Yeah, I remember ADHD used to be called, "You need to turn off that TV and go outside and play",
Or, the more famous, "If you're so bored, why don't you take out the trash?"
Boredom and misdirection ALWAYS found its way to house chores for some reason. It was best just not to let anyone know you didn't have anything to do!
I'd have rather mowed the lawn than be subject to society's little science eperiment any day though. =p

Ive had similar experiences. My brother told a tale of hsi the other day. He went to this party and eventually passed out on th sofa in their living room. In the morning the other guy that was sleeping in the same room (whose house it was) told him he had got up in the night and pissed in the corner all over the sound system. Fucking hilarious!
Yeah, all the AD(H)D stuff sucks.
My brother is the most creative person I have ever met. I love him sincerely, and a couple years ago from his lack of ability to make himself to "homework" (aka busy work), he was diagnosed with ADD (or it might've been ADHD, I don't remember). He was prescribed a whole lot of drugs that ultimately did no good.
He's still creative (thank god... he didn't use those pills for too long, they didn't really help him at all), but I feel like he has even more trouble now. He's taking a year off college because he wasn't doing well, and he would end up staying up all night (like til 3 or 4 in the morning) watching TV. Now staying up that late to work on schoolwork or do SOMETHING constructive is one thing, but TV is just too much of a waste of time. I feel like the ritalin and stuffs are at least partly to blame.
:'(

My mom always does that to me. That's why I never let her know I'm bored nowadays. It's just so hateful when anybody does that to you.
I think ADD and ADHD are just misunderstood. They are real and treatable illnessess no matter how many people have been mistakenly diagnosed there are those who are definately better off for having been correctly diagnosed. People that need to have your compassion rather than your contempt.
This sig is 100% effective protection from all hexes, curses, evil spirits and bad karma. Guaranteed.

Although it does help some, this doesn't hide the fact that the disorder is used as an excuse to try and numb students to a maintainable level of attention. I am not against the drugs themselves, but rather those that take advantage of the effects of the drugs.

I absolutely agree you BMK. It's a real problem that it seems only a handful of people have and it's being trivialized by premature diagnoses all over the country (or developed world for that matter). In a sense, it's the boy who cried wolf. Even if you do have ADD (equiv.), chances are that now the name's been abused so much, nobody is going to take your claim very seriously.
The people who actually have it also have my understanding (as best as I can give it) as well as my compassion. Really. But at the same time, how am I supposed to know who's actually afflicted with it anymore? I mean, christ, by the government's standards, we ALL have some sort of debilitating learning disability, don't we?
I think its the media. How many times have we seen an ad that tells us we have a problem with our eyes, sleeping, bowel movements, bodily functions, whatever? These medicine ads are telling us we have problems we didn't even know we had, and is telling us to see a doctor because there is a problem with us. Yes, my nose itches, but that doesn't mean I'm depressed.
Hi there!
I don't just think it's the media like that, I think TV cartoons are helping to cause it.
I mean seriously, look at what little kids watch. It's not calm, or anything. Not by a long shot. Everything's explosions and fast movements and stuff. Everything happens so fast and is so distracting, it's no wonder kids develop early-on an inability to concentrate.
To bring a lighter tone to this all, I think it is really cool that video games are trying to compensate for the violence they have been slandered to maintain incessantly with game like Brain Academy and other educational games with an entertaining twist. I have always believed that video games can be educational, but the education isn't explicit, its a subtle underlying effect slowly accumulated after playing for hours on end (I want to see a 10 year use that line to persuade a parent to let them play there games longer; that would make my day). Look at the Legend of Zelda games, they are loaded with puzzles of various strategic needs getting you to think and it also has realtime fighting getting you to think fast and govern techniques that will help in different battles. Maybe after playing awhile you realize that you will lose less hearts if you kill the blue guys before the red ones. It's things like these that help you grow in crucial ways. The education system likes to call it problem solving.
Y'know what... I imagine this is sort of related somehow, but god damnit, I'm really pissed off about this!
Here I am watching the new Dawn of the Dead on USA (channel 2). I've been looking forward to seeing this all week because they've been advertising it as being the uncut director's version.
Great! I think that's awesome. The opening even has a cool "This is uncut and may not be suitable..." message. Outstanding!
Blood and gore everywhere, this is going to be awesome. Boy they're sure not editing any of that out, oh but wait. What's this? Did he just say "shit"? No! He sure as hell didn't, not on my TV. That part got edited. Was that a breast? No! That got blurred. Okay, but it's unedited... maybe there won't be any commercials... yeah, guess what, Villa Vicenca's got condos in La Jolla from the mid 200's. >=(
Okay, maybe not the commercial bit, but this country has gotten way too conservative... or rather, I think it always has been. You can watch a woman give birth on TLC, but they'll blur out her snatch. You can watch a woman get breast implants on the same channel, but they'll blur out her nipple. They even show cadavers from time to time with their fucking genitalia blurred out.
Maybe the whole problem is that society would just rather we not express ourselves in any way that might disturb the masses. Hence, we don't tolerate active children who'd rather play in the street than do homework.
Yeah cheshire, it's actually become extremely rediculous:
People are constantly in debate over the amount of "pornographic" material in video games and on TV.
No one cares (I don't either, but I think it's more of an issue than "pornographic" material) about the amount of violence.
Look, when we were conceived, we had no clothes. Obviously, it was meant that way. We don't wear clothes to conceal (or we didn't start wearing clothes a long time ago to conceal), we wear them for practical purposes: To keep us warm, to protect us from things like cuts and scratches, and to protect from burns and things.
The fact of the matter is that we've become so obsessive about nudity, when it's our natural form.
In other non-retarded countries (like France, for instance. Plenty of others, but I only know France's "policy" personally) have no problem showing nudity on television. I was in France one time when there was like the Tour de France, and there was a shot where a chick flashed the riders as they went by, and they didn't blur it out or anything.
In another time, there was a commercial for a certain shampoo, and they just showed the chick completely naked in the shower, with no cover-up. I was kind of taken aback, because I'm so used to our stupid censorship over here.
Anyways, I just think it's rediculous that we're so prude.
+10 respect points for whoever caught dawn of the dead on USA tonight.. I loved it. Now I'm feeling halloweeny this week.

If you mean the 2004 version, yeah, that was a great movie. I didn't see it on USA tonight, but I saw it in the theater.
And if you meant the 1978 one, then -10 for me!

Another one of those sites that's stealing newgrounds's material without giving credit. Oh boy!
How can you exactly identify it as stealing? Who's to say they didn't get permission?
I mean I submit my games to lots of other sites, and to Newgrounds. That doesn't mean the other sites steal it from Newgrounds...

Awesome! Thanks Luis.

Well, in Australia, we don't have many 'med' ads on tv. And there aren't many kids 'doped up' for incorrect diagnosis' so we're pretty lucky. But we do have a dipshit prime minister who has his dick shoved up George Bush's ass so it even's it out.

Yeah, he's done many stupid things. Especially the Work Place Agreement or whatever it's called where everyone got fired for no reason then they got rehired for half the pay.

You spelled 'Great Britain' wrong...
This is why I want to bail out of America....hop over to England or something... maybe Canada.

Please watch the whole thing... the first 2 minutes are fairly boring.
I don't like living in the illusion of freedom. It just gets under my skin.
It's basically facism you can vote for.
Read the entire side note on the video too before watching. It'll get you interested.

Eugh. America looks like it's growing further and further isolated from the rest of the world, politically at least. You get that sort of stuff over here too, but not to that extreme.

Come over to Australia. It's good over here, we just get everything a few months later....
