Oh joy, more elitist ranting....fun.
Elitist? It's my own moral opinion, not a hard-known fact.
You expect an explanation? Sure, you'll get one.
Too much /m/ is similar to the point of ridiculousness, it's an undeniable fact.
Which is why I do have less expressed breaks in between like reading romance/comedy (e.g. Futari Ecchi or Midori no Hibi) or the occasional slices of life (e.g. Yotsuba& and Densha Otoko).
Even though you're a fan of the genre, I'm sure you've realized that there is a fair deal of generic, crappy, Mazinger/Gundam/Macros/etc-wannabe series.
Heh, looks like there really is something worth explaining after all.
Though hard to identify because I seem to 'specialise' in it, just because it's /m/ does not mean I worship it all like some religious cult.
There are a few mecha shows that I would not bother going through every episode of, mainly because the by-episode pattern is identical and has no redeeming qualities individually (particularly the Golden Age of Mecha in the 1970s). Unless they are particularly short and appealing like the MazinKaiser OVA (7 episodes + 1 movie-length), then I do not have to worry about wasting too much time on a series only to keep fast-forwarding to more interesting parts like the introduction of new secondary characters, new long-term weapons or a new enemy.
As for bad examples of Mecha, there's the infamous "Space Gundam V" by Korea a long time ago, which I only watch clips of just for laughs but never want to be exposed to for over five minutes.
...
So don't get the wrong idea of me. I am a big mecha fan, but I am not ignorant to other genre or titles worth watching.
I doubt every company has plans that elaborate.
I cannot think of other definite examples off the top of my head either, but I don't think it's too farfetched of a business plan either.
Most of this stuff exists to cash in on pre-existing material (Tenchi Muyo's million spin-offs, anyone?) or to make a quick buck (name any harem series made in the past five years).
With Evangelion toys, figures, games and artbooks coming as a close second or even first?
Plus, the mainstream acceptance of H doujinshi seems to be weakening, hence the (alleged) firing of Mizuno Makoto and deletion from record of the first manga adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (it is believed MM was doing Haruhi H on the side, so Kadokawa disowned and later scrapped records of the original series).
I see.
I guess they didn't like parallels to ruin their characters' image huh. Maybe the characters are even based on real-life characters but not implied or admitted?
I don't care what the purpose is, money-making does not guarantee quality or give a reason for a useless product's existence.
I never said it has to be of higher-tier or even acceptable quality, though it's not hard to believe that they are usually unpopular amount fans or collectors in general.
