MTL losing 3-0 to BUF is a shame but i like Buffalo. I feel their rebuilding after losing Briere and Drury.
It's not as much rebuilding as their team is just underperforming this year offensively. Vanek had 43 goals last year, he has 6 through 21 games this year; Derek Roy had 63 points in 75 games last year, he has 17 in 21 this year; Connolly is on and off with injuries so his effectiveness is limited; Stafford and Paille are getting their first full seasons and are having trouble capturing lightning in a bottle like they did when they got playing time late last season; Afinogenov had 61 points in 53 games last year, and has just 8 in 21 games this year, playing on the 3rd and 4th lines; Pominville had 34 goals and 68 points last year, and has 5 and 15 so far, respectively; Kotalik is just not the player he was 2 seasons ago, and that's why he plays regularly on the 4th line; Adam Mair is not rallying his team with fights like he used to last year (128 PIMs last season, 13 this season), and the same with Andrew Peters (151, 100 and 125 PIMs the last three years with the Sabres, just 11 so far this year), and they don't have the leadership on defense of Teppo Numminen and Dmitri Kalinin, their two seasoned vets.
So i'd say it's a combination of offensive underperformance and lack of leadership for the young guys. The chemistry just isn't there without Danielle Briere and Chris Drury starting things, but I suppose that was to be expected; however, I wouldn't have thought it to this extent.
But with the Sens in your division, how much could you have expected this year, anyway? They look like the favorites to win the Stanley Cup thus far, imo, although it's very early.
