I dunno, Pixar is one of the first studios to do this, everyone just started copying thier success, they can't really be overrated if they made the standard which still hasn't been topped, except by some Final Fantasy cut-scenes in FFXII.

And snox ma man, you were cooler at lvl 16... now I hardly reckognize you : (

..::Pixar::..

Pixar is the best major animation studio out there right now, 3D or no. Their movies have been consistantly good, they have the most original ideas and they have great directors like Brad Bird (the Iron Giant, the Incredibles).

It's a sad, sorry state for traditional animation in the US right now as there haven't been any good feature 2D's in quite awhile. But it has moved to the "underground" where 2d animation is taking over the web.

Apparently, the word 'movie' is a spelling error.

RE: 2D animation

At 6/29/07 03:29 PM, Kanadian-Keith wrote: Aleast you can count on The Simpsons for 2D animation.

I lost all respect for the Simpsons' animation when I saw one of the trailers for the movie (which looks pretty bad). It was along the lines of "In a time when 3D CGI animation ruled the world blah blah blah well gay blah... we're well awesome", proper going on about how they were sticking to traditional 2D animation, then the very next shot showed Homer driving what was a blatantly CGI bulldozer down a blatantly CGI terrain. Like they're expecting an audience to be fooled by the fact that it had black outlines.

Seriously, if they want to integrate more up to date and computerised animation techniques that's cool, but cut the bullshit at least. Personally, I always found a massive charm in 2D animations which don't feel the need to give their characters 360° rotation. If you're going to go to that much effort to give something the illusion of an extra dimension, why not just film it?

I found out yesterday that Brad Bird is from where I live. And no, I have never met him.

3d/2d animation movies

obviously it's cheaper and easier to make a crappy 3d model and rotate that over a 2d bg instead of drawing it frame by frame..

and even then alot of companies just use cumputers for 3d stuff..

which is hwy i like anime so much, soo much hand drawn stuff, it's always high detailed and beautioful.. and even when they use 3d, like in steamboy, it looks amazing AND still animeish.. unlike stupid american 3d over 2d where it stands out wayy too much..

mostly, if using 3d in 2d cartoons, cel shading....

lazyness.

At 6/29/07 03:56 PM, Kanadian-Keith wrote: 3D/2D animation

I agree, when American cartoons try to put 2D with 3D the 3D stands out a lot, but in overseas cartoons, the backgrounds are done so beautifully in 3D and still has a nice contrast with the 2D.

I can't rly agree with you :P. Family guys uses ALOT of 3D throughout alot of the episodes but its not very noticable and blends in well. However, I did see one cartoon on toon disney and there was a helicopter taking off and it lifted into the air and then all of a sudden you see a super shiny low qaulity 3d helicopter do a spin and fly off into the bg. I wanted to rip my eyes out after seeing that :(

The Simpsons

So they use CGI in the movie, I doubt that they would use it in the cartoon and it would be a dumb move if they did, they went all this time with traditional 2D animation, I'd hate to see them add 3D except for that one Tree House of Horrors episode where Homer becomes 2D, that was cool and a one time thing.

I didn't know that used CGI in the movie. I hope it looks cool :D

..::3D vs 2D::..

I think one place where 3D and 2D were effectively used in conjunction was Futurama. That show kicked ass on so many levels.

yeap.. mainly cuz in that the show was futureistic and the whole 3d in 2d world worked nicely... even when it was full 3d it looked perfect..

but int he simpsons it just doens't work since they used 2d for 390 or so shows.. but when they used 3d it just stood out so badly.

Aladin used 33d for the magic carpet and that worded great cuz the whole world they had drawn around it was just as detailed and yummy :P

Age and animation

i guess us arguign abotu this wont matter really..

the older generation dont understnad thuis stuff and dont care. they like the old aniamtion and just go ' wow look what they can do with computers these days' and go off to watch repeats of dads army.

the younger generation are far too stupid to understand and to busy killing each other and playing gta and crap to notice. they just go 'omg the grpahcis lol' and go watch epic movie and enjoy it.

the middelground , of which a few of us are apart of, notice these thigns and acutlly have an IQ aswell as knowing what IQ stands for!

End of the world

I'd give humanity a good few deades untill it destorys itself... 50 years...

Animation

I personally like 2D and 3D but the problem is 3D isn't used properly in most cases, 3D movies now-a-days are generic copies of one another. OMG spoof of childrens fairy tales? We must do it! OMG talking fish is a great idea thanks pixar! Lets get Will Smith to voice the fish and then we make millions! Thats how they make their movies now, they copy pixar.

Animation

Not only do I prefer 2d, but I really like black and white, grainy/staticy animation (like easytoon stuff). I know it's probably not as appealing to most, but the simpler the animation, the more I like it, that just how I am.

same goes for me. the easytoon stuff really gets me. things like explosions and rays look really really good in an easytoon style. the only problem is its very hard to make a full length flash with easytoon because of the way it exports and saves. and to actually develop a style like that of easytoon would take a very long time and probably would not be worth the effort in the end.

A nightmare that pays, though. I bet they outsource that stuff to India or S. Korea anyway.

Job
I personally would love to be an animator for a show such as Danny Phantom or Dexter's Lab. Cartoons are awesome and just being one of the members of a crew that works on a show such as the two above would be amazing.

Since we are talking about nightmares of animating Barbie and Bratz, what do you think is the worse job you can possibly get for animation, what would be the last thing you would want to animate and why?

any kids cartoon would really get on my nerves. something like Dora the Explorer where you have to incorporate lessons and stuff like that into your animations would really be a pain in the ass. and that voice would probably make my head explode after awhile.
