Sureeeeee.
Did you have time to look at the game yet? I really need some kind of feedback or bug report.

It says the game doesn't exist right now and might come back later. It also says it's uj, but I didn't see it in the portal.

Damnit, I accidently published it and unblished it, I will have a new project file and reinvite you.

Make your textfields not selectable. And it would be nice if the inventory looped, like pressing q on the first item makes it go to the last one.

The crackling is kinda loud. There should be a "you lose" audio track.

I can walk well past the boundaries on this map. I come from below, and that portal works fine. But to the right and up, I can go on for a while (didn't hold it down for too long).

Anyone had a chance to check out the new Unity 2D stuff ? It looks pretty interesting.

Warning: Content below is mostly nonsense, read only if you have nothing better to do.

Still don't get this whole stage business, seems fine for a couple of things I can think of off the top of my head but I'm wondering how I would move my tile based platformer over, I guess I wouldn't? which feels weird, right now I have the level builder built into the game so I can pause and move stuff around, I'm wondering how I could keep that functionality and also use the stage to set up the levels, it seems like it would be too convoluted, I'd either have to forgo the stage and try my best to 1:1 recreate my game as is, which then seems kind of like a waste in a way (though don't get me wrong I see the benefits) OR I would have to forgo the in game editor and use the stage to build levels which I suppose isn't that bad. Hnnnng I start thinking about all this stuff and just end up forgetting about Unity altogether, which is a damn shame cause it feels like I'm missing out.
Is the flash export out btw?
Ugh that was a gross amount of wishy washy rambling.

the flash export works for the people who have purchased it, but it is no longer supported/available.
Using the stage is basically the same as the flash one but in a 3d space (if doing 2d, its just 3d but percieved on a 2d place but you can still move objects around in a 3d place (in editor and what not). i dont see why you couldnt just forgo the unity editor and import stuff from the library.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2013-09-22 12:05:50

Yeah the flash export is deprecated. They are trying to compete instead with their own plugin. In terms of the stage/editor, you can just create your prefabs in code which are kind of like MovieClips in the library.

My biggest gripe is being forced into uses code components. I've heard people say that you can just put code onto the camera as your entry point, and then your project can live in code from there on out. There are other things that bother me too such as the global/static nature of a lot of the methods which give you access to other prefabs, or their code components. It seems sloppy to me, but I am probably just not used to it.

I feel really stupid right now.

So I was browsing the love forums, looking at some old threads, and I kept seeing this guy who had the SAME avatar as mike! And I was all "What are the odds!" and I eventually read the username, which had "mike" in it, and I then went "Same avatar, AND same name!!! What the oooooodds!"

And then I facepalmed.

In other news, I was planning to take a year before college to focus on and finish Concerned Joe, buuuut in Egypt if you aren't in college by 18 you automatically get drafted to the military. I already applied to a local university here but I need to figure out how to not attend and not get expelled D:

Get an easy major then lol. I don't recommend it, but if you really don't want to college.

Also, there are ads...everywhere. Good to know my supporter upgrade dies on madness day.

College really isn't as valuable as it used to be, especially for people like us around here with who bring heaping portion of passion and experience to the table. I just started at a fairly highly-ranked university, and it's not really providing the challenge or the educational worth that I had hoped for. I ended up dropping a class to make more time for independent learning and programming work. I'm also getting involved with a sweet research project, which'll hopefully lead to cooler things in the future.

The only reason I'm putting up with my poorly taught and organized classes is because of the opportunities on campus--research, clubs, connections--if I left I don't know if I'd be able to make it without a piece of paper with a few signatures on it to let people know I'm competent.

I envy your situation, 4ur, you've got a solid project and a definite plan. You're self-motivated enough where you can take classes online and read textbooks to learn all you'll ever need to know, so I say do what you love to do and see where it takes you. Much respect, man.

On a related note, everyone should watch this.

Holy crap, i'm actually kinda glad it's more difficult to even enlist here.
Though, honestly, it seems like a waste of a high-school education. Who the hell gets out of high-school and goes "I wanna be riddled with bullets!"

In other news, i'mma promote Joe because why not? And because it's a fun game. That, too.

One last thing:
"His identity is unknown but one thing is for sure... He is a d*#k!"
Might I suggest a colon? With that font, the period of ellipsis looks remarkably like an underscore.

Research is annoying to find here, there's an outdated excel file floating around to find profs to email. They always require knowledge of some program I'd only ever learn by doing the research. I did find some research last semester, though. The lab itself was cool but my part in it was rather dull.

Trying to find an internship...not going very well. Some applications want references and some require you to fill out a previous job section, as if no one has ever not had a job. It's also lame that I can't really put any programming stuff on my résumé since that's not my major. It might be good for a story in an interview.

is NG hiring?

Why can't you? If you have some solid projects that are presentable/completed I see no reason not to include it if it's relevant to a job/project. Independent experience is experience nonetheless.

That's the thing: coding a game isn't relevant to my internship opportunities atm. Hopefully I can eventually find something that would use ME and CS. Maybe robotics, but that's not something they'd let an intern do. If I could combine ME and game-making somehow, that would be paradise.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2013-09-23 13:14:27

I think internships are a good way of getting your foot in. I did it 10 years ago and ended up sticking around at that company for 8 some years. I think with the job landscape right now, companies tend to be a little bit leery about hiring someone new full-time right away and would rather do either intern-to-hire or temp-to-hire. If you're new and have the flexibility for it, you dont have kids and other things that really depend on a steady flow of income, its a worthwhile investment.

I still stand by my statement of not going for any internships that arent willing to pay at all though.

Guys

I don't hate matlab anymore.

It really must have been a prof-related thing like mike suggested. I like this guy, and I'm beasting his tests. I liked my previous prof too, so it must have been the way he taught it rather than his own personality.

the prizes and rules for this basically make the whole thing a scam and totally not worth it at all just take a look at the rules and keep in mind a full copy of unity is about 1500$ which is fucking nothing when it comes to getting paid for months or even weeks of work

That's like what a month of work pays, not everyone has a Scrooge McDuck money pit at home.

its really not and if thats what you're charging for a months worth of work you're getting ripped off

got bored, wrote mod for table of elements. Wanted semi-accurate-kinda-ish-but-not-really temperatures because gas>liquid>solid.

So I've been using PHP, Python, and JavaScript a lot lately. Makes me wonder why people gave AS3 so much crap when these languages really deserve much more criticism.

Am I the only one that hates dynamic typing? It's abused by a lot of people and results in nearly unreadable code

Diki has given php the criticism that it deserves.

What do you mean by dynamic typing? Haxe does type inference or whatever it's called, but even then I like to specify the class (especially for code-completion reasons). If you mean var a is used as an int and then later it's a string, then yeah I hate that too.
