Movies

I dunno about you guys but i do like to see terrible movies sometimes.. its fun. Well worth the 7.50 or whatever... thats how i felt when i went to see Judge Dred, 11th Warrior, Constantine, etc.

In other news this is an awesome book i recommend it... I havent even watched the movie for it yet but its such well designed and each page is like a work of art, i had to have it. I'm probably gonna base the sketchbook tour on its layout. (btw buy it on amazon its much cheaper than going to the bookstore like i just did.)

Mogly had once mentioned to me that itd be fun to make some sort of collab where its very over the top like this movie is... its a decent idea i may have to visit.

I completely agree with you, V for Vendetta is defiantly one of my favorite movies of all time.

the only gripe I have with that movie is the part where she comes out of the prison and its raining and she's crying and stuff. I guess its supposed to be moving or symbolic of her intellectual freedom, and then goes along with his escape, but i find it to be akwardly out of place and just kind of stupid.

I like to watch sci-fi kind of terrible movies. Like shitty B movies.

If its a big budget hollywood movie that just sucks, I cant watch that.

Have any of you ever heard of the movie, "The Boondock Saints", its an amazingly hilarious and violent movie! I'd dare say it could be better then V for Vendetta... but I won't. Its a B movie, but with a great script.

Ratatouille is my favorite movie so far this year, no joke. I had to go back and see it again for a second time because I was in shock from the incredible animation from Pixar the first time around. Definitely worth a watch.

Great ratings so far... averaging 9.5/10 out of critic ratings, and critics try to hate. I really want to see it.

Pixar

They are so overrated, im not gonna see anything done by them anymore. They lost touch with animation, they are more about trying to make cartoons that are over the top in detail and realism. Do i really need to see each individual hair on the character move? no.

Their characters have no personality and artistic touch in my opinion. Its all eye candy. They are so concerned about making a 'real' life feeling cartoon and that shtick only works for so many movies.

Best over the top, hillarious, action movie EVAR

Kung Fu Hustle. If you've not seen it yet, you totally have to. I watched it a couple of days ago, and literally had to watch it all over again straight away. It's such a fun film.

Basically, imagine the Matrix, except that instead of all the boring stuff and pseudo-philosophy in between all the fight scenes you have more fight scenes and pure comedy gold. Plus it's about 500x more over the top and cartoony, as well at much nicer to look at. Actually, it's superior to the Matrix in every way, so that's a bad analogy.

The plot's gloriously unimportant - basically a load of gangsters with axes and top hats get pissed off at this slum. Fortunately for the residents, this slum just so happens to have the highest concentration of secret martial arts masters of anywhere in the world, so the good guys and bad guys just begin kicking the crap out of each other. Repeatedly. And it just gets more and more excessive as time progresses - by the end the main main bad guy pulls a move which literally shoots the protagonist into the clouds.

It also has dancing gangsters.

..::Pixar::..

I have to disagree with you on that one, Luis. Pixar is, to me, the only worthwhile, major 3D outfit. Their movies are charming and entertaining. The animation is hardly realistic, sure they do a lot of perfectionist work trying to get flab to move realistically and rendering hair, like you said, but it's cartoon to the core. I think that the characters have a lot of personality and the voice actors are not picked because they are the biggest names in showbiz, but people who bring a lot of character to their roles, I mean Sarah Vowell(?) I'm the only person I know who knew who she was before the Incredibles came out.

..::Kung Fu Hustle/Iron Monkey::..

Kung Fu Hustle was pretty fun, I enjoyed the over the top-ness of it greatly and the fighting was great.

Speaking of over the top martial arts movies have you ever seen Iron Monkey? It's another great one but it's not as cartoonish as Kung Fu Hustle. Definately my favorite martial arts movie.

I love Asian cinema :P I'm hardly an expert, but most DVDs I get now seem to be Eastern. I've got a few Park Chan-Wook ones including his vengeance trilogy (easily one of my favourite directors of all time) and I'm building up my Kurosawa collection.

Still, I guess that it's mainly the best Asian films that get shipped to the Western market, so there's probobly a wide range of B-Movies and crap I'm missing out on :(

Ong Bak is another awesome film :P It's much more realistic than Kung Fu Hustle. If you want to see two opposing ends of a spectrum of immensity, try out those too.

I'll certainly see about ordering those other films you mentioned too.

Kung-Fu Movies

It's to bad that I don't see many of them, but there's no doubt that some of them are the best movies I've ever seen. Everything from the 80's with the crappy cameras to today... I jus tlove to watch them.

I actually think Ratatouille is amazing in being great for almost every age range. I never thought I'd sit for an hour and a half watching rats cook and come out of the movie with a need to watch it again. The characters were all incredible, my favorite was the critique, whom was a gloomy and pale, lanky HP Lovecraft looking guy. The movie was also hilarious, and even if you don't buy into the whole detail thing, it's amazing to see the water bounce around.

That movie was alright. Didn't like it that much but the animation was like any other Pixar.

I may be going to see that with my sister, it seems like a big leap in Pixar animation, because they have added a lot more details.

I saw Monster House and the starting animation was great! When theres a leaf blowing in the wind it looks great! But I think Ratoutoutoutille will be better graphic wise.

RE: Pixar

I like Pixar - I don't care what anyone says :P Although, I do get slightly annoyed by the bullshit about "x million hairs animated at once, blah". So? Ridiculously resource consuming animation does not mean good films. People are way, way too concerned about CGI graphics nowadays, both in films and in gaming. I love all the old stuff where they used to use models rather than computers - it just feels so much more genuine.

RE: Pixar

I wonder if they are contractually bound to always make kiddie movies... it would be so refreshing for them to make a kill bill type of movie where its just over the top violent and unashamed. Id so watch a movie wear loveable creatures are murdered with careful attention to every blood pellet or some shit.

I don't think that would fit in the fact that pixar is a Disney company and they would not do anything like that, although there is Nightmare Before Christmas, Disneys darkest movie.

I like Pixar movies, not DreamWorks; dreamworks just copies pixar.

If pixar artists are at all ARTISTS.. then theres gotta be some dark horses in there in the mix... surely it must get frusterating doing G rated movies all your life. Id commit suicide.
It would be finely animated with monster particle effects of course being pixar and all.

Apparently Brad Bird, who made Iron Giant, Incredibles, and Ratatouille is working on the first live-action Pixar movie called 1906, and it's about the San Fransisco Earthquake. Doesn't sound too kiddie to me, looks like they have a lot of freedom to make what they want at least - Disney couldn't have been too pleased to try and market rats cooking in a kitchen.

But that at least has me wondering/hoping that the Pixar guys mess around now and then and create some little small short or something that's just completely sick and disgusting - like the characters in Bug's Life just getting squashed or something haha.

always behind schedule.

Can't argue with that. Isn't that the reasoon Tim Burton was fired from Disney, his stuff was too dark? I wonder what some of those pixar people spend their spare time doing in the field of art.

Actually, I was referring to the use of CGI in live-action films there :P Animated films probably aren't going to use models by definition, especially since Aardman's stuff all melted.

Also, I don't want to make it seem like I disapprove of films going for the best graphics possible. It's just all the bullshit surrounding it that's irritating - there's no reason to mention in an interview how many hairs you've got animated. How would you Flash animators feel if someone decided it was a good idea to advertise your stuff as 'featuring over six million vectors'?

I agree with you, actually back in the day (i dunno if they still do it) Flash animators would mention how many symbols they used and how many cans of coke. COMEON.
