Bold Title

about 1/3 of the last page used bold titles, whats up with that guys :D!?

Animation

Origional point:
'american' cartoons nowadays are done very cheaply and they look it. there is no more textures nor a sence of realisum where the characters stand out from the background, and alot of the time the backgorund appears to be completely flat dispite being '3d', nothgin stands out to make it look proper.

the simpsons, family guy, futurama, new cartoons like that < 90s+> are flat , no texture at all and the characters have barly any form at all. its awfull :(

there's swf's here on ng that look better than these big cartoons!
back in the day of yogi bear, the budget was toiny compared to todays cartoons and look at what they did with it, they made cartoons that have detail, good animation and overall goodness. simpsons has a huge budget and look at the shite they make!

Well I guess the demand is to high for them to faff about with drawing each slide, when it's alot easier to be doing it how they are. Minimum input < - > maximum output.

Not really... More like 1/100 if you actually calculate the surface in cm2 of each page.

Hey all. I was trying to make something like Orb's sig, using a new animation technique I developed, and came up with this:
http://img59.imageshack.us/my.php?image=water distortxt9.swf&width=480

I'm honored :D

Though you know, it's a lot easier to do using refractions in 3D :D

No more animated sigs. :(

RE: Bold Title

Didn't luis say he is removing it? I still think it is a good idea, but it shouldn't be obligatory.

Quick AS Related Question

I am working on a Media Player that can get songs from an online host, and then play/pause/etc them, but I'm having a problem with the pause function, since i can't get 'sound.position' to work, it just comes up with 0 :(.

var sound:Sound = new Sound();
sound.loadSound("http://www.qubesite.co.uk/tu torial/NG59342.mp3", false);
sound.start();
onEnterFrame=function(){trace(sound.position) ;}

It works fine if i replace 'loadSound' with 'attachSound' and use a linkage, so i'm not sure what is wrong/ how to solve it :(. Could anyone give me any tips or help? It'd be greatly appreciated :D.

Re: Bold Titles
We are currently keeping bold titles. If you forget yours, we won't ban you, but you should use a title as much as possible. Don't lie, you know it keeps the thread more organized. Phasing them out will happen as soon as we feel we can take the training wheels off this thread.

I don't know; something just made me laugh about the idea of 'taking the training wheels off' of a thread that's been here for nearly half a year with 8,000 odd posts :P

cartoons
i was thinking about it today. and ed edd and eddy came to mind. easily one of my favorites. and i realised that both eastern and western cartoons have shows with amazing animation and shows with horrible animation. the onjly difference is the style and design.

Some people are slow learners. We had to put elbow and knee pads on this thread in December which was unfortunate, but maybe sooner or later we'll have a happy thread once again. Sometimes it gets better or worse, but I am optimistic. We just hit way too many speed bumps with derailed activity in the thread, once we get past those, we'll be peachy keen.

you can take off the training wheels. the thread wont fall if you make it think your hand is on the back part.

Yeah, but it's much more comfortable in that way

I hate having to discuss the little things like this, 'how should we make this place better?' 'bold titles - good or bad?' etc. Everyone has an opinion on anything.

Bold titles

The bad thing from my point of view about bold titles is that conversation doesn't flow (in the sense of how it would in real life, than say a chat room) well, it's sort of like stuff regarding </END OF SUBJECT>. What even adds to it is people talking about multiple things in one post, as then people are just taking intrest in the last subject.

So stop talking about bold titles, talk about flash.

Shape Tweens

How many of you can say that you use shape tweens alot in your projects!?

I Rarely use them, mainly due to their unreliablity when you want them to do something perfectly, even shapehints meses up sometimes!

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-01-17 15:28:42

RE: Shape Tweens
I have never-ever used them. I tried once, screwed up and thought: "Aww, hell. I'll be better off with FBF anyway." Not a single shape tween since then.

I don't think I've ever used them for a project, except for like practice and so on, but not for anything serious. I just don't find it useful very often, and if there's a part in which it might be, I use FBF instead cause it's much more reliable.

Doors. You'll know when they're appropriate.

Shape Tweens

I really only use them for color changes anymore. When shape is involved, it always kills itself. But fade ins/fade outs work fine with shape tweens. Back in the day when I was a nooblet, I thought they looked kewl and I used them everywhere, but now I realize they're just ugly :(

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-01-17 15:38:19

shape tweens

they are good for full screen fadeouts inbetween scenes :)

i also use them when changing colours fomr 1 to antoehr , but like.. off the screen for reference ;)

think only time i've used a shapetween and it worked correctly was 1 small scene in Sasquatch where i had 3 tweens making a 3d house < look at profile to see the movie ;)>

hopefully flash 9 will have more stable shape tweens :p

lol, you have a way with stretching metaphors to breaking point, and even morphing them into totally different ones several times in a sentance :P

I think the main problem is, regs are just being regs. It's hard to stop them from randomly spamming on the spur of the moment when there's a relaxed atmosphere, and while the titles in themselves don't do much they inflict an element of order on things which encourages people to think before they post. So, it's going to take a lot more order before we can take the training wheels off of the train or car or whatever, IMO

RE: Animation

As far as I'm reading the topic, people seem to be comparing the best American animation with the worst Japanese, or vise versa. Can't you appreciate that your net ownage is about the same?

Also, on the subject of Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, that's easilly one of my favourite cartoons. I used to watch it like non-stop when I was about ten, and from episodes I've caught since I've gotten older I can really appreciate the sound, organic animation, themes and all round weirdness of it. It's a great cartoon.

English Lit?

Anyone else here taking Lit as an AS level? There was like one other person in my class who did the question I did on the paper (quite a big class) :P

I swear he's doing things in tweens that people haven't even tried yet, I'm trying to do that technique of his myself but I failed the first try for I only used one MC while he had several different MCs.
One thing I have done recently is I started to pay attention to the animation of games ever since I beat started playing WindWaker at my cousin's. The way they animate things are so simple but un-obvious, in WindWaker it pretty much uses the standard explosion in video games but made cartoony. I was playing the expansion pack to The Movies the other day and had a look at one of the stuntman training sets and the fire was just a bunch of orange strokes with some filters on them and they tweened up a pole then they shrunk and where replaced by some puffs of smoke. I haven't paid much attention to BattleField 2 yet besides when you fire a gun and you have the flash come from it, just a few strokes with filters.
I might try and animate the fire like the did for the expansions pack to The Movies.

Quick AS Related Question

Please :(.

Shape Tweening

Shape tweening can look great, but it can also ruin stuff. For example, in the Winter Newgrounds loader, the shape tween from the loader bar to the play button looked great and really made it look more fluent. Whilst people that do it from text to a shape, it looks terrible, generally :D.

RE: Shape tweening

Something shape tweening is actually really awesome for is gradient effects. I've used them a lot for sun and lens-flare type effects in the past, and they're really not laggy in comparison to filters and whatever.

Yeah I know what you mean. Often when i'm watching something i'll be thinking about how. Same with films, thinking about what shot is that, how is the set layed out, how'd they do that (in some cases). Definetly adds an edge.

Yeah I do that. Sometimes it's really annoying. Sometimes it's interesting and useful. I was watching Dances with Wolves and there's a bit where this dude gets shot with arrows and I was thinking, "how the hell did they do that?". Then I read the trivia on imdb and it said they gave him a raised breastplate and actually shot him with arrows! I thought that was really cool.

Haha yeah. I watched two films that made me think today. First was Kes.. it's different being stoned & watching it, I was getting into it alot more than laughing at north England. And the second was Snakes on a fucken' plane. The opening shot got me thinking (if you've seen it).

It's a pretty long LS that tracks. I assume it's shot from a helicoptor or some kinda crane dolly. Anyway firstly I was thinking - how is this relevant. It wasn't so much, it introduced us to the character in the narrative.. but felt unnescesary.

I was thinking about how much fucking money they wasted on that shot :).

I didn't like snakes on a plane btw, i'd of much rather got out Rambo, Judge Dredd.. or some shitty old Jackie Chan film. Wanted some action dammit.
