Graphics Tablets::

Probably been discussed many of times before, but....how many of you guys actaully own and use a graphics tablet?
I've got a graphire3 and its sort of broken. Even when the pen isn't touching the tablet it starts drawing. Pisses me off. So, I mainly use my mouse for flash, it's not that bad. But, I'm really considering buying myself an Intuos3.

I own the same (Graphire 3) and I used to have that problem as well, but it went away of it's own accord. Meh...

yah, its broken. I had this problem with 1 of the tablets at my school. Probablem was it was the one i took to another city for animations competitions, it was a bitch to work with.

I don't know exactly what you mean, because they are supposed to register the pen even if it's a centimeter or two above the surface. That way you can trace things.

Well...when i hover my pen above the surface and move it around it registers as a click and starts drawing. The only time it stops drawing is when I lift the pen completely away but then it doesnt even register the pen.
Im pretty sure its fucked.

Isnt it kind of limiting to an artist to only be able to make nice little kid movies?

I disagree, Children have the largest imaginations and are entertained by the stupidest things..
Pixar have the appropriate audience because:
A. They make a shitload from kids
B. They can animate whatever they want
Which is perfect for children. $$$$$.

However, a little bit of variety wouldn't harm anyone, a gory killbill cgi film would satisfy me.

RE:Noob Crews
Teams never seem to go anywhere, they just seem to clutter a thread for a week and disappear. Usually created by someone who had seen success by other teams of artists/animators/programmers, whereas crews are more of a community usually trying to help everyone improve their flash skill. Maybe they don't annoy me because I was in one for awhile and am pretty much a noob myself.

I think kids are a lot more morbid and curious than people think. When you're little evil seems cool and suductive. When you're a kid you don't know what horrible atrocities humans actually commit and are capable of.

I think Pixar could do dark but do it in such a way as not too seriously offend the the senses of reasonable people. Disney has darkness in some of their films, someone usually dies, there is always an evil element, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, anyone? The Series of Unfortunate Events books are popular with children, same with Harry Potter.

Kids like darkness and I think it's time someone took advantage of that.

speaking of getting darker theres this emo kid. Anyone read Brendan-Harris topics yet. He's the amazingly funny kid who thinks he's amazing and wants everything his way. It's pretty funny to read or respond. It's like playing WoW and being in a team with one of those screamers.

Films this summer
I'm not sure of the name or if it is coming this summer.. but it is a movie about some people getting trapped in an hotel.. i think it is called Vacancy... not sure...

Flash as a job
I've never been paid for making flash, if i do flash as a job.. what would be my hobby? anyways i want to make cartoons when i grow up :P .. which gets me to...

I like to do flash and stuff for myself, i think that whe nyou start to do it for other people.. well it loses its charm and becomes commercial. I say this because i know a guy who never came back to newgrounds because his submission was unknown.. and who told me to make a myspace instead of a page in freewebs because more people would see it in myspace.... what do you think about doing stuff.. for yourself....?

Well with the series I'm making now, the writer said he might buy me a Tablet if he gets the chance. But other than that, I don't think there are that many Flash based jobs in Australia, as there are in America, or other countries for that matter.

I got offered an amazing Flash job a couple of years ago, I got a ways into it then I hit a block and I haven't been able to finish anything since. I kinda burnt out. Sucks, I really wanted to do it, and more projects but it's like I haven't been inspired at all.

I like to do flash and stuff for myself, i think that whe nyou start to do it for other people.. well it loses its charm and becomes commercial. I like putting stuff on my MySpace, even though I have a website, right now all my images on MySpace were Flash made (with photoshop assistance) I don't have a proper animation up there now, but it's great to have little animations and other Flash.

Well there are some I've checked out, but most of them require AS skill, '1-3 years previous work experience in the field of<whatever job>, other programming languages such as HTML, C++ etc. and various other programs.
This is for multimedia web design/advertisement though.

But there's bound to be some sort of job that requires Flash sooner of later. They're starting to replace conventional still image and even .gif advertisments you see everywhere, and also on television.

The I try to make a myspace just to post on toher people's myspace... but i cound't go through the part where you ned to write the numbers you see, i always typed the numbers i saw.. but it said they weren't valid, so i gave up.. i'm not a robot!! >.<

There are actually quite a few out there if you look around, most will be hard to find though because usually they don't ask for previous experience in flash, usually they offer to teach it to you in your training but knowing your way around it would be a plus to getting the job.

If you've heard of Phill Collins, he's a flash animator on newgrounds, he also has a job working with flash, originally he didn't know any AS but they've been teaching him stuff where he works and he's getting a lot better.

Seems silly to me, there aren't that many uses where you could use flash exclusively... and as a programmer it couldn't really lead anywhere seeing as AS doesn't really tie into other languages other than being a "gateway" language...

I suppose if you were an amazing animator it wouldn't matter what program you used a studo would pick you up and teach you what they used... but its really one of those things that it is rare to have a job entirely out of one program... of course it does happen... The one example I can think of that really just makes games is Kenny and if anyone read that article it doesn't seem to be working out for him to well =(

Of course unless I'm mistaken Luis only uses flash but for freelance animaton I doubt they care what you use you're just making them a small (or large) animated toon.

What I'm trying to get at is that it's one of those things that if you are SUPER talented and skilled at you could make it work as a job but other than that attempting to make a living entirely off flash specifically just doesn't seem practical or particuarily possible. Even if there are flash studios that do well you really have to be the best of the best in some respect, give them something that everyone else can't. Just doesn't seem like a practicle living to make

Haha, well thank you so much. They're 2004 and early 2005. I've done a couple of collabs since, I'm fairly proud of my stuff in the Mad World Collab. I've just lost my muse. Something bad happened to me in 2005 that kind of killed a part of me. I'm hoping that relocating myself to Denver will help get me inspired (and give me a chance to correct the bad thing). But yeah, that's my story.

Flash as a Job

First off, I thinks ng will remain the mother of flash entertainment, the redesign's features are/will be above and beyond anything that ebaums / kongregate / insert whatever / or any other knock off can offer you...

As for my situation and flash, i used to freelance and do flash gigs on the side. Its aight... its not as glamorous of a lifestyle as it seems... sure youre doing flash and making some money but after awhile it wears on you... like you start to feel like your interest in flash is becoming a 'chore' rather than a passion.. the exception to this was making flash sites, using flash for web design always felt different than using it for animation.. but flash websites are a dying niche with greater advances in css2 and other technologies.

These days i make my bread and butter not with flash but by doing css and other shit.. i find that for me it still feels like its in my niche but its not so married to flash that it ruins my love for the scene. Theres such a great weight off your shoulders when you can open a flash document and know that the world and your bank account doesnt rely on what comes as a product of that flash you are about to start with.

I'm still yet to really understand what CSS is other than cascading style whatever and that it's for websites... =P

But I kind of think that sort of proves what I was trying to say... On the topic of Flash Ads and such I have to say that "Mobster" ad that comes up alot has to be the ugliest thing I've seen in a while they didn't even take the time to make the background pictures black rather than the dark grey boarder.

I'm curious to learn what CSS really is so I guess its off to wiki. =D

I had recently stumbled across a Brad Bird (Ratatouille) podcast from earlier this year... so, may be old news... but I thought it was pretty interesting to hear about how he got into animating at age 11, working with the guys at Disney...at age 14, and his views on animation today.
