Automated Collections- Suggestions?

For some time now, inbetween other stuff, I've been working on automating the collections. This will make Tom and Wade's lives a lot easier when trying to cull decent content from the Portal and categorising them into the collections area. I've not thought a great deal about the front end stuff, but here's what will probably happen.

For content that has passed judgement and is not part of a collection, there will be a reasonably big link, which says something like, "Recommend for collection." When you click this link, users will be able to choose from a list of collections that they think the submission should belong in. For people like the Iloveegg guy, it may automatically suggest that the submission belongs in one of the existing collections/series. So, say he brings out I love Egg episode 10, it will suggest that the submission belongs in the I love egg series.

There will still be a link for movies that are already in collections, just in case the submission is applicable to other collections than the one that it's already in.

Once submissions have received a significant amount of suggestions for particular collections, they will be pulled into a pool where Tom and Wade can review whether or not the submissions do actually belong in the collections that have been suggested. If they do, then Tom/Wade will have a simple tool to transfer those submissions into the collections area (at the moment, all of this is done by user recommendations via e-mail/submissions that we notice and the files are hand-edited).

There's a lot of backend stuff that I'm not going to go into and I've probably missed out some of the functionality that's already been discussed between Tom/Wade and I in this thread, but has anyone any suggestions as to any other functionality you'd like to see? Now's a good time to mention it, if so. This is still all a long way off yet, just thought I'd get some ideas together now while I'm prepping everything. :)

hmmmm that's a hard one. The system you are working on right now seems pretty good.

Maybe just build some thing that would enable certain authors to put the flashes in collections themselves.

Something like:

Dave (creator of RAB) enters the information for his new submission, RAB 6 Then, there is a special box somewhere that reads something like " due to the precedent quality of your works, the administrations has granted you the priviledge to enter you new submission into matching collections. This will be done antomatically so don't abuse it or the priviledge will be revoked. If you don't want your submission to go directly into the matching collections you can check the box bellow ( and there would be a little box that would read like " no, I do not want my work to be added instantly to any collection".

And then they could check some boxes ( one for each collection) I guess.

That could probably cut some of the work, but there might be too few authors would could use this for you to trouble yourself with that kind of system.

Otherwise your suggested system seems good. :)

I want numbers! 50 suggestions? 100? 200?

And who is going to set the suggestions?

My guess is many movies will go under the "Misc" category.

Response to Automated Collections- Suggestions? 2003-09-18 19:15:14

Yes, A very large number of movies will go under misc. because some of the movies who make it out are just plain out there.. Don't know why they made it or where it came from.. so maybe their will have to be a certain rule to being in misc. category or it will overflow..

Response to Automated Collections- Suggestions? 2003-09-18 19:16:58

there should be a pube muppet collection

Response to Automated Collections- Suggestions? 2003-09-18 19:21:07

the reputable artist with many movies should have there own sections, all the movies about a certain "whatever" should have their own topic ex: DBZ even though they suck. Then there could just be movie store categories: Musical, Comedy, Action, Horror/violent, and then VG parodies, Games, and Misc... thqats all i can think of.....

This sounds like a good idea. If it is possible and doesn't stress the server I think it should be implemented, because it sounds like you know what you're doing. As long as it isn't too automated it probably would function correctly. (100% Automation= total mayhem as demonstraighted in Terminator)

Yeah, I think that's something that Tom wanted putting in. :) I've added it to my notes, anyway.

Probably around 10. Maybe less. They will probably be ordered in order of how many suggestions there are descending. Something I will worry about later.

And who is going to set the suggestions?

The users! Did you read my post? The collections will all be suggested by users.

My guess is many movies will go under the "Misc" category.

There will probably be an optional category, other than the set ones, where people can suggest a title for a new collection.

I think we discussed having all reputable artists having their own static section anyway. :)

Sounds good so far. Been waiting for this forever =) .

Only thing I can think of is where the link might be. Under the vote panel, same width?
Shouldn't be under the reviews or "Other submissions by" .
Do many people even use the "TELL A FRIEND!" linky?

Anywho, can't wait for it to come up, next year at latest?

I'm not sure at this point. That's cosmetic and I will leave it to Tom. Wherever I put it, he could move it to somewhere else. :)

Not sure. Several thousand do per day from the movie window.

I'm hoping to get all of this done by the close of the year, or sooner. But other projects might stop me from completing in that time period. We'll see. :)

Hmm.. i never knew how exactly they got into the catagories.. Tom and wade manually put them in? Do they go through a lot of non famouse movies or what? Cause i thought only movies with awards went into the sections.
I do think its a good idea, but i think it will be abused. Stupid people trying to be funny will put movies into nonsense catagories and all. I know like you said someone will still have to check and see if they belong there.. but people will still do it. eh just a though.

I think its implied that they'd track the users like for the whistle levels.

I swear every time something new comes up, there's always that handful saying there's going to be some form of abuse. Like Wade trying to promote stickers " omg wade you crook stop trying to make money off us".

Maybe it could be set up that users of a high lvl or that have a reputation for the flash skills are set up as a kind of pannel that vote on if it should be put in and it would take x amount of votes for the submission to be moved there.

Response to Automated Collections- Suggestions? 2003-09-18 22:21:13

I like the idea.

I would definitely like it to be only 8 or so votes needed, that way smaller things can get into collections, not just popular top 50 stuffs.

Oh belive you me, I have some suggestions for you, but I don't think it's anything that you would want to hear, so I'll keep them to myself.....well except for one....When filling in cracks in walls and floors.....don't use caulk...I know this girl that did that once, and then she painted over it, and when you touched the wall it felt like rubber....lol

I love you guys

Response to Automated Collections- Suggestions? 2003-09-18 23:02:47

That would be an absolute jizzoriffic idea, I would love to be able to add my stuff to collections myself without having to bother the fulps.

One question though:

would the artist choose their own little 40x40 pic to go with it? what about the front page collections? like if you click "games" up at the top for example. You'll see the subcategories of "adventure, action, fighting, etc."

Each category has four or six showcased movies. How would those be affected

newgrounds needs to more volunteer driven imho. I'm not sure I like the idea of the increased automation here. Take on more unpaid staff. Like how you have moderators and chat ops now, I'd argue that they would be considered unpaid staff. But they I am stupid and know nothing of how this site really works. My 'helpful' comments are probably just annoying.

oh wow way to fuck up a post.
*But then I am stupid and know nothing of how this site really works.

and yeah well actually, the thing is, while I don't really like all this automation, I actually think the automated collections bit could work.

They're actually 50*50, I believe, but to answer this and the comments made by MagicalMusical____ further down, it's possible that help will be enlisted by some of the fans to take screenshots of these movies and put those images in - and perhaps even assign collections themselves.

They will be added to. It's possible that if the collections get so big, some sort of pagination will be used.

yeh, i agree with some people, you cant leave it down to ng users to choose where it goes, people can group up and send stickmen movies to the clock section. just form a team of collection mods, 4-5 of them, who can scan about and move X to Y

I've already said that the suggestions will go into a pool, where Tom/Wade can decide whether or not the submission does ultimately go into the collection. :)

why tom and wade though, why not some collection mods. i mean there may be movies, that tom/wade dont like, but may be great to a large majority of people.

Read my post one up from your initial post. I stated there that it's possible that along the line we'll enlist further help from users.

That's an interesting idea, having "collection mods," that have the ability to put movies right into collections.

Where they are appointed not by level or posts but by flash work.

Say I was a collection mod or something. Sure, I could add my own movies and stuff, but if a brand new author submits something that is absolutely kick ass I could add it for them. You could list all of the mod's emails on a page for regular users to contact

IT'S GENIOUS!!!!

At 9/19/03 03:12 PM, Magna wrote: However, i don't think the link should be visible if the movie/games score is under 3.5, or somewhere around there...

Tom suggested that we have a list of movies scoring 3.0+ that are not already in a collections page or x amount of views that are not already in a collections page, so the decent scoring and most popular submissions should automatically come to our attention anyway.

think about it. How many people do you have on your Buddy List? You could EASILY get 10 people to click that suggestion link. And that would pretty much piss Tom (or the 'collection mods') off if he gets a movie/game suggested to him that is a POS.

I wouldn't worry about that too much. I can always up the amount of suggestions required before they show up in the links. And the suggestions will be cleared if they're inappropriate anyway.

Plus, look at the 'funny cartoons' collection...

MOST of the good entries submitted belong in the 'funny cartoons' collection. That page would be chockfull.

Possibly - although it's possible that this will fall under heavier categorisation or have some sort of pagination.

Also, i dont think it would be good if one entry could be in more than 2 collections.

Hrm. Maybe. We'll see how things pan out with that one when the time comes.
