Goodbye AS2
About bloody time!

Maybe it won't crash now? *wishful thinking*
I haven't done too much with it recently, but it hasn't crashed on me since I reinstalled it on my newer comp, so maybe it's a RAM issue in addition to it being crappy.

This game I'm working on will most likely have sequels. I could easily replace assets and release the sequel a day or two after assuming the art is done. What do people look for in RPG sequels (besides a continuation in story)? Pokemon RBY to GSC added content and minor graphics improvements, but the menus and overall gameplay stayed the same. The mobile game Zenonia feels like the exact same game each iteration even though there is more content. Assassin's Creed keeps me interested, even though combat is just spamming X to get execution streaks or kicking the above average enemies till their guard breaks.

I read something about Flash crashing due to memory settings. I can't remember where I read it but the gist of it was that you can change a line in a configuration file to allot more ram to Flash and it fixes a fair number of crashes.

That's a tricky one. With games like Final Fantasy, you don't need to continue the story, you can just start a new one. That being said, don't release sequels soon after the original. Give the first game some time to spread, and hopefully go viral. That way you'll get more plays and potentially more money off the sequel. As well, you can gather user feedback and make changes to the game engine to make the game better fit what the user(s) expectations are.

FINALLY :D

6.5 years since AS3 came out? Time really does fly. I remember first poking around with it and getting so frustrated since I couldn't put code on buttons any more.

Farewell AS2.

MACROMEDIA FLASH 8 FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
y'know unless... I'm using Unity or something.

Hey I mentioned this in my last blog post, I started a new lil in-between project game a couple days ago. It's a kind of adventure game based on making decisions and pickin' sides. You play one full school year as a 15-16 year old girl, and you'll have to draw the line on whether or not you wanna smoke, how much you like to get drunk, if you wanna have sex and who with, and it's kind of inspired by the Walking Dead game in that every decision WILL put you under pressure and fuck you over either way.
There'll be parties and holidays n stuff (if you have any friends) to be a catalyst, but inbetween that it's just gonna be doing homework and blowing off one group of friends to meet up with another.

The idea came from me asking how would you make Bully but with girls? but it turns out I'm a sexist, a retard, and have probably never made a game before. So after trying to coax people into talking about game design for a couple pages I actually got really interested in the idea, scooped it up n ran off with it. So a lot of this game is about getting shit on by people you don't like, and accidentally realising you're a bully to someone else, which is in my experience how it happens in real life.

So here it is after a couple days! I'm really happy with my ability to generate 600 students in half a second. Right now they're all girls and don't have photos, and you just get a new friend and new statuses every day. No conflicts yet.
In brainstorming this I made a really really strange application that snatches the profile pic of a random facebook userID every couple seconds. It is weird and I feel weird for doing it. In this actual game I obviously would have to draw a fuck-tonne of tiny avatars that LOOK LIKE real photos or something.

...oh and right now it's called "Bitch". I came up with that name on the spot, not sure about it. It's good for a lot of reasons:
-It sets the tone that this game is not a fucking High School Musical dating sim, it has the capacity to be as harsh and sad and real as it needs to be.
-When you're 16, any girl you don't like is automatically "a bitch". Partly cos you just learned how to swear.
-Bitch is a slang term that denotes hierarchy, which is relevant to this game
-Bitch is a slang term as a verb: to bitch. To bitch about someone behind their back, bitchiness, to demean someone.
-CANIS CANEM EDIT! Bully was released in Europe as "Dog Eat Dog".
-Ed McMillen made a game called "CUNT" and he's a cool guy, sssoooooo

Reason's it's a bad name:
-I have to explain why it's a good name.

...So yeah if this project takes less than a month and I can put it on Newgrounds, I'll be VERY PLEASED WITH IT!

Oh and most of the status updates are copy-pasted from a 21-year-old male on my actual friends list.

Sounds interesting. I like how it is something quite different, and geez, that Facebook profile pic puller is somewhat scary (but not as scary as the source of your status updates :P )

I've been working on a little tool that I wanted to make for the Drawing Grounds, but never got around to it. It's a little NG Audio Player component that will simplify streaming audio portal music into games. This way I'll be able to just drag/drop this into any flash project, choose some IDs or let it play randomly, and it'll handle the rest.

People are so picky with music it seems, so I figure it's easier to let the user deal with it in the end :D

Also, Happy Holidays!

Well done! I was actually planning on making an NG music player and art viewer with the library(-ies) i'm currently writing. It'd be the first real use of them, at any rate.

I never liked the "random song" feature of any music player that didn't choose from what I liked (via a preconfigured playlist or a "smart selection" like last.fm) - I always wound up with Jazz. I dislike Jazz.

I normally don't like jazz, but the music in Cowboy Bebop is too good not to like.

It would be... Sadly the API has no such feature. The only way to get audio is via http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/download/AUDIO_ID, then pulling ID3 data, which several songs are missing for some reason.

It'd be great to be able to query for genres, authors, length etc. It could give a whole new use to the audio portal, creating a true link between games and audio :D

Don't load the information using ID3 tags, use XML to grab the data.

This is the final result of series of tests I did in the beginning of the year with spectrum visualizers, you can load any ID from newgrounds song and it will load the exactly name the song is being displayed in the audio portal, I used XML to grab the data, find out broken IDs is also made with XML.

Away3d is pretty awesome.

yupp, it's all away3d - i'm putting some useful functions for it into a library.
the stuff you see right there is BitmapSplitter.split(), makeSkybox, makeTerrain, and makeWater with a little positioning.

what do you think? :P

so I was trying to get an AIR application to run without the installer, and I figured it out. It's a bit hacky, but it works.

1. Download FilePacker - watch out for the installer, it's a bitch. You'll want to decline all the shovelware they throw at you.
2. Install the AIR applcation to whatever temporary directory you'd like
3. Point the packager at the folder containing the extracted files
4. Have fun!

little tip: Check the "progress bar" and "remove files after executable terminates" boxes

yes, i'm proud of myself :P

I have something that does this, however, I believe this causes Security exceptions if the game is hosted on another site.

So does grabbing the process of grabbing MP3 files. Newgrounds Radio is hosted on Dumping Grounds because NG hosts all submitted SWFs to uploads.ungrounded.net rather than the usual newgrounds.com domain. For about ten minutes right when I first submitted it, songs wouldn't load because of a security exception. I had to rush to make a loader frame to submit instead.

61 on a good laptop.

I want to play around with some other ideas I have, but I also definitely want to finish this game. Like I super definitely want to finish it. I feel like if I work on something else, I'll lose interest and put off working on this game; but it's getting tedious...

60/61, but that's not saying much. The Flash Player only uses one core, and I have a dual-core 3.1GHz (can be overclocked to about 3.7 safely)
meaning: 99% of flash games will run well on my computer. If they don't, something is horribly, horribly wrong.

Finish your project. To finish is the hardest part of doing anything. The beginning is the fun part, and having ideas is incredibly easy to do. I think finishing is what separates successful developers, from failures. Thats my opinion anyway, but I am guilty myself of starting many things that I never finished, as I'm sure we all are. You should try to avoid it of course.

It's not my project, so yeah I kinda have to finish anyway. I'm doing well as far as progress, but it's in that progress that I think of other cool ideas that I want to play around with. MAN, it's tough. I will finish. I'll write a blog post about it, and then gain the motivation to finish.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2013-01-01 15:29:06

It's been three months since I started in AS3, and I'm getting close to finishing and testing my own engine for hardcore shmups (no libraries used). For some reason the pace of development feels slow though =( But at least I'll be pretty far ahead when I start my CS degree.

At 12/23/12 09:41 PM, egg82 wrote: who's awesome? :D

Pretty good!

But I can't help but wonder if a primarily 3D Flash is a wasted exercise. I've only ever seen one that ran smoothly and could possibly be called a good game, but even that one I could criticize as an incredibly ghetto shooter.
