Well, I like endings where the group of main characters is still together and things are like they were before, wich is why I like the ending to Outlaw Star. I don't like the ending to Cowboy Bebop because....

Spike dies. He is just too cool.
I also think the ending to Rurouni Kenshin is decent because it implies Kenshin isn't going to wander anymore and he's staying with the group, so things are the same.
The same goes for the ending of Orphen. Everybody's together and they continue adventuring.
I don't think this way with all movies and shows, though. There are some where it's just better if the main character dies, or people drift apart, and so on.
It's not an anime, but Donnie Darko is a good example because Donnie died for the sake of other people. Lives were saved through his sacrifice at the end of the film.
