The setting, characters, music are all suited more to an English dub. Same with shows like Baccano or Monster where the setting is western and having all the characters speaking Japanese is weird.
Also, the person who helped composed the tracks for the series actually prefer the English dub as well. Must have done something right to warrant that at least.
I think the issue is that aside from people being too overzealous on the Japanese version, there's also the fact that the dubs back in the days sucked.
This can really leave a bad taste in any anime fans' mouths.
