Patlabor is cool, part cop-drama, part raging awesome mech show.

The movies are just dandy as well.

Halfway through HnK 2. It's basically becoming more and more like DBZ (WTF energy attacks?) But it's still got that raging awesome qulity to it, like the original series had.

Hnk has always had something about it that made it awesome like the extreme violence and interesting characters even the villains that only last about 5 minutes were atleast somewhat inereting an example is Mr. Heart an extremely obese man who uses his fat as the perfect defense and offence with the interesting phobia of blood that can turn him completely berserk.

I don't know about your personal tastes, of course, but all I would ever think about is how many diseases would be on a sack of germs like a sick person.

They might have diseases and have no symptoms, or just be a carrier. Blurgh.

I have nothing to say that is at all relevant.

I'm hoping the wise Anime guru's here can help me out. I'm a man who likes to watch some good quality anime on his free time, and time has become a fleeting commodity. I no longer have the desire to randomly download series and watch like I used to.

SO I need your help. Can anybody suggest some soul crushingly depressing anime? Series like GunGrave and Last Exile had my tear glands checking in for over time, and I absolutely adored these series. Noble causes, epic deaths, things of that nature.

Please and thank you, thanks for your time!

Urgh.

I really don't support describing series as 'depressing'.

It ruins it to some degree.

Much agreed.

I derive zero entertainment out of being depressed. Moved or provoked to think? Okay. Depressed? Absolutely not.

Calling something depressing is scarcely a comment and anyone who must seek out such entertainment is deranged.

I fear you have taken the literal meaning of the word to degrees not at all intended. Grave of the Fire Flies i've seen, as I have Now and then, Here and there. Agreed, both were brilliant. Depressing crosses over to tragic, heart wrenching, moving, etc. All of these terms have few attributes in common, which "Depressing" afflicts to.

I remember a few series which broke my heart, like Saikano, and another I forgot the name where the main character falls utterly in love with somebody, and she gets killed in an accident. It... was nothing short of depressing watching him fall apart. That description is mad generic sounding, but i'm not going to go in depth for a series i've already watched, and have no interest in seeking again.

Now lets not get into a philosophical debate over this. I'm not looking to win anything, just looking for advice.

X TV is a wonderful example of the kind of series i'm looking for. The music, the story, the action. Ace all around (and the artwork and animation are still some of the best i've seen despite it's creation being 1998, really REALLY recommend it to anybody who has not had the

Pretentious cuntybollocks, the word is not nearly that broad.

Goddamned internet kids and their semantics.

It's very possible to be driven to tears or moved, but not depressed. Bad choice of words is bad.

YOU FUCKERS JUST NEED TO WATCH HAPPY SHIT

Saikano

Infinitely too grim to even bother caring about.

That wasn't really my point.

I just generally hate people saying anything about a series that could spoil it.

Saying something is 'depressing' when regarding a series, usually means that somebody dies, and that that person was likable enough to depress the person with their death. Knowing that hinders my enjoyment of a series, because I keep on thinking "oh man, who's going to be the one to die?"

But no, I don't seek out series to be depressed either.

not at all! But are you going to tell me that every new series that comes out nowadays doesn't try to garner more attention by showcasing "NEW ANIMATION TECHNOLOGY LULZ!"

And lets face it, a lot of anime viewers use visuals as a big factor in what they will watch next. It seems every new trailer for anything will have one of few things

1: Super slick 3D cell shaded city landscape, hero/heroine tutelly standing on some high perch, looking cool like they do on their Friday nights.
2: Smooth and super refined animation (aimed more at the romance/school/young audience)
3: Things blowing up on a scale that impresses Jesus... shiny effects and computer aided animations rampant.

X TV, a time where such technology was not so widely used, and the differences show. Some really beautiful work.

I know I do.

But I'm more in the habit of basing it off of the direction, rather than the animation quality.

I'd prefer something cinematically directed, than something 'well' animated.

I hate to use Cowboy Bebop as a basis for an argument again, but still.

Of course it's not fair to say all new series which uses this technology sucks. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, to name a few, brilliant.

Not to get too sidetracked, i'd still love to hear some recommendations. Series i've watched already that fit the bill

Now and then, Here and There
Grave of the Fireflies
Full Metal Alchemist *who hasn't seen this one?*
GunGrave
Trigun
Saikano
12 Kingdoms *though not mad depressing it had some really really moving moments*
DNAngel *first series I watched*
X TV
Honey and Clover
Monster *dragged on too long, but the ending 20 episodes were epic win*
Gunslinger Girl

a few others, but they elude me now.

You win for this anime. Johan is one of the greatest villains ever. I love the "showdown" between Dr. Tenma and him.
