I have some important news.

You may never be able to read certain manga titles again...

I personally hate those sites anyway, but there are some people on here whom this would affect greatly.

I don't like reading comics on the computer.

But honestly, I don't give a shit about stealing comics when I live in New Zealand. The prices are ridiculous.

I'll look on the back of a manga and it will say that it cost $7 in America, but its price is like $35 in New Zealand.

And I'm not paying $35 for something I'll read in an hour and never read again.

However, I use the library where possible.

Me neither. I hate having to scroll around to be able to read the text.

It's actually closer to $20, which is part of why my manga collection is so small.

You're lucky if your local libraries even carry the stuff anymore. There have been crusades in several countries (e.g. the US and UK) to get manga out of public libraries and keep it out (and to make matters worse, my MOTHER was a part of this movement).

I've been doing it for years now. I did it at first because I hated waiting through Anime Filler and just wanted to get back to the series. So I looked online and began reading manga online. It took a while to get used to it and even forgot to read it right to left a few times.

However, I've become so accustomed to it know I can't imagine doing it differently.

I can never read mangas properly. I always seem to read ones that take liberal use of borders, so I have no idea what order I'm supposed to read anything. ugh

Okay what?

What's their rationale for this?

I would think it's probably some Reactionary Extremism at work. Hyper conservatives who see manga for nothing but the fanservice and think it's some kind of hypersexualized poison and not suited to be in a place of learning.

That's it in a nutshell.
Unfortunately, these "hyperconservatives" are everywhere (at least where I live) and are extremely powerful. Anyone remember the 1999 Toys 'R Us lawsuit? The plaintiff was a stereotypical Dallas conservative. He won the case, and ever since more and more of his kind have popped out of the woodwork and have continued to bash, deride and attempt to destroy the Western manga industry. Even 4Kids CEO Al Kahn is one of them (surprise surprise). They're like cockroaches: they're everywhere, they spread filth wherever they go and it's nearly impossible to get rid of them.

Okay I originally mentioned in the PS3 Online Lounge, but I thought I'd mention it here for those who are fans of Hokuto no Ken or want to get into it (but don't want their eyes to bleed from the extremely dated animation as the series originally aired ages ago) and have a PS3. I didn't mind HnK's dated animation, although at some points in the series I thought I got stoned off of my ass somehow without the use of any substances because the moment was so freaking trippy looking (I refer MAINLY to Toki's first use of Hokuto Ujou Hagan Ken as one of those "trippy moments").

That last sentence was a tidbit off topic, but ANYWAYS, Koei gave Hokuto no Ken the same treatment that Gundam got and gave it a Dynasty Warriors game called Hokuto Musou. BUT WAIT, the game has absolutely astounding graphics and gameplay that are far beyond the bar set by previous Dynasty/Samurai Warriors games. Not only that, but the game also covers the entire Hokuto no Ken story. You get to beat the living shit out of thousands of enemies as HnK characters AND you get the whole story without having to watch the series. Players in Japan LOVED it and there's so much demand for the game internationally that Koei has set a US release date for August (I didn't double check on an EU release date yet).

Now the US and EU localizations of Hokuto Musou will have the same Japanese voice actors (thankfully Koei decided not to hire mediocre VAs to dub the characters this time) or at the most give an option to use English or Japanese voiceovers (like they did with Dynasty Warriors Gundam). So far from what I know it's a PS3 exclusive and there won't be any ports (sorry 360, Wii, and PC folks).

So if you have a PS3 and you want to get into Hokuto no Ken but don't feel like watching the 103 episode series (though I encourage it because it's a heck of a cult classic), Hokuto Musou is your game to check out. It's already out in Japan, but unless you understand Japanese and don't mind reading it, it's better just to wait another 2 months for the US release and buy it if you're in the US and import it if you're in the EU region and you don't feel like waiting any longer.

Speaking of Hokuto no Ken, I think I might rewatch that series again. I wonder if any vendors at Otakon will have a box set or something...

I don't know if it's relevant to any of you but today the final chapter of FMA was released on Onemanga.

It's 111 pages long

It's a nice end to the series

At 6/10/10 08:25 PM, Mendou wrote: I'm quite excited that it's being released again, I've only seen the movie, but I'm really looking forward to watching the original series.

The game also looks amazing, you can bet I'll be picking it up.

Definitely. Like I said due to it's age, there are some points where the animation does things that make you think you're tripping balls. For instance Toki's first use of Hokuto Ujou Hagan Ken. The screen just flashes like crazy as Toki makes a retarded facial expression like he just let out a fart that was trapped deep within his body for centuries and then the camera pans to the two soldiers staring away at him like "8O" and then Toki holds his hands up with a calm, straight face as the back ground has a 3 color pattern that's constantly changing over and over again. So basically Toki is meditating with his hands held up like he wants to hold hands with you in front of a rainbow-like background which leads people to believe he's an asian Jesus (which is later speculated to be true).

Nevertheless the series was an absolutely great watch. On topic of the game, I'm in same boat as you. I was about to import it but then I found out about the US release date and I was like "Chyeahhh." Ah it's going to be one hell of a game. :D

Awesome, I haven't watched Hnk in a long time, and I didn't particularly cared for the Streamline dub that I watched last time.

As for the game, It sucks that it's a PS3 exclusive in the US, considering I have a 360. And speaking of the 360, why are their no anime games for the 360, {besides Naruto and Gundam}? I know the 360 is an American game system, but still, we need some anime games for the 360, a general change of pace from a marathon of playing GOW and SSF4.

HEY JOSH.

YOU SHOULD READ MONSTER INSTEAD OF WATCHING IT OK.

There is a lot less filler but that is typical with most manga/anime series. I think the anime is 70+ episodes where as the manga is under 20 volumes. Fantastic series that you should give a go be it anime or manga. It's one of those that you'll either enjoy it and get sucked in or dislike it, picking it up years later to try and give it another go.

Like candy corn. No matter how many times I try that garbage it STILL tastes like garbage.

I can recall how long it took me to actually complete the series due to no one compensating for the supply/demand feed down at Waldon Books in the ATL area. Shit took almost a year and a half.

I just checked out the first episode of Ouran High School Host Club.

It was adorable, and reasonably funny. I'm not sure how it's going to keep it up, though.

I'm guessing it's supposed to be some sort of parody of shoujo or something? I've only really encountered those tropes in parodies, though, since I don't read or watch shoujo manga.

Yeah, but they really fucked up the ending theme song in the dub. I always wondered why they would bother changing it in the first place, since pretty much every other dub leaves the intro and endings the same as they were in the original Japanese version.

Oh well, it's doesn't really matter much to me since I usually skip over them.

Spoilers for the first episode, but it's about a middle class girl who gets to go to an expensive private school, but by accident gets into debt with a host club (a club where handsome men drink and talk with girls), and is also mistaken for a boy. By the end of the first episode, she's made into a host too, her true gender kept secret by the club.

Hilarity ensues, as you might guess.
