Report Card for the go home edition of ECW On SciFi for 11/21
This show was all about pushing the PPV. Which I thought would mean a lot of gaga, little wrestling, and just quickly throwing the show together. When I saw Paul Heyman's opening segment, and then the actual card for the night, I realized we were basically just going to get a push for what's announced, and the rest would probably just be thrown together as the show happened, which is probably the best thing they can do to push it at this point. Beyond the two announced matches, I can't see them having anything else without wildly taking people from RAW and SD! to make people buy this show. Also, there will be a new section where I will recommend or not if a match is worth downloading off the Hardcore Hangover option on ECW.com. Let's get to it:
Paul Heyman opener: Man, did you get the fact that they are desperately trying to sell the Chamber? The weapons were very interesting, and I fully expect Sabu and RVD to come up with some sick way to break that table, and dent that chair. I'm really looking forward to the Chamber just because when you take Show and Test out of the equation, you have some really good (Lashley, RVD) to fantastic (Sabu, CM Punk) workers in this thing, and I think everybody is gonna bust their ass to make that match work. A pretty nice segment to open the show and hype the chamber. Grade: B
RVD over Sabu via pinfall: I drooled when they announced this...I mean...how much more classic ECW can you get then RVD and Sabu going at it? I really liked that they started off slow and traded punches, and for the most part, the spots were dead on. There were some ugly one's like they're mid-air collision, but all in all I liked what I saw, and I can't really get mad at WWE for making this one open the show, RVD and Sabu could have been in a position for that to be a match that would headline the show, but they've screwed that up themselves. I also liked that they had both men cutting a video promo before the match to put over how far they'll go to win the ECW title, it makes the belt important, which should absolutely be the focus always, but especially now. If you don't believe as a fan the ECW title is worth winning, you won't want to pay money to see guys kill themselves trying. Matches like this are the things I point to when people ask why I'm still sticking with the new ECW. Grade: A. Should you Hangover it?: Absolutely.
Hardy Boyz over Burke and Terkay: I'm sure the Hardys are loving their reunion tour here but uh...why? Aren't we just overexposing this now and making people who aren't diehard Hardy marks watch? I love MNM, but I'm not sure that sells the average fan on the show. That said though, I'm happy to see Burke and Terkay teaming here, I really like the idea of them used as a team (especially because I think ECW could absolutely benefit from a tag team division at this point), but I certainly question feeding them to the Hardys in their ECW debut. That said, it wasn't a squash, and Burkay (it's easier then saying their names seperate) got some pretty good moves in, but again, I would have protected Turkay at the least and kept the aura of monstrousness on him. The post-match beatdown by MNM may have been predictable, but sometimes the simple stuff works. Grade: B+, Should I Hangover it?: Not unless you're a big Hardys mark, since the beatdown will be recapped on the PPV, and the match itself was only average.
CM Punk over Test via submission: Well, here's my pick for the man who should win the Extreme Elimination Chamber. Mr. CM Punk, I've dreamed it, and I'm almost never wrong on this, not to mention I just feel like Punk is the guy the brand needs to carry it right now, no offense to Lashley, but I'm not sure a guy who just transferred in should be given the big ball right away, build up to the showdown of Punk vs. Lashley. Anyway, let's talk about the match itself. Started off slow because...well...that's about Test's speed. Lots of power spots, until Punk began to come back, good back and forth, I really like that Punk's matches are becoming more competitive lately, a CM Punk squash is still fun to watch, but I like the idea (especially since I fully endorse him as the next ECW Champ) that he's having some more competitive matches. The finish may not have been the most fun, but it dosen't matter because it did what it needed to, it showed that CM Punk just wants to fight, and dosen't care about the outcome. Grade: B- Should I hangover it?: Are you someone who wants to say you've seen every CM Punk match ever broadcast? If yes, then Hangover it. If not, skip this, as it was average, but nothing I think anyone should be going out of they're way to see.
Lashley over Big Show via DQ: I was really impressed to see how well Show was moving around here, I do not give a crap if you like this man or not, he is being a soldier right now, and I really hope tonight's performance was sign that with his schedule being lightened, Show is getting healthier. These two did some big man power spots, Show dominating Lashley at first, then Lashley coming back. The suplex spot was a pretty cool way to show Lashley's power, but when we've seen Show thrown from the top by Lesnar, not quite as good. Then the goons hit the ring to assault Lashley. Really didn't get anything going here, the point was just to set up Lashley as being "hurting" going into Sunday. Grade: C+ Should I Hangover?: Nah, they'll have the relevant parts in the opening PPV package, there's nothing here you really need to see.
Overall: Decent show that pushed the PPV, but I don't know if it's going to convince anyone they really need to tune in this Sunday, but I think they did their best on that score. Only one match worth watching after the fact, which isn't really great, but like I say, I think this one really has to be graded on how much they did for the PPV, and they pushed the crap out of the main event, and tried to get some heat on the Hardys and MNM's match too. Overall Grade: B
Enjoyable, but nothing to write home about.
