My knowledge of programming stopped at Tell target.
Once they took away my ability to tell things what to do i was no longer interested.

I think most of the "new gen" NG Flash forum guys won't know what you're on about there ;)

Anyway, I've been trying to rethink how the P-bot daily picks module would display on phone.

You can find a prototype of it here

Its a barebones carousel type of thingie, so nothing mind-blowing.

Anyway here's a more polished design of it below.

My question is, does that feel like too great of a departure from how you are used to seeing it?

One of the main reasons for the change is that at tablet label on a responsive layout, it breaks the grid having an uneven number of entries (5) along a row. Nowhere else does the site have uneven slots so it's kind of annoying and I had to think of a new way of re-envisioning the module, BUT it might be a fun departure considering there is no other module like the Daily Picks one, and perhaps it warrants a different approach to it to spice it up?

Programming can get pretty boring sometimes, so I would hate to not have music. In fact all my programmin' friends feel the same way. Music rules.

I was gonna disregard your response, but then I found the full image.

Plus it has all the songs that aren't on pandora that I want.

I don't while coding, it gets a bit distracting.

I wind up in this kind of "zone" where I could block out a train running through the room; then I come out of it when I feel hungry or I need to pee. Usually lasts 2-5 hours, though taking 16-20 hours isn't uncommon.
Music just kinda helps block out even more stuff and get me into that zone a little faster.

Who streams while they code, by the way?
I can never do it, I feel like I constantly need to be as entertaining as possible and I completely lose focus on what i'm working on. Nothing ever gets done :(

Your archnemesis, Mintpaw.

The entertainment value of my stream would be people reading my variable and class names after I get far into a project and begin losing sanity.

Though funny, I'm not sure that would be classified as "entertainment" to most gamers xD

I type with six fingers and my thumbs.

Thumbs for the spacebar, ring fingers for the shift keys, and first and second fingers for everything else (left hand tends to stay on the left side of the keyboard and right hand stays on the right) - occasionally i'll switch it up some, but that's the general idea.

Eggy so you're from NG! That's basically how I've been typing all my life! My father always told me to use the conventional WASD + JIKL hand layout when I was a kid but it was too hard for my small hands so I've been typing like you for my entire computing life :/

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2013-12-13 05:11:59

I've hated that "home row" bullshit my entire life, especially when teachers tried to make me use it in high-school. I type using every finger on my left hand, though very seldom use my pinky, and typically just the index finger on my right. I'm able to type 100WPM so I must be doing something right. :)

It's pretty hard for me to describe just how I type. I kinda roll my fingers to allow me to type faster, if that makes any sense. I don't have any fingers dedicated to any keys since it changes depending on the position of my hands. It's goofy and really only works because I have the layout of a QWERTY keyboard memorised. I've heard Colemak is supposed to be more efficient, but I turn into a finger-pecking dunce on that thing, so I don't like it. Give me QWERTY or give me death.

I more often than not use my left thumb for spacebar, though. It just feels right. :)

I've never though about how I type. But you got me analyzing that. This is what I've learned.
I never use the following fingers:
1) Thumb on the right hand.
2) Pinky on the right hand.

The following fingers have only one use:
1) Thumb on the left hand - space.
2) Pinky on the left hand - shift.

I memorize how to type each word separately, but I quickly learn how to type new words. If the word contains 3 keys that go in a row on the same line, then I press those keys with one hand using index, middle and ring fingers.
My keyboard's keys are not flat. They actually need to be pressed, with a distinguishable force, and they produce clunky sounds. These sounds are the only reason why I refused to use my new keyboard - I like to turn up loud classical music and then I compete with it by trying to type louder than it plays. Insane speed involved.
About typing text - I memorized QWERTY layout, but it seems I'm afraid to make errors when I type blindly, while looking away into the source text. So I take my time at first, and gradually speed up (to a great extent), then abruptly slow way down as soon as I meet a new very difficult or unusual word. When I make a mistake, I can feel it, so I then look at what I typed and correct myself. Nonetheless, blind typing does not change my typing technique in any way.

We had computer as a class from like 1st or 2nd grade on, and we were graded on wpm and home rows, so that's been etched into my mind. I do tend to roll my fingers though, and my hand is usually hovering over the home row rather than touching asdfjkl. Left thumb spacebar for sure. Just noticed that I hold my kl fingers over io since those are used more I guess. Pinky on ;

Home row syndrome probably affects my key bindings in dota as well. Starcraft 2 was a pain cuz I was always on asdf yet needed to move around the keyboard.

Just noticed openfl has accelerometer support (shoulda figured). That would actually make the game I was making in openfl possible for mobile if movement is controlled by the tilt of the device.

2 problems:

1) No clue how to deal with asset sizes and screen sizes.
2) Not even sure if the game will still be made at this point, artist is busy with school and work (sadly, that's the case for 3/6 games I could possibly be working on right now).

Half of me is going "it's really great that all these people are learning to program and we're getting a bit more recognition" and the other half is going "oh, you made a whole four lines of code! Congratu-fuckin-lations!" (I think that bit's just how they presented it, like the number of lines of code actually means something)

Screen size isn't too much of a pain. You can scale your main container to fit the screen completely (both in the X and Y), but if the aspect ratios are different, it'll distort. As a second option, you can pick the smallest scale factor between the X and Y and do both by that factor and then center the container on the screen. You'd be left with ugly black borders either on the top and bottom or left and right, so you could put some graphics over the top to fill the space.

I'm still unsure about assets, I haven't seen how shitty they can get if you resize them. I remember before when I used it back when it was NME with something that allowed me to grab assets from SWFs, it would do all resizing as vectors and then draw them as bitmaps which was quite handy, so nothing ever looked low quality.

It was a really hacky way to get assets though.

I think they took that out of openfl and made it a premium only feature that you have to pay for.
