Dear Professor Aview,
Why haven't you answered our previous letters? And furthermore, whats your favorite match of all time in your opinion? Do you have different types like, "favorite wrestling match' and "favorite brawler match"?
I haven't been quick to answer because I have a full-time job, a website to run, and I had to make a trip to the bank today to buy a new car. I will try to answer every letter you guys put out, but it's going to take some time as I'm a very busy guy, and some days are going to be better then others. Just bear with me : ).
As far as a favorite match, yeah, that's very hard to call, as I think if you're watching two or more guys who know what they're doing in the particular style their working, they can really make you love it. I've always been very partial to tag team match ups (and that's one of the reasons why the abysmal tag division of late has been). So maybe we should break it down in terms of style of match, and what my favorites are that way:
Favorite Series: RVD/Jerry Lynn. I HATED RVD when this was going on, mostly because I was dumb and didn't understand how truly good RVD was, and thought he was overexposed, but I absolutely loved what he and Lynn were doing here, just about every match in this series is a classic bout, and they really did manage to deliver intensity, and tell an incredible story, without huge amounts of buildup, or the need for an "I hate your guts because of this" type storyline. Just pure work ethic there.
Favorite tag team match: Mikey Whipwreck and Tajiri vs. The FBI, absolutely everything in this feud was incredible, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I think they're bout from The Massacre on 34th Street PPV was truly great, they did so much high flying, false finishes, they really elevated in my mind what Tag wrestling could be, and that one WASN'T EVEN FOR THE BELTS! This was just to determine a number 1 contender, just an incredible bout that was only enhanced by the fact that they weren't fighting FOR the titles, they were simply fighting for a SHOT at them, hell, I think they had a better bout there then the actual tag title match later on in the show.
Favorite Brawl: Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack, ECW Arena, first ECW bout between the two. This one TORE the house down! Almost literally, Funk and Jack made you believe they truly hated each other, they fought all around the ring for the first twenty minutes or so, and just hit each other with anything and everything they could find, it wasn't just hardcore for hardcore's sake, this was a story about two men who hated each other, and were willing to take it to another level, add in interference from Douglas and The Sandman, who were also involved in the feud, and you had a wild wild match, which saw Jack get the win, but Funk burning him after with the flaming branding iron. It's a wild brawl, that when you talk about suspending disbelief, and telling a great story, this one did that and then some. What everyone who wants to look at how to tell a story while using everything but the kitchen sink should be watching.
