I have not seen Perfect Blue yet, but id say Whisper of the heart is one of the best films iv ever seen. What do you think is the best Miyazaki film of the 80's?
Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
And Perfect Blue is a great film, but it's not exactly for everyone.
It's like the polar opposite of what Miyazaki makes.
But then again, I think that Satoshi Kon is a better director than Miyazaki, since his films seem to have more depth.
Miyazaki centres far too much on his environmentalist message; After Nausicaa I think we got the idea
And yes, Whisper of the Heart is an excellent film.

That redeems them slightlu.
Nazi's have become less cool over the years.
The four star system is much more efficient, leaves a lot less room for excuses and technicalities..
But then again, it still makes it harder to judge whether or not you are going to like a film before you see it.
Corpse Bride was a savage disappointment, not nearly enough songs.
I liked the Bonejangles song.
I'd have to say Mononoke gets this nod.
Mononoke is good, but it loses points for being too much like Nausicaa.
Fuck yes.
I was pleasantly surprised by Whisper of the Heart after most of the other non-Miyazaki ones sucked.
(The Cat Returns... *shudder*)
But now I've just remembered that Grave of the Fireflies was Ghibli too... So I'll take out that "by far".
