Hey Johnny, nice to see you again :).
Operating Systems
I built a guide for Upgrading Flash and Vista. Maybe that can help you decide, as a Flash developer, if you want to jump from WinXP to Vista.
Hi there!
HO HO HOPE you become a Newgrounds Supporter this year!
We're working hard to give you the best site possible, but we have bills to pay and community support is vital to keep things going and growing. Thank you for considering!

Yeah, Direct X10 looks like one of those thigns you don't really need, but it feels so neccasary. Especially with games like Crysis Coming Along. Guess i'll need a new PC aswell :P.
Anyway, for now, ill stick with my Revamped Xp (Sorry for the enormous file size :( ) for now, it does its job. Thanks for the tips everyone :D.
Vista
Nobody likes it. Nobody wants it. But come on, everybody will get it :P
It's like what happened with XP, people didnt want it, but in the end nothing was compatible with older Windows versions and XP started becoming the only OS on the market.
Like it or lump it, unless you dont plan on getting any new software or games after next year, Vista is your only choice.
Bollocks >.<
Operating systems
XP looks like a stupid smiley a cross breed between a xD and a :P
Anyway, the only thing people like vista for is is super sleek design which you dont really need. The rest isnt a great big upgrade compared with 95' to xp. Still im a sucker for looks and aesthetics so ill probably want to upgrade. I also want a Mac
Vista
I was reading an article in PC magazine about the whole ordeal, and sure, DirectX 10's a plus, but it's so large and so different many people aren't going to want it. The thing is that every single computer that's going to come out is going to have it. There's going to be no escape. We wont be able to get away from it.
I've gone and become an SSBB addict... what to do, what to do...

not really, alot of people sitll ahve older windows versions, either due to money issues or saw no need to update.
if it works, why update!? who cares if it added new security crap .. can it sitll run those old programs and games? in some cases.. it can't, unles you get a patch, but someitiems the game or program is too old to get a patch for it.. then what do you do!?
If i'm gonna update the pc, i'll updtae it by getting a new better pc and blowing this one up with a hammer and my fist.

Watch that, then tell me Vista is the best looking OS :P One of the reasons i asked about a linux was because of that vid :D.
Btw, good job on lvl 12 Johnny
Vista
I want to know how many of you who comment poorly on Vista have ever used it. Blogs are fun to read and all, but first hand experience should be a benchmark for what you think. I still hear people hating on the PS3, and most people haven't even tried playing it yet.
Really from owning Vista beta and Ultimate now, the new Vista works great. The features and quality of the Operating System has increased several times over. The security and new features are great, and the system organization and streamlining make the system run extremely well. It just works better all around.
True, it chugs your resources, and you might have just started to get over your Windows 98 upgrade to XP, but I've had nothing but good experience with Vista.
Hi there!
Vista
Jtmb02, I have tried it, but I still don't like it. It's way to compact and takes up way to much space.

Yeah, it sounds good, although I've heard some bad stuff about it. I'll have to try it out soon, maybe when all the pc cafes get it, i'll go try it out.

Too compact and too large?

Pointlessness
How to Cheat and Hack Flash based Games
I foudn this very amusing, mainly cuz of the utter pointlessness of it all... all that work just to.. get a high score on a flash game!? how usefull....... but yet again:
Flash Windows Log-in
The Next Generation Logon Interface for Windows
Looks nice, yet another thing you can use flash for :)
Rather pointless really but still nice ;)

I've used it quite a bit. A lot of my friends downloaded it (we get free MS products from our Uni!) and I've used it on their PC's. I don't like it, it was laggy and seemed to focus more on looking good rather than working well. Also, I don't like the whole idea of Vista Exp.
Although having said that Vista will proberly be the dog's bollocks in a year (or so) when MS have issused a patch or two for it and when more programs are compatilble with it.
Vista stuff
To me Vista is intrigueing, the window setup on the commercial looks so cool. Plus its all shiny and new, I like shiny stuff! But I'm tired of everyone making new stuff when the thing they've got out isn't perfected, they have some problems with XP still that I don't like, they should just work on that.
RE: Vista
are people still using the subjects?
anyway, my dad got Windows Vista Ultimate from a friend of his, and, well, he really, really hated it. DVDs in his DVD drive weren't recognized, his scanner didn't show up, he couldn't play Call of Duty 2, and other things.
i like my windows xp, but until microsoft releases patches for program and hardware compatibility (i have a like a billion little USB attachments, which i need), i'm sticking with windows.
however, linux has always piqued my curiosity. if more programs were compatible with it, i'd probably have linux right now! but that isn't the case :P
RE: Vista
I'm probably going to have to get a Vista as my new computer. I'm not really sure what its like though. I just hope it really is better.
Blah Blah Blah Bista
Ya see, I got my computer before Vista was even release, and I don't plan to upgrade, so I have no real reason to worry about how shitty it is. It may be years before I ever even use it because I don't plan to upgrade even in the distant future. I may even get a Mac as my next computer.
OS BATTLES!!!
Go Pikachu I choose you!
But I kinda want one of each, Mac has a nice interface and you can't tell me Windows never stole some ideas from other OS's. That three dee Linux video was pretty nifty; I also like the elasticity of the windows, it gives it a nice feel. Changing the sides on a three dee cube is cool too but Mac has there on version of it for there new OS(leopard or something spotted) and it's more like four different screens that make a square but they don't seem to compare at all to a three dee display.
Vista does seem pretty gloss raped but nevertheless I'll end up with it but I will try and get a Mac, maybe even a Linux. I like them all but it'd be nice if there was just one, like when the GameBoy's reigned over the handheld market. Even though we had no choice for handhelds we didn't really care and complaign much because just about everything you needed was there...but then people started giving us things that we didn't think of but then wanted.
The newer Mac versions are pretty much Linux ripoffs, you know.
Macintosh is a late Linux branch, also.
Vista
It's way to compact and takes up way to much space.
Meant hard-drive space, sorry.
Out of all of you, who's actually PLANNING to get vista (or at least likes it)?
I've gone and become an SSBB addict... what to do, what to do...
I bought a poorer computer to not have to buy Windows XP seperately.
OS emo-edition
I think that its too early to really pass a verdict on vista. I never used it myself so i have no clue if its good or not but with any operating system... .actually, correction... with any microsoft os, its overfilled with issues at the start and they more or less iron it out with time, so to me i see it as something worthwhile a few months from now when its settled in and it isnt so crazy.
I personally like XP.. i work fast with it, it makes my computing life easy in my opinion and i can do what i need to do. I agree with John in some ways that its 'trendy' and 'cool' to be one of the kids who doesnt like an os/gaming platform when it comes out without even giving it a chance or being in tune with the natural process of something when it just comes out... flash 8 had a similar reception when it came out and macromedia scrambled around to fix shit and all that drama that ensued but with time it just sort of works out.

Remember, there's more to Flash games than Newgrounds. There are some flash games people PAY monthly subscriptions for. Wouldn't it suck if the MMO you were playing got hacked so easily?
Thanks for the link. Now I've got something to test security out on.

But it IS!
Hobby vs. Occupation debate
So I spent the better half of my morning arguing this with my co-worker and its relevant enough that i thought id engage the thread into it.
Heres my view on flash and work in general:
I personally believe that as a career.. doing what you love and being paid for it is more or less bullshit. I think the whole reason you love doing something is because its on your own terms... i think that when you do it as a job.. it really stops being on your terms. Either you work under someone elses budget or money or you have your own duties and bills that you need to oversee and make sure your work covers. So in that respect in my opinion it ruins it... and i dont want to be in a situation where i wake up and feel 'forced' to do it because that day will be the day i ruin my love for something. So in MY world i love doing something fairly related to what i enjoy doing but not literally doing that ... i love animation and i love doing it for fun.. i do design work to pay my bills and bring food on the table im happy not doing what i absolutely love for a living... anyway my co-worker says that its unmotivating to look at it that way and loving what you do and being paid for it is a possibility and can work in harmony.
Thoughts?

I wouldn't say it is such a definite matter. If I make a game I'll make it to take the candy from other people who need to win the AG contest more than me.
Hehe.
Hobby vs. Occupation
I'll continue my argument that my Hobby is forced to be my Occupation, and the only time I have to do my hobby is when I am getting paid to do it. Maybe in the future when I'm not paying for college on top of my usual bills, I'll be more energetic to do little side Flash ventures.
I think that's why I come to the BBS though. I like helping people with Flash and learning new techniques, and having face time with other developers. It's a place where I can have time to enjoy Flash as a hobby and not feel sir-grumps-a-lot when I hear "you're doin it for cash man!" And personally, I don't think it should be put against someone if they make an honest living as a Flash developer, not that I am pointing fingers or anything.
But yes, I believe hobby and occupation are on the same spectrum, just on opposite sides of the very skinny fence.
