Optimizing AdSense
So recently we released the update of KungFuGaming.com, the site that me and two friends are running as a part of a school project. I'm a little bit disappointed in our incomes through the ads though, we only make a few cents a day and are up on $5 total. We are all very new to this though so we don't really know if we can't expect more considering the amount of traffic we have (since we released a game with our logo and links in it a week ago we've had about 1200-1400 visits every day), or if we may have done a poor job optimizing our ads. What do you guys think, I know many of you here have experience with this kind of stuff?
Also, the site is not completely finished as you can see, there's still a lot of polish needed as well as functions that needs to be coded. Never mind that now though, please just focus on the ads :P
Traffic. Not only will your clicks go up but your higher paying ads will follow. Your alexa is hitting in the high 5 millions, which means you need to bring a few more people to your site.
Hi there!

When i was concentrating my money making on Adsense, I'd go to school and click the ads i had, do it from home and MSN people. Of course Adsense caught on and warned me, but by then they had already sent me $210 and i was fine :D
The problem is that they probably discover it very fast, and then you might get kicked out before even getting any money.. And even if you do get the money it's probably better to spend your time to make games or something instead of clicking your own ads :P
I don't think there is a specific way of optimizing adsense, the only way i see people getting good clicks is sticking the adverts in a list and made to look like they belong there, for example in a list of games.
From what I've heard it should matter much where you put the ads on the site, along with some other things like how you color them and stuff like that. Much of this seems somewhat abstract and insignificant to me, but I guess it's not impossible that it makes difference.
Besides that, i can't think of anyway. Just try all the different ad companies and see which works best for your site. I can however say, don't plaster your sites with adverts, it's horrible :D
Yeah, we try to keep pretty low on ads, but it sure would be nice to see that they pay off. Nowadays it seems like most gaming sites throws a popup ad your way every time you go to a new page (I have a popup blocker, but many still gets through). They might pay well, but I hope that I will never get the idea to put them on the site as they ruins so much of the visitors experience.

Yeah, I figure that traffic has the biggest impact on incomes. Still, at this pace we would need a few thousands visitors a day for it to even cover the costs of the server :S

But do you really need a server? My website just has shared hosting at godaddy.com for about $13 a month, and that is 3 TB of traffic and 300 GB. Servers are fancy and all but it's nice to be hosted for a few bucks a month.

Sorry, that's what I meant :P
We use like a really cheap hosting service that covers our needs at least for now, the fact that it is so cheap makes it even more sad though as we have trouble covering it..

That's the main problem with people who say that getting games sponsored is cheating developers out of money and that you can earn more by linking you your own site. That's all well and good, but I'd rather my site wasn't a complete slag :P

All the ways I've seen to optimize adsence only work for article-based websites.
When the focus of your site is flash movies and games, "games" is a very low paying keyword, as is flash and most other entertainment based keywords.
I always see "look for high paying keywords", however the only way to get those high paying keywords would be to make your site into something about mortgages and loans, which removes the focus from your games or eliminates them all together.
Probably the best way would be to negotiate your own advertisement contracts when you get a lot of visitors. I get a huge CTR with image ads, but still a very low CPM. (My image ad CTR is like more than tenfold my text ad CPM, yet I get paid more per click on my text ads. It still works out to image ads making me about twice as much money).
I hate worrying about it though. It's a pain to deal with. You either keep your site a personal showcase of your work with minimal ads and earn enough to keep it up but not enough to pay any sort of living expenses, or you turn it into a business where you lose the personal feel of your site, and spend more time managing content from other people than creating your own.
What I hate is when I'm reading an article on a website and they split it up into several pages - as if my Firefox can't handle longer pages or something. These sites are usually the ones with ads plastered on each side of the article, at the top of the page, in the middle of the article and of course at least 1 popup.. I know you need to make money but I think user base should be more important and that sort of advertising will not help keep any loyalties. For example, unrelated to the several pages thing, Digg.com has really annoying flash ads that pop out and cover the whole screen when you hover your mouse over them, which really take the piss when you do it by accident.. theres also an ad that has a 3D helicopter game which is totally cool but lags my browser to fuck. Shame, such a good website =P
Also, went to see Semi-Pro today.. FUCK YEAH. 5/5.
Sup, bitches :)

WHERE IS THE BALANCE POINT?
I'd love to make a living off of a website, but your right, it's hard to balance between personal and commercial...

The balance point probably involves having 1 personal and 1 commercial site, then paying someone a salary to manage the commercial site's business side.
