like the Mets, they boast but in the end...

Apprently, they can't seem to shut up about being second fiddle to the Giants, who have been there since 1925, and have 3 Super Bowls to their credit. The Jets really need to shut up and stay down, because they got bombed in their 2 AFC championship apperences, not to mention the fact that they are acting like media whores all the time.

Honestly if that's the best Jets can do, I don't know what to say. Frankly they're like the Mets, they boast but in the end...

Let's face it, other than the 1969 SB Team, and last year when they beat Indy and New England, {which were very fluky wins.} They have very little stature among the elite teams in terms of titles, HOFs and even in playoff apperences. The Jets can't seem to understand their place in New York sports, which goes like this {in respective order}

Yankees
Giants
Knicks
Rangers
Jets
Any New Jersey Team
Mets
Islanders

WTF Tennessee?, picking Jake Locker with the 8th pick over Blaine Gabbert. I don't know what is going through their minds when they selected him, especially when Locker is a developmental QB at best and other than his senior season, he has been a rather shitty QB for Washington. I viewed Locker as a late first round to a mid second round QB at best, compared to Gabbert.

Also Minnesota really had a stretch to get Christian Ponder, but I can understand why would they pick him so high, considering Ponder is a decent QB, and I'm sure they want to get rid of Brett Farve that badly. I do like Ponder much better than Locker to begin with, even though he doesn't have very much arm strength. Since Ponder is gone, I'm hoping that Cincinnati really does consider getting Ryan Mallett in the 2nd round, in case Carson decides to leave.

yeah, bills can even afford to take mallett/dalton if they wanted to develop them behind fitzpatrick now, or just take bowers. they've done well even if it was just a case of taking BPA

lol pretty much everyone in the first round. panthers, falcons, vikings, titans, saints, so much fail

Panthers had to take Cam Newton, because Jimmy Clausen isn't that good of a QB, much less the team around it. Sam Bradford he is not, but with Newton, they may double their win total next season.

As for the Falcons, they had to give up a lot of picks to get Julio Jones, although you could say that they don't really have a lot of needs at this point. They can always find a decent CB or TE in the later rounds.

The Vikings really did surprise me when they drafted Ponder so early. I like Ponder and all, but he needs some time to develop, and I don't trust Joe Webb very much at the QB position. I guess they wanted to get rid of Farve that badly.

The Titans may have made the most idiotic move in recent draft history by drafting Jake Locker with the 8th pick. By drafting Locker, the Titans have more or less assured themselves that they will be drafting in the top 5 next year, because Locker hasn't been a winner at Washington, and he'll be a bust for the Titans. Don't know why they got rid of Vince Young in the first place.

The Saints could've used their pick to get a strong defensive player, mostly because their defense was abysmal at times, {most notably their chokejob against 7-9 Seattle.} Although Mark Ingram isn't really a bad choice to replace either Thomas or Ivory in the backfield with Reggie Bush.

And of course the Browns pick a DT instead of a badly needed WR, which clearly proves that they can't draft anyone good outside of the O-line, or they're just that fucking dumb when it comes to drafting.

just take aj green and then pick up vince/garrard/kolb/anyone in free agency. or run with clausen for another year. or trade down. no need to spew on someone that doesn't project to be a good NFL quarterback. take the stud wr and then get luck next year if needed (see also the johnson, calvin method)

a bad trade because they lack "needs" is still a bad trade. they've gambled the whole future of the franchise on winning right now, and the addition of Jones really doesn't make them a huge favourite to finish above the Saints

value based drafting 101 - if they see that there's a big drop off from taylor to wilkerson or whoever they see the next best DT is, then they take him, as there'll be less of a drop from baldwin to whoever they can get at 38

I like Fitzpatrick but I do understand the argument for a new QB. My only issue is that the Buffalo organization has proven time and time again that if the QB plays even one bad game they just abort mission and send in the 2nd string. Flip Flopping like that really screwed us over and when we finally stopped and gave Fitzpatrick some breathing room he had time to grow and excel. I think Fitzpatrick can take us into the playoffs but that doesn't mean that the Bills can't add some depth with a second round QB.

I for one like Colin Kaepernick, Andy Dalton, or Ryan Mallet. All look like potentially great players and with what we have now we can start laying the foundation for a real powerhouse team.
