First of all, happy birthday. Secondly, Hellsing. I love that anime. Trigun is good, but Hellsing being shorter, is better for someone with less cash to spend. Both are definetly good, but I'd suggest Hellsing. If you do go with Trigun, for the love of God, don't watch it in English. The voices make my ears bleed in English.

Doujins are fan manga or independant manga.

Better known as "Doujinshi", given how better recognised it is in stores (Try saying "Doujin" to store staff in Japan and they might have trouble understanding your needs).

Ditto. I mean, I think it was pretty big a few years ago, but yeah, now it's all Pokemon, Naruto (although I do like the show) all that. Inuyasha can pretty much only be found on DVD in some small places or on Adult Swim
