Wow, your dedicated to this.

Btw, how did you do yours so it doesnt lag? With mine I couldnt think of a better method than several for loops (row, column, bullets and baddies - the last 2 inside the row and colum ones) and has become very laggy.

I'm not as dedicated to the actual contest as to the idea behind it :P

I base my game on functions. On each frame, your actions (i.e. key presses) are taken into consideration, then a drawField function is called. This one looks somewhat like this:

playingField = emptyField; (playingField is the text field variable; this basically clears the text field)
drawPlayer();
moveBullets();
moveEnemies();
drawBonuses();

It's not entirely semantic since moveBullets and moveEnemies also "draws" to the text field, but what the heck. There's much more to it, but I can't explain my whole engine, now can I? ;)

I see. When I came up with it I became very eager to make a game of it myself.

Oh, I see, thats a much better method. I'm gunna steal it :P

Probably not going to be able to submit the game by tomorrow. I'll be back home by Monday or possibly Sunday evening. Either you can push the deadline until then or you can just disqualify me ;)

I'll push the deadline back to thursday, looks like its only me and you entering, so I cant disquialify you.

Its really frustrating, seeing as this competion had loads of potential.

One week deadline, last weeks of the academic year...

And you seem to have failed at the deadline yourself. I'm disappointed.

But yeah, I expected more participants regardless.

Very cool idea! Sadly I not only found about it late, but I'm also uber-busy right now :-(
A flash remake of ZZT would be cool :-)

I had this awesome idea of making a BASIC interpreter for Flash... so you type your program in the SWF and then can run it...

Then I remembered old things like the STOS and AMOS (the forebears of Klik n' Play and Games Factory), and how it would be cool to have a Flash BASIC to make games on the browser...

Then I went to my bookshelf to get my old copy of 'Principles of Compiler Design' to see what is needed to write a parser, and the other stuff to make a BASIC thingy...

Then I realized the massive work this would represent and thought maybe it's not such a good idea after all... :-P

What do you think?
I doubt anybody is as mad as I am about these retro things though. :-)

I'm really, really, really sorry about this. It kinda dragged to a stop, with only rantzy keeping it alive. Nearly everyone was too busy for it, everyone was like 'OMG super idea trig, but i gots no spare time lol'.

Rantzien wins completely. WOOO!!!!!!

I'm sorry people about my complete lack of organisation :(

Response to AS Competion: Textbox 2007-07-10 14:11:29

Yay :)

Here's my entry. It has two types of enemies and four types of bonuses. It's not by any means a complete game, but hey.
