That's a pretty silly conclusion. If your point is that since the red apple reflects red light, it isn't red, then you're thinking about why we call it red in the wrong way, the fact the it reflects that color of light back to us is the sole reason we call it that color....so if anything can be said for certain, it is that a red apple is definitely red, because the conditions for it being called a red apple are defined by humans.

If something reflects green light then it is green >.< Something which is black is actually the best at absorbing light.

This changes when you're talking about light itself, since a ray of green light is literally green. Apart from that, though, objects have their colours defined by what light they reflect or otherwise emit.

But yes, there's a lot of assumption and semantics behind most "regular human things". If you assume a human, and assume this magically defined criteria for what a human considers a color, then I guess an apple "is" red. A bee, for example, perceives light centered around an entirely different part of the spectrum, and wouldn't agree with our definition of "red".

I think the signal to noise ratio is pretty low for colloquial speak, but I'm not rallying against it or anything. It's a lot easier to say 'this apple is red' rather than 'this apple reflects light in the red part of the spectrum as observed by humans'. It's easier to say 'the sky is blue' rather than 'the sky appears blue because of atmospheric scattering'.

This is wrong because if you consider, say, an apple displayed on a monitor, you see that the monitor essentially generates the red light that we see--it doesn't really reflect anything. So a photograph of an apple displayed on a monitor probably might be considered to 'actually' be red because it 'actually' emits red light, but the actual apple in the photograph is just perceived as being red.

So you might say that things "are" a certain color if humans perceive them as being that color, but only under specific circumstances.

For example, if you had an apple sitting on the floor in a closed room, you would see it as red. If the lights were turned off, is it STILL a red apple? What would you say? Yes? No? Probably yes, because it has the 'potential' to be a red apple under normal lighting conditions. In fact, an apple in a completely dark room, when observed by a human, is completely invisible. Would you feel comfortable saying that objects in a room with no light sources are completely invisible (think about the word "invisible")? If the apple were placed under ultraviolet light only, it'd probably look blue--does that make the apple blue? Or is it still red because under "ordinary Sun circumstances" humans perceive it as being red?

Stick a solid red apple in a room with only green and blue lighting, and the apple will appear black because there's no red light to reflect towards your eyes.

But you can't say an apple is every color besides red, because we define color by what our eyes detect when we look at an object, not by what wavelengths of color an object absoebs (or in the case of a monitor, doesn't emit).

If by Modern history you are referring to the period just after the first world war upto the time of the gulf war, falklands etc. then yeh, i liked it anyways

I think I've seen every reg's grades at least 4 times. I'm thinking of starting an archive, so I can give you a pat on the back or a kick in the ass when I see your grades are going up or down.

I'm also glad that we have a different system here so I can't compare your grades to mine and feel miserable.

I can't even remember my GCSEs. I know I got a B in French. My best for AS was full marks in my Lit exams, which I was proper chuffed with since one was a resit and I was half blind with caffeine on the day I took them XD

I've seen Delta. I started it :P But only 'cause if I just said I'm aiming for a C in French then I sounded dumb. And now it has escalated..

I never understood why people feel the need to share grades and show everyone else what they got...granted, you all seem very intelligible and your grades clearly show that, but thats the type of stuff to share with your mummies so she can kiss your chubby cheeks and say what a good boy you are. By all means you should be proud of what you've accomplished, but in my opinion if you were really smart you might think about posting such information before you do.

I have a friend who wouldn't share his SAT (I dunno if you guys have this in Europe, but it's some big test thing that everyone takes here) scores even when everyone else around him was. No one asked why, but he just didn't and that was cool. He ended up at Harvard with probably had the best SAT scores out of my friends and easily could have bragged about it and showed them all up. But he didn't, and now he's at the most prestigious school in the United States. Just an example...

Of course, maybe I just think this way because I go to art school and obviously didn't get the best of the best of grades or I probably would have figured out another more promising career path. I'm drawing pictures all day though, and I couldn't be happier.

Yes, it would be. A whole lot of talk going no where... I think you understand what I mean, the word red was created by humans, so to say that a red apple isn't red, when what's red is defined as red by humans, is ridiculous. It's just a silly argument or point to make. No matter what circumstances make the apple appear different colors, or not appear at all, it's still a red apple, simply because through our perceptions, in our natural world, the color that apple is said to have, is red.

I've never been a big fan of the grades thing myself. Passing is passing. My grades are kind of like a shotgun blast on a bullseye. I'm usually absent from class more often than not. For instance, I have a Tuesday/Thursday class that has an attendance policy (most classes in the colleges I've been to don't care) which states that for every 5 absences, your final grade is dropped by one letter. I think I'm up to 9 in that class at the moment. There are around 30 class days, and we're maybe 2/3rds of the way through. I'm not sure where I stand in the class, because I've been absent on the days when assignments have been handed back, and I never bother to ask for them. So chances are, if I make an A, I'll make a C, you know?

I see a degree as a means to an end, nothing more. Same thing with High School. Grades, SATs, IQs, all of that stuff is mostly meaningless garbage to me. Some of the smartest people I know are degreeless, work at Pizza Hut and smoke weed for a living, and some of the "least intelligent" people I know are successful, top-level managers, CEOs, with masters etc who get paychecks the size of my car (but which are worth much more). Who would you rather be, and why? How much does your "10th grade trigonometry mark" contribute to either one?

For me, I've almost found a direct negative correlation between productivity, happiness etc, and grades. To be honest, though, I'm sure I'd be singing a different song if I didn't have to work my way through... I think my job has been the real buzzkill over the last decade, making it difficult to put forth effort in places where I know I can get away with slacking off hardcore (such as school).
