Anime Question
I've never been a fan of anime but since there are people here who are I've always wanted to ask, what is considered bad anime anyway?
Well, that really depends on taste. Generally, most people accept Inuyasha as a shitty anime, for example. It was canceled mid season. For an anime to be considered "bad", it usually falls under these catagories:
- Horrible animation (does not include OLD anime, unless it really is just shitty beyond excuse)
- Completely shit story
- Any combination of reasons why you wouldn't like a Flash
How can you tell its bad... i always found anime annoying cause i cant take it seriously.. itll be like a tense moment and this gigantic sweat drop will pop in to the characters forehead or like the lip synching is two mouth movements..
Okay, first, the lip syncing is just the way it is. Sometimes, it fits the Japanese, but do you complain when the same thing is done for a Flash submission? I have seen a lot of animes where they have the full mouth movements and facial features. As for the reasons you find anime annoying, try watching some different series. Pokemon and shit like that is geared towards kids. It's stupid humour that they love. Try something like Akagi or Death Note if you want some serious and intellectual shit, School Days if you want some depressing drama (that's what I just finished), and Afro Samurai and Eureka 7 are good action animes. If you like humour with a slight hint of blue to it, check out Air Gear or Cowboy Bebop.
however im not sure wether that is considered bad anime though... like maybe those things that annoy are what is typical of the anime style?
It's all opinion. I loved pokemon as a kid, but now I think it's complete shit. It's just to taste, like some people don't like horror movies.
Like for instance baroque art is very elaborate and gaudy.. and while i dont particularly care for it its like a calling card of the art style/movement so you sort of have to respect it.. so i was always curious from an anime enthusiast standpoint whats the 101 on the whole anime thing??? THIS IS FOR SERIOUS.
Hopefully I answered your questions well enough. For you, I could recommend a few, like I'd say Air Gear (fluid animation, great humour, decent story, and an original idea), Afro Samurai (A decent American Anime, Samuel L. Jackson does almost all the voices, unique animation style, fluid, and bloody, and short [about 5 episodes]), Death Note (somewhat of a psychological thriller, interesting plot line, great character development, original idea), Golden Boy (older, anime, but great animation, great humor, short series [6 episodes], but it does have some "sterotypical anime faces" while having a unique style), Ghost in the Shell (Smart, philosophical, great 3D work, an anime for intellegent people who like to think, much like Donnie Darko level of thought), and perhaps Elfen Leid (cute anime girls, lots of violence, some sexual humour, and some freaky-ass characters. The first 7 minutes is a solid bloodfest). Hellsing (It's not some cutesy shit, it's violent, it has vampires, and it has humor while balancing action and character development [14 episodes], plus it's one anime I would recommend to watch in English [I think it's the only one I would do that for!])
Things I would not recommend for you, Luis: ANY NARUTO EPISODES (Regardless of how well-done the fighting is), Tokyo Mew Mew (Too cutesy for you), Today In Class 5-2 (It's kinda Loli, plus it's got those stereotypes you hate), Inuyasha (It's gay, just forget about it), Dragonball (any of them, they all suck and they have the stereotypes you hate), Negima (You'd hate it, way cute), One Peice (Gay, stereotypical, geared towards kids), Tsubasa Chronicles (stereotypes, blah blah blah), Full Metal Panic! (Holy shit steretypes out the ass), Angelic Layer (Funny, but not for you), and DearS/Chobits (Cutesy love anime. not for you either).
Things you might like but I'm not sure: FLCL (Cliched anime, but it's decent and short [6 Episodes]), Akira (Movie, it's considered a classic, but it's kinda like a Tron-esque old anime. It is one of the first ones translated to English though and it was a spearhead of anime coming to america), Bleach (decent animation and blood, but gay concept and way too much filler), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Good animation, kinda got some loli, a bit of sexual humor and it has only a few sterotypes. It's only 6 episodes, minus the extras), Miyazaki films (very unique stories, amazing art, but might not be your taste), D.Grey-Man (Good animation, decent humor, deals with exorcists and demons, but it's really long [42 episodes and still going]), Darker Than BLACK (Smooth animation, good story, a bit vague at times, and lacks some character development [not finished, it's at about 20 episodes], good soundtrack), and Ergo Proxy (a futuristic I-Robot like thriller, an amazingly unique style, [22 episodes], nice character development, but it gets a bit sketchy towards the end and is hard to follow).
We'll make a believer out of you yet, Luis!
Also, Tom, that list you pointed to, was shitty. He was completely biased and missed a lot of great ones while saying some of the great ones were shit, and some of the shit ones were great. You can't have a list like that unless you work with an actual group from all around the world to reach a general consensus and get an accurate view. Most anime is decent, just not all of it. Don't go by his list. It was gay. What I gave Luis was what I have seen and what I think he might like.
Hannibal
Anthony Hopkins is an amazing actor, but the books are much better. I mentioned Thomas Harris last page, and he's the guy who wrote them.
