No, I don't think Facebook is retarded at all. It doesn't have to be cluttered either, you can just remove all stupid apps... especially that stupid zombie thing.

Hm, maybe I should of chose my words more correctly. Not exactly meaning retarded, just a bit annoying. I guess I'm just not used to the site and I don't exactly like the whole thing. Hm, you can really remove stupid apps? Eh, i'll look into that.
Guys, err.. is there any point in flash having buttons and graphics? Because you can do everything buttons and graphics can do with movieclips..
maybe i'm just retarded..

Here is how you remove apps: go to you homepage and the apps list will be on the far left under the facebook icon and you click edit and then this simple manage list comes up
OH and Battered-Prawn I agree with you on how they are like the same

Files size.
Movieclips>Buttons>Graphics>Unsymboled.
Theres actually quite a big different between them all (forgot the actual amount).
Idea
I had a great idea on the way back from holiday today. NG Zoom Quilt! People would make one picture section thing, PM me with it, and I would put them all together, program it (wouldnt bee too hard), and tada! (BTW - I'm saying 'I', so that jmtb02 doesnt swoop in and make a thread about it and organise it - I dont actually want people PMing me pictures now).
It wouldnt have to be NG themed, just NG made.
People - dont say 'but how would people know what to carry on from?' or any other complex questions, I would clear those questions up if I actually make it.

Coolio and thanks :D
I can't believe I never realised that about graphics before, :)
And thanks trig1 for the info about file sizes.
Holy crap it's hard to code when you've had afew ciders............

Well, graphics don't play with their own timelines which makes them good for cycles and stuff in animation, unless you want your guy to do a moonwalk when you stop the main timeline. Buttons are basically specialised and more convenient MovieClips.
Still, custom classes FTW.
..::graphic symbols::..

Yeah, most people never do, they see "movie clip" and automatically think that it must be for animation, while graphics are, for the purposes of animation, superior.
Not only do they animate on the main timeline, you can cut them with a new keyframe at any point of the animation and delete the frames before it so that you can start an animation at any point of the graphic. Also; when you have a stop action or if the user right click stop, graphics will stop while movie clips keep playing.
When I first figured out that graphics work much better then graphics I was kicking myself for not realizing it sooner, because I did a lot of in movie clip animation and it always bothered me that you could right click stop it and fuck up the whole animation.

Or better yet, you could just type the fame to start at in the 'first frame' box.
Graphics are awesome. The single frame options and junk also make them pretty awesome for having lots of different static images in if you're not a big fan of large libraries.
I admit that I didn't know about graphic symbols until recently, and boy do I feel dumb, they're awesome, I hated counting frames in a MC to try to synch something up outside of it...if you're still using MCs for everything and you're an animator...you seriously need to check into graphic symbols.
Clock Day?
Clock Day's in four days and still no news post about it? Tom must still be busy.

That was when a bunch of morons submitted a million swfs of a badly drawn duck into the portal. Luckly they were all deleted and somebody even made a parody of it. I don't know exactly who did it though.
NG Zoomquilt

Sure. I'll play... Get jmtb02 to PM me when he starts the thread ;p
I'm assuming it'll be like the normal Zoomquilt and we'll be drawing in a rectangle with a blank center so everyone's work fits inside the space we leave out? Or are you coming up with something much more witty? (I'm hoping for a Droste Effect with a Spiral...)
Google linking = Bannable Offense
Browsing the Forum Rules (because, hey, everyone should do it every so often just to remind themselves of the rules) and I found this little chestnut...
If you break these rules, you're definitely risking being banned. Think before you post.
* Sniping or knocking established NG groups, such as the Clocks, Locks, IWP.
* Posting "Use the search", "Use Google" or similar messages without providing relevant links.
Can we have the mods start suddenly enforcing this one? I think it'd be funny...

Sniping at Flash groups and such, yeah, sure, I'll gladly lock anti-clock rants.
Most people give a link to google in some smartass response, it's kinda borderline, in my opinion.

I personally see it as people being elitist bastards and not trying to help people get involved in the scene. We all know where Google is - it doesn't need saying three times in a thread. And a link to the AS Main links thread is bewildering. Newbies need guidance, not people with a holier than thou attitude telling them thier problem can be solved by entering text into Google.
At least linking to the results page of what they should be searching for looks like they rubbed two neurons together writing the post!

I think the whole "Google" thing is for people who...
...are sick of answering the same simple questions that could easily be found with an even easier simple search. :P
@Kayne: I see your point, maybe I should start kicking some asses. In the art forum I have to tell people to read the damn rules in practically every post I make, guess I should start laying the beatdown in here too.
@Generate: Spam posts piss me off, if someone is continually posting spam I'll ban them. One word posts = spam.

"are you able to close forums as your a mod, as my forum isnt goin great, and id prefer if it got removed
Thanks"
lol anyway i didn't realize so many people never used graphics before... animators even.
The subject of that inspired me to look up a little flash trick that i never used before. The scale9grid or 9-slice scaling mode of a movieclip.
Anyway I see it as being really useful for dynamic menus and such.
http://denvish.net/ulf/110807/68874_scal e9.php
It keeps the proportions of the corners and sides when you scale.. and it's so easy to do too I wonder why I never used it before.
Just right click a movieclip symbol in the libary, select properties, click advanced, and check the box for enable guides for 9-slice scaling.
Go into the clip symbol, and move the guides around. Bam.
It would probably also be cool combined with some masking effects too.
Anyway it's a really neat trick. Anyone else have any little tricks to share?

I always wonder what the 9-scale thing did, thanks for that :)
Something useful I've known about for ages but only started using just this minute is the 'brush mode' when you use the paintbrush tool. The button for it is just above the bit where you slect brush size (by default anyway). It lets you change the way you paint, like you can have it so it paints behind pre-existing fills, oronly paint within what you have selected. Useful for colouring inside the lines :p

Nineslicing and the Brush modes have been tricks I've known for ages. They speed my workflow up considerably.
One of the best tools I have for designing interfaces is, worryingly enough, the Convert Lines to Fill tool.
Convert a nice solid border to a fill, put borders around it, and remove the fill - and voila, a fancy double border. Combine this kind of thing with breaking text apart and you suddenly have some very wierd effects that take a grand total of two seconds to pull off...
My current favorite little trick however are Gradient Masks. In Flash 8 or higher, make a mask with a gradient going from Black 100% alpha to Black 0% alpha, turn it into a Movie Clip and have it mask a movie beneath it. Turn on "Enable Runtime Bitmapping" on both MCs (or do it with code and the setmask function, which is how I do it normally anyway), and we have alpha masking...
So pretty.

Photoshop or some other image editing software is an obvious one. 3-D programs can help you with certain things, Swift 3-D can export to Flash, so you don't have to import a huge video file to have some cool 3-D effects. CDex is good for ripping music, and Audacity is good for recording and editing sounds. Those are the only other programs I've had to use while creating Flash.

What do you think you really need to have to make your flash the best it can be? Obviously don't say "Photoshop", as nearly everyone uses it. Then again, you can say that.
Anyway, what do you use, and why? Is it effective, etc! I'm gonna pay attention, as I want my up-and-coming flashes to be as top-of-the-range as possible!
before I was able to get artists for games, and for certain puzzle games (magnetism) I used Swift 3D a lot. It was cheap and easy to use.

I don't get out much. But I've been to several countries.
Canada, Mexico, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Good times, I'd love to live in Stockholm if I had money.
