Right now I'm feeling very impressed by this forum. I hang out/mod the art forum as well, and there's always a lot of crap to clean up. Now in here once in awhile we'll get some newbies who haven't read the sticky or someones alt account that thinks they can be Jamrock. But there really isn't a lot to mod with you guys. So, yeah, keep on being awesome. =]
The only real thing i've noticed is people who post realyl pointless posts like "I really don't know".

That's so irritating! Someone will ask for example 'how do you instantly get rid of all the panels in flash? i cant remember how to do it anymore :(' and someone will answer 'i cant remember either :('.
But other than that, as BlackmarketKraig said, It's quite a nice forum. I think the Flash forum is tidier than General etc. because there are less people posting because they are bored, and more people posting because they want to help each other and stuff.

Good Behavior
Yeah, it's been a pleasant second half of the Summer thus far. June/july was pretty out of hand in some places, ban sticks flying everywhere.

I am hoping this trend will continue into the Fall.

EA Games
This guy from EA games keeps calling me, trying to offer me a job. He's been doing it for nearly a year, calling me and emailing me every few months to keep up with how my life is going. We talk about the Flash gaming market, the independent scene, and so on. He's the director of the Sims, and is a nice guy, but I don't really want to work at EA quite yet in my life. I want a little room to breathe before jumping into the largest gaming company in the world.

What do you guys think? Would you work at EA games if you had the chance?

RE: EA Games

I would probably work for EA games if i had the chance. But i'd make sure that i had sorted everything out first and that i felt i was deffinatly good enough and be able to cope with that sort of thing.

Good luck though. I think you should accept it eventually ;)

If not tell him how fab i am ;)

Please tell me that this guy you speak of is not Will Wright...

If I were you, I'd make sure that I would straighten things out first and plan ahead as to what I would be devoting my time to whilst and after I'm working. As, if you take the job, you'd make Flash games a lot less frequently, and we'd see a lot less jmtb02 in the Flash forum from that point onward. What exactly would you be doing at EA if you were to accept the job offer?

EA Games

Is the job flash games, or full on consol and computer games?

I think working for a big, multinational business making the things you would be at home, but undecided by you, and having to turn up at offices at certain times, and not being in control of the games you're making, is just plain soulless. I'd prefere staying at home, making them myself, despite the lowwer pay.

Its Adam Philips and Disney - but with coders :P

That's another thing... I am not quite sure what I would be doing. It would either be console or computer, definitely not Flash though.

Working at a company as large as EA games would sorta be the equivalent of a band selling out in my opinion. The pay is probably very nice, but its like selling your soul. I would prefer to work with a company like that on a single project just so I could say I worked with them, but not work there long term. It's really a hard decision though...

jmtb02 with EA Games

I say, if game developing is what you want to do then you should go for it. And if the guy you were talking about is so keen on you then push the money bar up to maximum, go above is initial salary suggestion.

lol, I'm not a big follower of bands, but from what I can see any band which ever gets any money or recognition for anything anywhere ever is 'selling out'.

The bigger question is whether you're going somewhere you like in life, and whether it's going to allow you to continue your personal projects.

EA is super corporate in how they make games, some people where I work left them because of that it apparently really isn't a free flowing atmosphere.
I could never see myself coding for the rest of my life as a job so in this life I would take any coding job =P
Sounds liek the oppurtunity is going to be around for at least a bit longer, so I suppose you have a little bit of time to make the decision, Sort of depends on what you want to do and how you see your life going. But if I could ever take a job coding I would probably investigate the offer more.

Kart man a director isn't the same thing as creator, quick google found me that this guy...

Development Director, Dominique Philippine directed the sims =D

Well jm, I think you should take the opportunity, it would be great to get started professionally, and to even be in the game industry sounds awsome, even if it is EA.

Although I'd like to know, what does a game director do? Do they have to program or are they leading the creative process in the development team?

Whoa its me!

Well, if you plan to make games professionally, having the experience of working for EA games would look really good on a resume for when you go to apply for a higher level job or a different company who might not be familiar with your flash games.

If I was in the situation, I'd think about it. If I thought I'd have a better chance applying for another company, I'd try that first. But if you're looking for a job after college john, you should probably take it while you still have the chance.

Anyway I have 5 years before I have to start searching for a job.

RE: EA Games

Hmmm....working at EA Games....i think id agree with you jmtb. if i was your age, id proabbly wait a little bit and have some time to clear up anything else you had to finish. But if i was ready for it i think i would work there, even though EA Games is more of the 3D stuff and less 2D gaming.

If you were thinking of working for a company like EA, you'll need top expand towards £d. If you haven't, learn some C++, that'l probably come in handy. Anyway, it's a pretty rare opportunity, and i know I'd love to work for EA, but if you're not ready, ask what the job is and think it over.

Lucky bastard :P.

..::do it for me topics::..

I'm pretty sick of "idea" people myself, coming in here and fully expecting everyone to drop everything and make some idiotic Flash for them. Who do they think they are? Most Flash people I know have more ideas than time to make them.

..::jmtb02 ea games::..

Hmm... at least you know that you have in demand skills. Even if you never plan on accepting the job it must be nice on the ego. =]

Going corporate or staying independent

From someone in the professional scene for about 5 years, i think theres definately a crossroads that comes up... on ethe one hand staying independent means you can work in your underwear and what not... but at the same time you are your own boss which is stressful.. means you definately have to do your own bookkeeping and shit, come taxtime if you havent kept good records prepare to be raped...

i personally find that going corporate gives you the financial freedom that freelance does.. you have a steady paycheck and shit. I also find that going corporate you can make your money without draining your enthusiasm ... i found doing freelance that alot of the times you feel like its a job and it takes away from your enthusiasm... going corporate gives me an opportunity to make my money and still have the urge to come back and do my own thing which is priceless...

With the whole EZ/jmtb thing, I got thinking...

How many of you younger flash artists plan on working in the game industry in the future? I know I do.

I do as well. If not games, something that has to do with animation. I'd prefer games though, lol.

Re: AxisHOST

When I first saw that they were being taken over, I too was disappointed at the unprofessional way I saw Tina responding to posts. However, my price has stayed the same, I haven't had any issues personally with them, and when I emailed a question Tina gave me a quick and polite response.
On the other hand, I can't say I'd recommend getting new hosting with them, as they seem quite expensive. I got six times the storage space of their Multi-E package (don't recall the bandwidth at the moment) for only $54 per YEAR; that's $10.99 cheaper than their MONTHLY price. So yeah, I've had no problems with them, but their pricing seems a bit steep.
