It expresses how the mass populace suppresses individuality; I would not say that it was over done or over exaggerated they just did not sugar coat it. It can really feel that way, pins and needles, if you do one little thing out of sync with everyone else, I mean this outside of the “popular” and “unpopular” groups. This happens in everyday life of people of all age’s - group or no group.
The sex, it is not meaningless it is a huge part of society, our society is wrapped around sex it controls society in a way. It is also a way of blocking out everything else. The scene also expresses the fact that they did not think twice about treating someone like that; that they just went on with their everyday lives.
